Addon Spotlight: Leveling your pre-Cataclysm alt
Addon Spotlight focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same. This week, level those alts quickly!
It's been a heavy past couple of days in Azeroth. First, we've got heroics on the beta. Second, the public test realms are lighting the world up pretty good. Third, the clock is ticking faster and faster down to Cataclysm, so time is running out for getting those pre-Cataclysm alt characters ready.
This week, Addon Spotlight focuses on a few of your old favorites -- addons to help you level up that pre-Cataclysm alt faster, hopefully ready in time for the big shakeup. From reputation trackers to quest helpers, these addons will make leveling a breeze. Let's roll!
XToLevel
Tracking experience can sometimes be a pain in the butt, especially if you just want some estimates on how much you need to do to push over into that next level. XToLevel comes to the rescue with some awesome features to help you guesstimate how close you are to gaining just one more level before you go to bed. I swear, just one more quest!
There are some pretty awesome features hiding in this little addon. The ability to see how many quests, kills and the estimated time to level are some of my favorites. All of the pertinent information is shown in a compact interface. The addon itself is LDB-compatible and allows players to configure XToLevel in a myriad of ways. The LDB components can create custom text output patterns for the addon, making the addon even more compact, living happily on your broker bar. For your convenience, instructions for working with the LDB text output is included in XToLevel's folder.
If you're the kind of person who loves having this type of exact information while you level, to plan out the exact number of kills, quests or dungeon runs needed to hit that elusive next level, XToLevel is definitely worth a look!

Questhelper and TourGuide
Two of my favorite quest helpers are the aptly named Questhelper and the often-touted TourGuide. We've discussed Questhelper in the comments before when dealing with Loremaster addons, but I figured it was worth a big mention when talking about leveling, period. Questhelper does a good job computing the best paths to complete your quests as well as provide valuable information on completing quests, finding objectives and removing most of the mystery from finding those elusive creatures you're required to kill. Fashioning the fastest path to completing quests is what makes or breaks leveling speed, as the routes with the least overlap make for a more conducive leveling experience, especially when on time constraints. If you haven't used Questhelper before, it is a competent quest helper addon that won't steer you wrong.
TourGuide, after being gone for awhile during its brief hiatus, is back with a vengeance. Everyone's favorite free guides program is back for download, and I can't recommend it enough. Tekkub's addon is simple to use and provides excellent quest tracking information in a nice, tight package. I recommend also using TomTom and LightHeaded in conjunction with TourGuide for the full effect, but leveling is a breeze when you pair up your drive to get to 80 as fast as possible with these quest helper addons.
As people already know, I'm big on the LibDataBroker system, and Tourguide does not disappoint, featuring an LDB data feed for use over the regular interface, if you are so inclined.

FactionFriend
This next Addon Spotlight recommendation comes from an email from reader Impen that I received a while back. I remembered reading about a great faction helper right here on WoW Insider, actually, so I stormed off into the archives. Lo and behold, I found it, way back in 2008. Here's the email:
FactionFriend has some pretty cool mechanics behind it. First, the addon will display your most recently earned faction, which is great for grinding out reputation where killing mobs is needed. Your totals will automatically appear. Second, the addon is configurable to display reputations based on the zone you are in. This was particularly helpful to keep reminding myself to kill more furbolgs for Timbermaw reputation. They really love me in that tunnel ...
Arguably the most important feature is the ability to mouse over the reputation bar and see what items can be turned in to gain points in that particular reputation. Astounding. Absolutely astounding. And it gets better. If you have items in your inventory that can contribute towards a particular reputation, the addon will give you a potential reputation gain on the bar itself, showing how much reputation you will gain once you turn those items in. You couldn't ask for more.

Take heed, little alt characters. Cataclysm is coming. Cataclysm is coming soon! You'd best be prepared for the coming storm of fury and fire. In the meantime, grab some of these addons and see the world one last time before it all changes and we never get to see it again.
Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. If you're new to mods, Addons 101 will walk you through the basics; see what other players are doing at Reader UI of the Week. If there's a mod you think Addon Spotlight should take a look at, email mat@wow.com.

Well, Impen, the wait is over. FactionFriend is an awesome reputation addon that I personally love. Plus, watching out for items that affect reputation gains while leveling is a great idea, especially in the Outland, where items that you pick up and otherwise would throw away could be used for the various reputations. Sadly, I speak from experience. After fighting ogre after ogre for Oshu'gun powder, I threw away the warbeads I did not need anymore since I was exalted with the Mag'har, completely forgetting that the Consortium in southern Nagrand would take it for reputation as well. There was much head-slapping, I promise.Dear Addon Sensei,
I am doing some of the old world reputations that I have missed in my travels before the Cataclysm comes to burn away the land. I am, however, coming across a problem. My bank is so filled with items for repeatable turn-ins that I cannot remember what item foes where. Do Savage Fronds go to the Sporeggar? No, but seems they should. Do Dark Iron Scraps go to Thorium? Seems right, but maybe not?
My request is this: is there an addon out there that will tell me, maybe in the tooltip, who wants a specific item for reputation gains? If you know of one, could you please reply soon? I am currently on a nice vacation from work and would like to get exalted with a few factions before I go back to the grind.
Your guidance and assistance is, as always, much appreciated and welcomed.
Your faithful addon-ite,
Impen

And it still spams everyone you've ever grouped with, with stupid stuff that is even useless if you have Carbonite.

Questhelper has been messing up for me lately; I'll be 100 feet away from a quest objective, but it insists sending me another thousand feet in another direction for a different quest and I've noticed similar things happening quite a few times. I usually just go where the green arrow says, I just wish it refreshed more often or something
stealingzen+wow Sep 23rd 2010 6:25PM
Why the hell would you want to pre-level an alt before Cata?! You really want to power through the same Barrens/Wetlands for the hundredth time right before they significantly change and improve the entire leveling experience?
This makes exactly zero sense to me. I've been wanting to make an alt for months now, but I don't want to slog through the same quests I've done so many times. I want to experience WoW again, from 1-60/70/80/85. I want to see how the world changes, the new quests and items while playing an alt. If you already have a max level character ready for Cata, why not wait an experience the entirety of Cata with your alt after it comes out?
PictoKong Sep 23rd 2010 6:49PM
You know, meybe a newcomer will find this useful, as for me, i am leveling a rogue for the sake of INSANITY!!!! (and yeah, only ravenhold to do!)
Dreyja Sep 23rd 2010 6:49PM
Some of us still enjoy it and are levelling farmers to help feed the Cata alts we already have plans for. :)
Yes, I like LEVELING. And I like levelling the SAME toon, essentially. I can go to new areas and explore with a mechanic I enjoy and understand.
There are a few out there. :) Masochistic maybe.
Noyou Sep 23rd 2010 6:54PM
I can see both sides of the argument. I guess it depends on how many toons you are making in Cata. Me personally, I am going with 2 new ones. So in that aspect if I wanted to level say a warrior (stuck on 29) or a priest (don't have one yet) I would have to wait for Cata to come out level 6 80's and 2 fresh toons (Worgen Druid-Dwarf Shaman) before hitting those two. So just from a time aspect I can see how it would make sense to knock one out before Cata.
Nipah Sep 23rd 2010 6:57PM
Well, not everyone has a max level on both sides (as an example), so maybe slogging through the Barrens would be a new experience for them, but they want to streamline it a bit using the various addons mentioned.
Personally, I've just finished leveling my Druid through Outlands/Northrend because well, Druids are damn fun at that level, and I didn't see the point in waiting (because those zones won't actually be changing).
I am not going to level my other alts though, for the exact reasons you mentioned... I've run through STV so many times that I actually look forward to going to Desolace instead.
Aloix Sep 23rd 2010 7:19PM
Yeah a couple months ago I didn't think I was going to do any pre-Cata leveling *really*, but..
1. finished my rogue for Ravenholdt (she was close, just got her to 60 a couple days ago. That's good enough for me).
2. I'm going to xfer servers sometime Soon™, and I'm making a new DK there for a Scribe/Potion Alch to replace the one I'm not bringing with.
3. Profession alts, ones @ 68 currently will need to be 75 in Cata to get the minimum maximum profession benefits. I've not started on these yet, mind.
Adoisin Sep 23rd 2010 11:14PM
I have a few horde toons. Right now I am leveling a alli toon. I want to see both sides of the world before it changes.
Toggle Sep 24th 2010 2:36AM
I agree with you, I've seen those areas enough, but a lot of people want to do it simply because they won't be able to, ever again, see it the way it is now after Cataclysm launches.
Personally, I've never been one to wax nostalgic about such things.
Iirdan Sep 23rd 2010 6:29PM
I, personally, highly recommend TourGuide over Quest Helper.
Quest Helper does not tell you the most efficient route to complete quests in a zone. It simple tells you a route to go to complete all of your quests. It does not account for the next quest in the series or even for new quests you can pick up, and this is a major flaw. TourGuide, on the other hand, is a hand-written guide for each zone. It is highly efficient and presents an excellent path to knock out all of the quests in a single zone.
Quest Helper and Carbonite both suffer from blindness - it only sees the quests you have. TourGuide will be far better in the long run and makes for much smarter questing.
Aloix Sep 23rd 2010 7:23PM
I like efficiency.
Would someone with dual monitors, who is used to using Jame's guide (and has a fair bit of the questing scheme memorized) find it worthwhile to try TourGuide, or just stick with 'what works'?
ackthbbft Sep 23rd 2010 6:31PM
I've been using wow-pro.com's questing/leveling addon. These are the people that brought us the famous "Jame's Leveling Guide".
The only problem I have with it are a few bad TomTom waypoints loaded into it, which point you far from where you are supposed to be, but that is not a bug in the addon, itself, but rather just a few bad coords loaded into the db.
Toliman Sep 23rd 2010 6:43PM
if you use tourguide or wowpro or zygor or dugi's guides, it can reduce your attention ot the next quest or the next dungeon, etc. but really, levelling your 2nd char to 80, is much like the 4th or the 5th, etc. LFD helps a lot.
Xtolevel is decent when you're in the mid 40-50s because quest/mob XP at that level is still tedious without dungeons. 50-60, is somewhat bearable as well, but it's all relative/exponential.
i'd also add bump & hurry up for dungeons, since it times each run and shows XP gained per run, etc. hurry up, can be quirky, as it shows your previous best time via DBM.
LFD timer, can also suffer from the same problem as hurry up, do you want to know how many hours you've waited for scarlet monastery as DPS ? yeah.
comix, because grinding in vanilla is excrutiating, adding bounce sounds while jumping & crit-proc 'expletives' is just enough to stave off the tedium, and you can switch off the more annoying options.
an alternative to faction friend is factionizer, as it puts all the rep info into a separate info panel, as well as show how rep items/runs, are left. it's not as pretty as FF though.
would also add cork for watching food/buffs on new characters, i sometimes forget to feed pets or glyph/repair when levelling, cork, remembers and reminds about these things.
finally,
vendorbait, which highlights the more expensive BoP quest item,
sell-o-matic sells white/grey items, like several other money/repair addons.
also grab an auto-repair addon.
Sicadastra Sep 23rd 2010 6:52PM
Factionizer is another amazing faction addon. Similar features for item turn ins and rep tracking, but also lists repeatable quests, dungeon runs, and other sources of rep. All with "how many more till..." tracking.
Amaxe Sep 24th 2010 10:42AM
Yes, this was always useful for me, and even when not grinding, I like how it changes the information in the reputation panel
FoxOfWar Sep 23rd 2010 7:01PM
Maybe it's because I'm a lore fan(atic) and read my quests always, no matter how many times I've done 'em, but I never saw the need for these, to "speed up leveling"... and yea, being Loremaster helps in that I've done pretty much every questline I might come across when leveling an alt, at least once.
That, or I just play too much tanks/healers and end up skipping a lot of questing because dungeons are more fun. *cough!*
But strictly speaking, I don't believe in these addons because I am annoyed at people who can't even bother to read quest texts. These guys are absolutely positively annoying when they for reason or another lose contact with their questhelper or similar...
Dragonrose Sep 23rd 2010 7:33PM
I use quest helper to help me out or wow-pro guides. I still read every quest that I come across. It's NOT mutually exclusive, you know? : )
FoxOfWar Sep 23rd 2010 8:05PM
Oh, I'm perfectly aware that it's not mutually exclusive. Just that in many cases, it seems to be so, for some reason ;)

Any news on faster leveling in Northrend with 4.0.1 patch? (Like we got before Wrath.)
