Reader UI of the Week: Scyian's UI
Each week, we bring you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs. Have a screenshot of your UI you want to submit? Send your screenshots, along with info on what mods you're using, to readerui@wow.com.
Welcome to another exciting edition of Reader UI of the Week, your one-stop shop for the WoW Insider community's personal user interfaces. This week, Scyian's UI promises some gasps and shocks, perhaps even a guffaw or two lined up. As you'll soon see, Scyian's user interface is a little bit different, but here at Reader UI of the Week, different is good. Let's check it out!
Lay it down for us, Scyian:
Thanks for the awesome submission, Scyian. I know the big focal point of the discussion here and in the comments is going to be the lack of action bars displayed, even during combat, so let's save that for last. Before we get to that, I have some pretty nice things to say about a user interface that goes against the "bottom bar" mentality that I do like to spotlight here.Greetings Mathew,
Thank you for considering this UI and for your coverage of "Addon Spotlight" and "Reader UI of the Week." Since I started following those columns, tinkering with addons has become a huge part of how I enjoy WoW. Few games have such a flexible interface and such a vast repository of existing addons to shop from.
While the UI I've settled on isn't as artistic as others that have been featured, it has a layout that works well for me and seems to be fairly unique. It is inspired by one of LED's recent compositions, though done with different addons and adjustments.
The two main goals are centralizing important elements and hiding everything that isn't crucial. As a melee DPS who's constantly in the muck and having to strafe, turn and run in order to stay on target, I don't want to look very far from the action to get the information I need. Thus my health, energy and rotation bars are in the center of the screen. Just to the left are my debuffs, incoming damage and boss timers. In the end, nearly all the "stuff" I need to track is contained in 4 square inches of space next to my character.
The downside of clustering things in the middle is that it takes space away from the actual environment. Hard to get out of the fire if you can't even see it! This problem is solved by making many elements smaller, click-through and semi-transparent.
Key Addons:
KGPanels: More than just pretty bars! Among other things, it will hide the minimap in combat unless I'm in a vehicle, a battleground, or mousing over the map for pinging.
Pitbull4: Health bars are transparent when full and colored when damaged. This allows the frames to be non-obtrusive when things are going well and to stand out when attention is needed.
Satrina Buff Frames: Couldn't live without 'em! Player debuffs are so easy for me to miss with the default placement.
NeedToKnow: Important player buffs and target debuffs are tracked with this addon below the player frame. Everything else is on mouseover.
OmniCC + CooldownButtons: Logarithmic cooldown bars like SexyCooldown look great, but the simple static icon is easier for me to track and more compact.
Other Addons:
Omen
Recount
DBM
MSBT
TipTac
Chatter
NibChatTabs
ButtonFacade
Bartender4
TidyPlates
Chinchilla Minimap
MikSrollingBattleText
DockingStation (LDB)
I know that hiding the action bar completely isn't for everyone. It works well enough on my main character since I've played with the same keybindings for nearly two years, but it is a liability when switching to an alt. Thus, I've added some scripts in KGPanels that will "sticky" an action bar if you click on its name (the grey words at the bottom of my screen). This is shown in the fourth screenshot I sent, along with the LDB pluggins and ArkInventory bags displayed.
Any comments or suggestions would be quite welcome. Thank you again for looking at this -- hope you find it interesting!
Scyian, Earthen Ring (US)
Note: Feel free to edit this email should you decide to feature the UI. I know I can be a bit wordy sometimes. :)
LED's tank UI
The bottom bar mentality versus free-floating
These days, the bottom bar mentality has come to be the default in most WoW user interfaces, mostly because of the traditional user interface setup of massively multiplayers. Star Wars Galaxies, rest her immortal soul, swapped the action bars to the top of the screen, whereas Dark Age of Camelot pulled an interesting vertical twist. Both interfaces were fairly well thought out and accessible, but the predominance of the bottom bar was steadfast into the new generation of MMOs.
Some games in the MMO sphere used the bottom bar mentality but added their own flairs. Warhammer Online, for instance, used a bottom bar set-up with different UI element for each character class. Blizzard transitioned over its expertise with bottom bar user interfaces (the StarCraft, Warcraft and the Diablo series all sport user interfaces that are focused on the bottom of the screen) and crafted the default WoW UI similarly for each class.
The bottom bar mentality is fixed in many people's minds, mine included, as being something of a space-saving template. It just feels right most of the time to have all of your UI elements happy and compacted to the bottom of the screen. But free-floating user interface elements offer something bottom bar interfaces don't most of the time -- a certain degree of freedom.
Scyian brings up an excellent point about free-floating UIS -- elements can get in your way, especially if you need to click through those elements to hit enemies, move or interact with the environment in any way. The simple way around this is that most mods (kgPanels and others notably) have toggles that allow for mouse clicks to either pass through those windows or interact with them. Careful manipulation of your addons can allow you to keep information-gathering addons like DPS/threat meters free-floating and allow mouse-clicks to pass through them. Only the information floats, which keeps you from having to peck around with your mouse pointer for an empty space.
Hiding it all
We have discussed previously how awesome minimalist, hide-everything Dalaran UIs are for the UI connoisseur, especially when admiring some of the awesome scenery the game has to offer. Recapping the tips real fast: Mouseover or hide in combat your action bars and other addons, scale addons to a smaller size, and make occasional-use bars easily accessible with Opie.
The double LDB bars aren't my style but work well enough for the setup Scyian is going for, especially with the list of windows. I would love it if he could post some of his kgPanels scripts, since it's a subject I have woefully failed to keep up on. This type of on-demand user interface is wonderfully conceived and illustrates how a careful understanding of the information you need around your character can transform into something like this.
Inaction bars
Hiding the action bars permanently has been both a goal and a curse of mine. On the one hand, I know my abilities and where they are located like the back of my hand. On the other hand, I love OmniCC as a cooldown tracker and think it suits my playstyle better -- not to mention, I'm adding new buttons all the time. Out of combat, it is a no-brainer to hide your action bars. Hiding them all the time takes nerves of steel.
Now, Scyian acknowledges that this set up isn't for everyone. It isn't. Actually, it's a tough sell. The reason that it deserves a highlight, however, is that one day, it would be wonderful to have a default user interface that almost looks and feels invisible. Scyian's UI aims to get there, in small steps.
Hiding your action bars is controversial, so I'm just going to ramble about it a little bit. I would imagine that enough keybindings would allow you to remove your action bars completely or potentially use a different type of key setup. A warrior I used to raid with had every ability keybound to a letter key, much like a real-time strategy game. He only kept his action bars around because this all took place years ago and, to be frank, we never really thought about getting rid of them. It seemed so novel ...
No bars is a gutsy move that I applaud. Take chances! Live dangerously! Come Cataclysm, though, you may want to turn those back on, as tons of new abilities will be hitting and new rotations forming. There might be a bit of a relearning curve to deal with.
Awesome UI, Scyian. Gorgeous.

Being a hybrid (Ret/Tank) I have never really put in any time into srsbzns addons because I feel that things will go out of whack when I switch specs. Have any 3rd party dev's created an addon for spec switching?
Furthermore, does anyone remember a ret paladin reader UI of the week?
Helston Sep 21st 2010 10:03AM
Many addons have options that allow for Dual-Specs. Off the very top of my head I can think of 2 I use for which it's rather important they have said option, RatingBuster (simplifies and explains stats) and Macaroon (action bar addon).
Eyhk Sep 21st 2010 10:21AM
WoW saves completely different action bars and keybinds for each spec, which means that many addons get this functionality by default. Unless you want a completely different looking UI for each spec, there is probably no need to worry.

Try ActionBarSaver (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/action-bar-saver.aspx)
I think it is broken when 4.0 comes but there seems to be a fix coming as well.

As a feral/resto druid and a holy/ret pally I haven't really seen any significent issues that dual specs cause- I use bartender for my bars and it works great- the default feels so awkward and frustrating to me now.
Aaron Sep 21st 2010 3:15PM
Even addons like healbot allow you to "copy spells" to your other spec. I like it because I can still use healbot to off heal in my dps roles and it will feel just like it does when I'm in full on heal mode. The rest of the comments answered the question for you. I use Bartender and it just rolls right over with the spec change.
I would like to point out though *IF YOU DUAL SPEC BEFORE 80* which I did on my boomkin/resto drood the spec you are NOT in when training will NOT update the rank. I think that's even the case with the default UI.
Say you have BigHealsRock (Rank 2) on both specs' bars and you just dinged 74. At 74 both specs learn BigHealsRock (Rank 3). Only the spec you are currently in will update the bar automatically. When you switch to the other spec you are still using the Rank 2 equivalent.

I have a ret paladin alt that I use with this UI - the only difference is that "CLC Ret" takes the space of the rotation bars, pushing the rotation bars down a bit. Bartender4 also lets you do spec-specific keybindings, though I generally keep my keybindings the same between characters.
I would be interested if there's an addon out there that will automatically change other addon's profiles for you when you switch specs. If I were to go heals on my paladin it'd be nice if the raid frames could automatically switch to the center and increase the size of the debuffs on my target of target.

As a healer, I am very jealous of dps ui's often times. I have over the years gotten to the point that almost every spell I cast is bound to my mouse however, so I have pretty much eliminated almost all of my action bars, which allows for my raid frames to dominate as a UI element. But it must be nice sometimes to not have to see that much clutter on your screen.

Healer UI's definitely suffer from Raid Frames overexposure. I used to swear by Grid/Clique, then Vuhdo, and currently I am using the TuKUI compilation (that includes grid). The smaller I can make information about 25 people appear, the more likely I am to notice that big black Defile under me.
I do think that Melee DPS UI's have somethings that are very useful for a healer: centralizing info in the smallest area possible. If I still had to look up to the top left of the screen every time I wanted to see the tanks health, well, things would be a lot worse.
I am hoping to revamp my UI again with a very minimal use of addons, and I probably will go back to Vuhdo. As a raid frame, Vuhdo does a great job of giving me information, I just need to work on getting it to take up less screen space. And of course I am very interested in seeing how Blizz implements their new Power Auras like UI elements. I swear that someday the military will start looking at UI's in WoW as a hint to how people absorb information, and addons like Vuhdo and PowerAuras probably do a better job than the fantastically expensive HUD's on the most expensive planes.

@freyal
It is very, very hard to make a UI that's optimal for healers as well as DPS + tank, mostly because of the raid frames. For healers, raid frames are the most important element, whereas for tanks and DPS the frames are best tucked off to the side so they don't distract.
I too used to believe that the clean and sparse healer UI was a myth, until a fellow guild member posted his layout. It's more minimalistic than mine!
Pyromelter Sep 21st 2010 3:29PM
If you're a healer, don't kill yourself if you can't get that "perfect" "minimalistic" UI. I've seen a lot of videos of top 10 guilds with their first boss kills, and many of the healer UI's look really busy. (Not going to say messy, because it's organized, but there is a lot going on.) If it's good enough to have world first raid bosses, I'm pretty sure it's good enough for everyone else if you don't have a perfect uncluttered UI.
Naryn Sep 21st 2010 10:13AM
@freyal
My dps and healing Ui's aren't that different, but on my Healing UI I just have a big grid raid frame stuck in the middle of my screen, yeah it does look a lot better on my mage than my priest, I also video some of our fights, and I will refuse to do it on my healer as you really can't see much bar the raid frames
jacksworth Sep 21st 2010 10:53AM
amazing
is this not available to dl as a package? i cant seem to find it anywhere. dont tell me i have to spend all tomorrow trying to create something similar :(
i main a rogue, and i've been telling myself recently that i should reduce everything, and get just my snd timer and cps right in the middle so i dont have to look around. i havent had the guts to remove my bars completely, as i use omniCC, and cant find a decent CD tracker to replace it (cant stand sexycooldown and the like).
Brisket Sep 21st 2010 11:22AM
I agree! I want a download pronto!
Scyan Sep 21st 2010 2:39PM
Thank you guys! Unfortunately I've got a lot of work to do before it becomes release-viable. The main issue is screen resolution. While most addons are anchored on the appropriate edge there are a few that do their own thing and not all of them allow you to change the anchor point without modifying the code. Fixing all that is the next step, but 'till then any change in resolution really messes things up.
Brisket Sep 21st 2010 4:21PM
Well in the mean time you could release a "this only works for specific resolutions" one and those who want to use it or try and fix it for their resolution can do so.
Scyan Sep 21st 2010 4:30PM
@jacksworth
I tried SexyCooldown as well, since I've seen others use it as a replacement for their action bars. While it looked great, it was difficult to pick out abilities when they were overlapping. Making the bar longer helped that problem, but it took more time to search and find things on it. Using CDB with the OmniCC spiral works best for me, and since I only really care about whats on cooldown, not off, there's no big reason to display the action bar.
Of course, when I'm on an alt do display the action bar, since I not all their keybindings are memorized.
enoch Sep 21st 2010 8:45PM
Add me to the list who would love this in a package "as is," even if i have to adjust placements due to resolution. I play a dk and i struggle with some of the same issues you addressed and conquered. I'm also only a casual player at this point and a day of ui molding just isn't in the cards for me, so inevitably i will just live with my current ui, flaws an all. So a great ui like that would be an amazing boon!
great ui. well done. I'm jealous and cant wait to get my hands on it.
nikapo Sep 22nd 2010 1:33AM
Same here - I would love to download this as is and then I will adjust for my screen ressie... I don't have the patience to re-customize my horribly cluttered UI ... especially for 3 dual-spec'd 80s which include a mage, holy/tank pally, and tank/dps DK...
Scyan Oct 3rd 2010 11:51PM
Thanks again for all the positive responses - it's very encouraging. This weekend I finally got some free time and figured out what I needed to do to get it uploaded to WowInterface:
