Guild chat coming to the Mobile Armory app

This allows access to guild chat, officer chat (presuming you had access to start with) and whispers. It appears the whispers will only be allowed to and from guild members, at the moment. There is also no news about being able to chat with your Real ID friends. If you don't have a device that the Mobile Armory runs on, Blizzard will soon be adding this feature to the normal armory as well.
The full announcement is behind the break.
We're pleased to announce a new feature being added to the Mobile Armory: Guild Chat!
Coming soon in an update to the Mobile Armory app available in the iTunes App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=321057000&mt=8) and Android Market, this new feature will allow all World of Warcraft Remote subscribers the ability to chat with their guildies right from their mobile device. Access to the guild chat feature is included for no extra charge in the €2.99 World of Warcraft Remote Auction House (http://eu.wowarmory.com/wow-remote.xml) premium monthly subscription. In addition, soon after the launch of the mobile version we're planning on adding the ability for premium subscribers to use Guild Chat through any browser on the Armory website.
Guild Chat will allow you to chat with your guildmates via Guild Chat, Officer Chat, and Whispers. Now you can stay connected with your guild or update them from anywhere if you're going to be late to a raid! Stay tuned for additional information about this service and the upcoming Mobile Armory Guild Chat beta test.

Gotta love their wording
"This comes at no additional charge for the people who are already paying additional charges"
All in all, a cool idea that I'm sure a lot of people will use, but it doesn't hold huge appeal to me. I'm happy chatting with guildies in-game and leave it at that.

I'm with you. Chatting with guild mates might be nice outside of the game now and then ... but then again, that's what Instant Messaging clients are for. Paying for that? No, thank you.

I feel the same. When I'm off the game, I'm off the game. I really don't want /tells from guild mates about guild drama or to grats them for dinging when I'm standing in line at the bank or something. ;p
But really, I like to keep WoW separate from the real world, inasmuch as I like to keep the real world separate from WoW. When I'm in the game, I like to get immersed in Azeroth and enjoy the escape from reality. And when it's time to rejoin reality, I like to be focused on my family and responsibilities, without WoW as a distraction.

Or worse, "Can you come tank/heal ICC for us?". Sure, let me drop what I'm doing, get in my car, drive home, and raid for 2-3 hours. I have no life anyway. If i'm online, then totally different story. I love my guildies, but when I'm away from the game, I'm not going to rush back and play due to someone else's problem. Sounds too much like a on-call job.

Now this might actually make that service worth getting. Long as they don't up the price on it.

I need to learn to read the actual blue posts instead of skimming as i asked the armory question when the reader posted this in the Que...

Where's my non-mobile version of this? Why am I not allowed to access guild chat at times when I don't feel like logging in but would like to be able to see who's online and maybe chat someone up without wasting time standing around Dalaran? >.

It's not anything official, but you can download android emulators and just have them on your computer.
Orkchop Sep 21st 2010 1:55PM
They say right in the post that this will be added to the normal Armory webpage, also.
Orkchop Sep 21st 2010 1:59PM
OK, to be fair, it's in the blue post and now in the wow insider post. They should probably update that so it's a little more clear.

So... When is wow going free-to-play again?
marcus Sep 21st 2010 2:00PM
when was it ever?
arusiasotto Sep 21st 2010 2:05PM
I assume when WoW is replaced by a completely new product and they sell the game and servers to some third rate Korean company.

my 2c it would depend a lot how is LotR and other "serious" f2p games are faring, if blizz keeps at the top by the huge margin they have with their current subscription mode i don't think it's gonna be any time soon.
then again if integretion with face book continues it could be that you get some levels and zones for free for face book users.
if that happens we might get player housing or at least a farm =x

Not enough people signed up the first time around, so they had to beef it up. It makes sense. Unfortunately, I still don't like the idea of an additional ongoing subscription - I'm already paying one.
If I could just pay once to buy the app, maybe $10 or $15, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But anything that requires a recurring charge (read, 'semi-permanent salary erosion') is always going to be less interesting to me for exactly that reason.

Man people get negative- They said from the beginning that the whole thing was a work in progress, they'd add new parts to it when they felt they were good enough and when they had the infastructure. If anything the fact that they're adding new things to it means that there are quite a few subscribers since they feel people are interested in that kind of thing enough to buy a simple AH app.
If anything I'm just glad they're trying to be innovative in getting their money instead of cooking up more sources of quick cash they can get kids to buy like most other MMOs do in microtransactions.

I'm not quite sure what this is going to accomplish. If you're sitting in Starbucks and you get an alert that Belflol sends you a message that he needs a healer for his alt icc10 run are you really going to put down you're latte and race home? As far as real ID goes you probably already have their phone numbers anyway. You could just call or text them. Am I missing the appeal here for this new app feature?
Brett Porter Sep 21st 2010 2:23PM
For me the appeal is not to be available at all times for guild runs. My guilds are social so for me it is being able to be in the gchat which is my favourite part of the game.
I said i would pay for this if it ever happened and im sure glad it did! Hopefully work wont block the website so i can chat more easily there too!

For Belflol? You bet I am. That guy's awesome!
erin Sep 21st 2010 3:45PM
Of course not. You'll take your latte with you.
