Well Auction wars have done well for me as a buyer. With Brewfest, the "Tankards o' Terror" which were a solid upgrade for me (had been using Crimson Steel since 2008 and Pride since Jan 2009). I'd seen them floating in the 1500-2000 range.
Yesterday I scanned the AH and found 20-30 and the price was 190 gold each. My shaman now dual wields them.
It's less profitable on the selling end, but it has some benefits. One AH PvPer seems to continually bid on my Northern Spices. Sometimes someone who needs them more buys them out. If not, I get at least the bid price.
I'm a casual seller, and generally don't even craft anything for the AH. I stock up on Saronite ore I need (almost at the stockpile level for my engineer) and sell the rest. I'll never be gold capped of course, but I think I will be able to finance the expenses at the start of Cataclysm much better than I was able to do at the start of LK
