It seems a little over-simplified unless you're looking at it from the perspective of someone with zero MMO experience and may or may not understand terminology like aggro or threat. This is actually how I explained the tanking role when I was trying to get my wife into the game.
"My job is to run in and keep everything pissed off at me so you don't get hurt. Your job is to smack them around while they're busy smacking me".

As a protection warrior I've always thought it's my job to run in and yell at big, scary things to make them angry with me.

Well, that's what it literally means to taunt something, innit? Insult them with the intention of provoking them.
I always picture tanks standing in front of me going "YOU! YEAH, YOU! YO' MOMMA WEARS {Mail Combat Boots}!"
