Something similar happens in real life with Airlines. They all sell the same product and all want your business. Travelers can use automated systems to scope out the best fare and they know it. They also know its next to impossible to make enough money to survive on the basic ticket price. They undercut each other hoping to make it up in other ways. Baggage fees, buying food and drinks, renting cars from their associates or just shipping cargo.
Point is, you may not be able to make a killing, but do you want to? As Basil pointed out in his columns you can use good old fashioned customer service. to up your profits. The airline sells you a spot on a plane, then sells you the ability to pick your seat, board earlier and then choose a meal that is something other than mystery meat on bread. You are supplying a guy with gems. Perhaps he needs some other mat really quick for an alt. You can supply those mats at a price that makes up for what you are losing on the primary mats.
Yeah, takes work, which is something most people don't want to do. They want to sell saronite at obscene prices like when the ore was first needed. Won't happen. Everything goes in cycles.
