Cataclysm beginner tooltips option simplifies abilities for rookies

While most of these new tooltips have yet to be implemented, the few that have been provide a basic level of instruction aimed at new and younger players. For example, the tooltip for the druid tanking ability Growl normally reads, "Taunts the target to attack you, but has no effect if the target is already attacking you." With the beginner tooltips feature turned on, the tooltip suggests it be used to "protect friends with less health and armor than you."
Beginner tooltips frequently lack numbers and often suggest when you should use the ability; the tooltip for the holy priest ability Holy Fire tells you to "use (it) as an opener." Not sure how to DPS as a rogue? Have absolutely no idea how to play a shirtless holy paladin that was forced upon you by hundreds of faceless voters? These new tooltips will give you clues.
The beginner tooltips may also help address one of Blizzard's longer-standing problems -- convincing new players to stay with the game long enough to learn how to play it. As reported here back in February, only three in 10 trial accounts ever get past level 10.
We chose a few noteworthy beginner tooltips from a number of different classes and put them side by side with their Wrath-style versions for you in a gallery.

Of course, *with* the new changes, if the devs had some cahunas, they'd change the tooltip to read:
"The source of a paladin's overpowered, unmatched, widely coveted holy strength. Best used right before you use your Hearthstone in the middle of the opposing faction's capital, especially after you've alerted several players to your presence. No, really! Try it. Trust us. It'll be awesome."

I just really, really hope the new tooltip for Army of the Dead reads " Summons a large army of ghouls to assist you in battle. Use only for emergencies. Causes the tank to be very angry at you otherwise!"

I noticed something like this in the Warlock destruction tree last night. The tooltip for Conflag reads some thing like "best used when immolate is about to expire".

...which is a HECK of a lot more useful information than the technical details that most tooltips include.

Aspect of the hawks description at the bottom says aspect of the pack. since i read the description first i said "Use aspect of the pack at all times? so i can be kicked out of groups and be QQd at in bgs? what is blizz on?" than noticed it was aspect of the hawk

That would be the best programmer prank ever.
"Take of pack, idiot!"
"But my tooltip says..."
"TAKE IT OFF!"
"BUT THE TOOLTIP!"

I noticed the Aspect of the Fox icon! First time I've seen it! The last screenshot I saw, it was still the cheetah icon. Yay for new icon!

I'm all for this as an idea, but stuff like "causes the target to be very angry with you" sounds a bit... condescending?
I dunno.

It seems a little over-simplified unless you're looking at it from the perspective of someone with zero MMO experience and may or may not understand terminology like aggro or threat. This is actually how I explained the tanking role when I was trying to get my wife into the game.
"My job is to run in and keep everything pissed off at me so you don't get hurt. Your job is to smack them around while they're busy smacking me".
(cutaia) Sep 17th 2010 6:38PM
I *still* think of my job as a tank as pissing monsters off.
Helston Sep 17th 2010 11:03PM
As a protection warrior I've always thought it's my job to run in and yell at big, scary things to make them angry with me.
Dea ex Machina Sep 18th 2010 4:05AM
Well, that's what it literally means to taunt something, innit? Insult them with the intention of provoking them.
I always picture tanks standing in front of me going "YOU! YEAH, YOU! YO' MOMMA WEARS {Mail Combat Boots}!"

I am guessing that the wording on these tooltips is a work in progress. Besides being somewhat misleading - Aspect of the Hawks tooltip tells players to "use at all times" or Paladins to never use Exorcism in melee, there's a lot of weird grammar and phrasing.

Wish they had this when I started playing I was a COMPLETE newb
iceveiled Sep 17th 2010 5:28PM
Is it that hard to write ONE short, concise and descriptive summary of every spell in the game?
rambaral Sep 17th 2010 5:31PM
I was wondering where these came from. They popped up while I was playing in beta and I was wondering why nobody had reported them. I saw them two weeks ago, then the tooltips went back to normal. I figured they were toying with noobtips for low levels but I was worried that they were going to be that way for everyone.
They are pretty cool when you consider how you eventually learned to play your class, reading on a website.
Drakkenfyre Sep 17th 2010 5:34PM
By the point you get an Aspect that regens Focus (Fox) you won't need them anymore. You don't get it until level 83.
Drakkenfyre Sep 17th 2010 5:34PM
Oh, and the tooltip for Aspect of the Cheetah does indeed tell you when to use it. But it says afterwards return to Aspect of the Hawk as soon as possible.
jfofla Sep 17th 2010 5:37PM
Been playing since first day of release and I have never used the Tooltip anyway.
(cutaia) Sep 17th 2010 5:45PM
Alright. I've gotta ask. How does one play the game and literally never look at a tooltip to see what a spell does?
