Guild chat coming to the Mobile Armory app

This allows access to guild chat, officer chat (presuming you had access to start with) and whispers. It appears the whispers will only be allowed to and from guild members, at the moment. There is also no news about being able to chat with your Real ID friends. If you don't have a device that the Mobile Armory runs on, Blizzard will soon be adding this feature to the normal armory as well.
The full announcement is behind the break.
WrocasWe're pleased to announce a new feature being added to the Mobile Armory: Guild Chat!
Coming soon in an update to the Mobile Armory app available in the iTunes App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=321057000&mt=8) and Android Market, this new feature will allow all World of Warcraft Remote subscribers the ability to chat with their guildies right from their mobile device. Access to the guild chat feature is included for no extra charge in the €2.99 World of Warcraft Remote Auction House (http://eu.wowarmory.com/wow-remote.xml) premium monthly subscription. In addition, soon after the launch of the mobile version we're planning on adding the ability for premium subscribers to use Guild Chat through any browser on the Armory website.
Guild Chat will allow you to chat with your guildmates via Guild Chat, Officer Chat, and Whispers. Now you can stay connected with your guild or update them from anywhere if you're going to be late to a raid! Stay tuned for additional information about this service and the upcoming Mobile Armory Guild Chat beta test.

Wow, that's a pretty weird take on my statement, Matt.
First off, if it was decided that requesting more information so people can make a more informed decision must be characterized as "complaining" from this point forward, I definitely missed THAT memo. I could understand if I was saying "it does this, and it does that, and I don't like it," sure you could call THAT complaining. But when I'm asking "will it do this? will it do that? how is it going to work?" that's called questioning, and only someone with a dubious grasp of the language would consider it complaining.
Secondly, "wait until people begin using the feature" is an incredibly stupid response when my entire point is that there's a lot more that people will want to know about how it works BEFORE they subscribe. "Let them all subscribe FIRST, and maybe they'll have buyer's remorse, and maybe not" is just not a very intelligent approach to making any purchase decision.
Thirdly, "waste your energy"? Valid discussion of the merits of an available product or service is "wasted energy"? So you'd have us all just shut up and subscribe like good little consumers? I can't tell whether you're an Activision shareholder, or just a guy in a foul mood.

I'm having visions of some guy at work, giving a presentation, and some sort of guild drama goes down...

And god knows, none of us today have the power to resist immediately responding to a text, IM, or Facebook message. How will WoW players ever hold down a job, make love to our spouses, or feed our kids, when there is always this insidious threat of guild drama imposing itself upon our real lives via phone apps we can turn off or ignore? Oh right, we can turn it off or ignore it. Yeah.

I'm amazed how you can draw so much out of what I didn't say in the first place.
arixian Sep 21st 2010 2:32PM
maybe this is really obvious but I'm going to ask for my own idiot sake's point of clarification. When they say the following does that mean that the online Armory guild chat functionality will only work for people that are paying for the mobile app subscription?
"In addition, soon after the launch of the mobile version we're planning on adding the ability for premium subscribers to use Guild Chat through any browser on the Armory website. "

Correct. It's an additional, paid service (if you don't already have the MAH).
The original service is intended to be used as a mobile app, the browser-based version is just included as a convenience.

I'm definitely not turning this down. Excellent idea.
Karilyn Sep 21st 2010 2:35PM
I'm definitely not rejecting this idea. Very cool.

I mention this I a reply to another comment. The armory app for android is called Droid Armory and is available in the android marketpace.
I can't compare it to the iPhone app as I've never used the iPhone app, but I've been happy with it for the couple months that I've had it.
Galearon Sep 22nd 2010 12:56AM
Unfortunately that is a privately created app. It is not run or updated by blizzard so it lacks the functions of the IPhone App. It does however link to the Auction House App if it is installed. I am hoping that when Blizzard mentions the Android Armory App, this means that we will be getting one soon. While I do love the Droid Armory, I know its not the same as the Iphone App. CURSE YOU IPHONE! WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE YOU?!

No realID chat? Or chat with your friends list? No talking to your guildie friend that's online on his bank alt in a different guild? I can see not adding trade chat. But at least let us talk to our non-guildie friends.

I am kind of really hoping this means I can log into guild chat soon via Pidgin without a mobile app subscription, either with Blizz's blessing or user ingenuity.
Viper007Bond Sep 21st 2010 3:28PM
If this had push, that would be awesome. A guild member could PST me and it'd be like getting a text on my iPhone.

I love my guild. I love my guild mates. I love chatting with them in game, and we all know about each others families, jobs, how school is going, what have you.
That being said, no way will I get this. There are times I want to be able to log off the computer, and just relax, watch a movie, spend time with friends face to face, or just be left the heck alone. If I want a text from a guild mate, they already have my number.
For the people saying previously to just turn off the phone, some of us use our phones for things like business, or family being able to contact you in case of an emergency. So, instead of turning off the phone, I just will not subscribe to this service.

Kind of disappointing that blizzard all these cool features for iphone/Android Users, yet blackberry users are neglected, I have a blackberry through work and yet Im restricted to using the armory via the website, I have yet to see anything from a blizzard employee about a app for Blackberry's. My phone isnt even supported for the mobile Authenticator (Blackberry Bold 9700)
Wulf Sep 21st 2010 3:54PM
Don't be disappointed in Blizzard, direct your disdain at RIM.
The BBerries are business devices and are pointed squarely at that market. Their app support and implementation is abysmal at best, even with the 6.0 OS.
It's like trying to run S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on a business class machine. It'll do it, but it won't be pretty, because that's not it was designed for.
Malenx Sep 21st 2010 3:56PM
Blizzard simply thinks your phone is a waste of development resources. They won't make enough profit for the investment. Ugly truth, but it's the same reason why you won't find super high speed internet available in the middle of a Kansas cornfield.
