Guild chat coming to the Mobile Armory app

This allows access to guild chat, officer chat (presuming you had access to start with) and whispers. It appears the whispers will only be allowed to and from guild members, at the moment. There is also no news about being able to chat with your Real ID friends. If you don't have a device that the Mobile Armory runs on, Blizzard will soon be adding this feature to the normal armory as well.
The full announcement is behind the break.
WrocasWe're pleased to announce a new feature being added to the Mobile Armory: Guild Chat!
Coming soon in an update to the Mobile Armory app available in the iTunes App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=321057000&mt=8) and Android Market, this new feature will allow all World of Warcraft Remote subscribers the ability to chat with their guildies right from their mobile device. Access to the guild chat feature is included for no extra charge in the €2.99 World of Warcraft Remote Auction House (http://eu.wowarmory.com/wow-remote.xml) premium monthly subscription. In addition, soon after the launch of the mobile version we're planning on adding the ability for premium subscribers to use Guild Chat through any browser on the Armory website.
Guild Chat will allow you to chat with your guildmates via Guild Chat, Officer Chat, and Whispers. Now you can stay connected with your guild or update them from anywhere if you're going to be late to a raid! Stay tuned for additional information about this service and the upcoming Mobile Armory Guild Chat beta test.

where is the android mobile armory app?
Samutz Sep 21st 2010 1:59PM
Android Marketplace

I take that back. I misread. There isn't an Armory one afaik, but the AH one is on the marketplace.
Darkdust Sep 21st 2010 2:11PM
Hoping the same way you are. Mobile Armory for Android? That's the way I read it!
Joe Sep 21st 2010 2:16PM
Check out Droid Armory in the android marketplace.

Last I checked, the mobile armory was only available on the iPhone, not Android. The only apps I show available in the Android marketplace are the authenticator and the mobile auction house. Does this finally mean we'll get the armory too? That'd be nice.

I miss the armory iphone app. The android one is privately run and while very cool, lacks many of the features of the official iphone app.
I'm gonna stop before this starts to sound like "Blizz likes Horde(Alliance) better, Waaaaa!"

Hmmm, I know I'm probably overreacting but all of these extra features for extra cash just makes me a tad uneasy ... I understand that it's added on to the premium mobile package at no cost, but isn't this the sort of thing they should being handing out for free? I realize it takes time and money to develop this sort of application and that R&D time is costly.
Just makes me a smidge uneasy, that's all.

I don’t really get this line of thinking…
Your $14.99 gets you access to the game and all the content in it. Why is there any need for Blizzard to provide this crazy extra stuff also?
No matter how you slice it, something has to pay for the development and maintenance of these niche things. They could either make everyone pay for it by increasing the monthly price or by decreasing the resources dedicated to free content. They can also (as they have chosen to do) make only the people who see the value in such features foot the bill.
I think we’re much better off with the latter.

Just makes me a little uneasy ... my subscription payment is fine and dandy, but I'm also seeing macrotransactions* available for extra non-game-impacting benefit. I'm a little unsatisfied with where the business model is heading. And yes, I know none of the extras are "required" to keep playing the game. By no means am I calling down doom and gloom because of this, but it does worry me that they continue to provide extra features as macrotransactions instead of as perks to the general populace. I don't mind if they charge for stuff, but it almost seems that they are just looking for new things to charge us for (and yes, I know mobile gchat is free with the $2.99/mo mobile AH upgrade). No slippery slope, no chicken little, just a mild concern with where we may be in 2 years.
Well, not me. I'll be in The Old Republic, but you get my drift.
*macrotransactions instead of microtransactions because $3/mo and $25 for the game store mount are not what I would consider micro

Now I will be able to screw with my guild regardless of location! Thanks Blizz!

You people really can't take a joke, can you?
woshiernog Sep 21st 2010 2:13PM
I'm pretty sure someone said "Not enough people have the auction house app. What can we add to it to make more people pay more money per month?'
prenden2 Sep 21st 2010 5:04PM
This just in: Private company adopts a money-making strategy.

It will also be interesting to see how they handle availability notifications.
The game already does a guild chat notification to everyone when you log on, whether or not you like it. (Always thought this should be optional.) What about here?
Let's say you sign up for Remote Auction House with guild chat. The first time you decide to check your auctions really fast on your cell, is something going to pop up in guild chat in-game, telling everyone something like "Grovin has come online" or "Grovin has logged into Remote Auction House"? Are you going to have to say hi and explain you're just checking something at the armory and don't have time to talk?
How is this going to work for guild leaders and officers - if there is some type of drama during the day and someone wants to talk to you about it right then, is this just another opportunity we have to end up looking like assholes if we don't drop everything to solve somebody's problem?
What about the "last online" thing? If you check the RAH at lunch, does it refresh your "last online" time? If the spouse sees in the guild panel at 5pm that you were last logged in 2 hours ago, are they gonna think you downloaded WoW at work and are jeopardizing your job?
Lotta questions are going to need to be answered. Mobile devices are generally used for tasks that take minutes or seconds, not hours. If all guildies online are alerted and might want to talk to you when you don't really have time, some folks will find this a deterrent to adding the service, rather than an enticement to do so.
Chrisamcnicholas Sep 21st 2010 2:23PM
Dude, total downer.
Brett Porter Sep 21st 2010 2:27PM
Then those folks may not want the service. Problem solved!
Personally i'll use it for the social aspect and not as a leader.
Pam Sep 21st 2010 2:30PM
I'm thinking more along the lines of getting access to /2 ...
At least on our server, it would be awesome goodness wrapped in tangy, chewy caramel.
Matt Sep 21st 2010 3:05PM
Pretty sure you can turn off those guild member alert notifications in the options. You can sit here all day thinking up possible worst case scenarios, but it's a waste of energy, frankly. Wait until people begin using the feature and posting about its flaws and benefits--then waste your energy complaining.
Wulf Sep 21st 2010 3:45PM
You seriously need a lifestyle change or the stress is going to kill you.
I couldn't imagine what life would be if my wife was so concerned about my activites that she'd use my 'last online' as a barometer for my daily comings and goings...
Drama's easy enough to deal with, kick those involved and pick up some competent adults. Only children and those who haven't progressed past puberty in terms of emotional maturity create drama.
Easy enough answer, even if it doesn't have a custom login stating that you're out and about; "Hai guise! I've got the mobile chat thingy nao, so I may not actually be here when I'm here. Coo'? Coo'."
