Spiritual Guidance: Preparing disc and holy priests, page 2

(31/5/0) discipline PvE spec This spec will let you practice using Smite, Evangelism and get some pretty angel wings in the process while skipping out on some mandatory Cataclysm talents. Sadly, we aren't high enough level to go deeper into the holy tree to get Surge of Light yet, but we've got plenty of new toys to play with for now.
(5/31/0) holy PvE spec Unlike discipline, where you can choose to shun some of the new healing mechanics, there isn't a lot of variation with holy because you basically have to pick up every single talent in the tree to get to the bottom. That's why you'll notice this recommended spec takes talents like Lightwell and Improved Power Word: Shield both of which you can swap about if you like. I do recommend getting some practice using the new Lightwell, since it's becoming increasingly important to group survival in beta. When you finish in the holy tree I recommend you put three points in Twin Disciplines, and you can use the last two to either buff up your Power Word: Shield, get 2/3 of Darkness or max out Test of Faith at the bottom of the holy tree. Again, because mana isn't a problem, I skipped Mental Agility.
"4.0.1 Wrathful Gladiator" disc PvP spec OK, so the name of this spec is a joke. I use it because most hardcore PvPers don't really take anything seriously about the game in the patch right before a new expansion. Regardless, it can be a lot of fun, and there are a ton of possible specs you can pick up and experiment with as a PvPer. Thus, the tree I've linked isn't really a recommendation so much as it is an example of one direction you can take. I honestly suggest finding something that works well for you, because I don't even think I'd use this spec given my current gear.
Still, if you want to build off this tree, it mixes up some defensive, offensive and healing talents. If you want to go a bit more defensive, then I recommend you grab more from Inner Sanctum by maybe dropping points in Borrowed Time or Reflective Shield, depending on what kind of healing style you want to use. Just take in mind that at level 80 only half of Inner Sanctum is usable, since we don't have Inner Will yet. Maybe you'll even want to move some points over to Darkness so you've got more haste on your shadow spells. Experiment! My guess for now is that you won't see much use of Strength of Soul just because there aren't many penalties for using fast spells like Flash Heal right now.
"A brave new world" holy PvP spec So you're going to be one of the pioneers into the new world of holy PvP, huh? All I have to say is good luck. I mean that sincerely. You'll want to do as much direct healing as you can, since that will stack up your Echo of Light HoT. This, along with talents like Blessed Resilience, tell me that holy's main PvP defense is being able to heal for more when you're being assaulted. Who knows if that will actually be viable, but I'd recommend the Heal stance in Chakra since it will let you refresh the duration of your Renew (which should be glyphed for 25 percent buffed win) and will gain some nice burst healing when you use Holy Word: Chastise and Revelations.
Since you'll be do a lot of single-target casting, you may want to scrape together a couple extra points out of the holy tree and dropping them into Darkness in the shadow tree. What you drop is real dependent on your strategy and your environment though.
Glyph recommendations
Since the new glyph system is getting launched in the next patch as well, I've decided to make my recommendations for what glyphs you'll want to use. I've listed more than you can possibly slot, so if you want to know which ones I think are best, I've ordered them from my most recommended to my least recommended. If it's not listed, I don't recommend it for anything other than specific cases.
Holy -- Prime Glyphs
- Guardian Spirit Even though the glyph is nerfed, it's still a really important cooldown for PvE and PvP.
- Prayer of Healing If you're raid healing with the Prayer of Healing Chakra stance, you'll need to cast Prayer of Healing a lot. This glyph will make it go a little further.
- Renew If you're tank healing as holy, you can refresh your Renew with Chakra and Heal. That makes this glyph really strong, since you'll constantly be refreshing it. If you're still trying to Renew spam, then it's up to you if you want this glyph or not. Obviously, with the Renew Chakra stance, you'll have less need for it.
- Lightwell More charges are particularly useful for Lightwell in beta, but for right now, this glyph is probably overkill.
- Flash Heal If you're inclined to cast Flash Heal, then by all means, grab this glyph. Just remember that come Cataclysm, using Flash Heal often will run you dry.
- Circle of Healing Your mandatory raid healer glyph, just the same as it ever was.
- Dispel Magic Because there simply isn't anything else.
- Holy Nova There isn't much else to get, so go ahead and grab this glyph for emergency filler heals.
- Mass Dispel If you PvP, you'll want this, but if you don't, you can save slotting this glyph for fights where you actually need to use Mass Dispel.
- Penance This glyph remains mandatory for discipline.
- Power Word: Shield No change to this glyph either, so go ahead and grab it.
- Power Word: Barrier (No tooltip: Increases the healing received while under the Barrier by 10%.) I'm not sure about this glyph being available with patch 4.0.1 either, but again, if it is, it will give your Power Word: Barrier a little buff.
- Flash Heal A disc tank healer will enjoy this glyph while we're still able to spam Flash Heal for a few more months. Just don't get used to it.
- Divine Accuracy This glyph is absolutely mandatory for using Evangelism and Archangel, but again, we'll have to wait and see if it can be crafted before Cataclysm.
- Holy Nova Holy Nova was nerfed in build 12984, but I suspect disc priests will still find a use for it, even with our new AoE shield.
- Mass Dispel Since there aren't many major glyphs for disc priests to choose from, you can go ahead and keep this one slotted all the time.
That's it for this week. I'll let you know if this all turns into rubble.

One talent you might want to consider is Darkness is the Shadow tree for the 2/4/6% haste or Veiled Shadows for the lowered Shadowfiend & fade cooldown.
I really like where priests stand with the post 31-point talents at the moment. There's always a couple talents I feel worthy of those few extra points, and it's a good thing that I want all of them but can't have them. My only problem is that there still seems to be a straight-forward "Get all the talents that don't talk about taking damage" mentality for your main 31 points. I guess there's only so much room with only 6 tiers, though.

i can't wait to jump in spamming smites n bubbles

Atonement was working properly last night on the PTR. I was able to stare down one of the Pustulent Horrors in Icecrown, stand in its hit box and only cast Smite (not even a PWS on myself) and keep myself topped off.

I'm sort of concerned about Divine Touch in a holy build.
Specifically, in a tank healing mode with chakra, you will be rolling your renew on your tank by refreshing its duration with Heal. This indicates that in bossfight situations, you won't actually be benefitting from your Divine Touch very much, since you only cast renew once, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't trigger on the renew refreshes from chakra heals.

I got on the PTR a few builds ago and played a bit with heals right there at the trainer. I just wanted to see what the new stuff felt like and get an idea for how things compared, at that point, to live. One of the things I noticed, and this may have changed by now (I've not seen any discussion on it) is that the mastery boost of adding a hot to your direct healing spells, was applied with renew. I assumed it was because of the initial application from Divine Touch. And it lasted for as long as renew was on the target.
Now while I will readily admit it could have been a glitch in the build, it might be that with Divine Touch, the initial burst markes Renew as a direct heal and this will go forward. In which case, more free heals which are a good thing.
Along this line of thinking, though. I've never really worried about it until now (and it's not the kind of thing you can test on yourself) but is Prayer of Mending considered a HoT or an AoE? I'm pretty sure it's not considered a direct heal, but what IS its classification in regards to all these assorted boosts?
Dawn Moore Sep 27th 2010 4:19PM
This is a good point, and one that will need to be examined at 85. At 80 I still think Divine Touch is still worth taking because I think some Renew spam play will be able to continue, due to mana costs being low. At 85, it may be the initial heal just isn't working for you. Hypothetically, where do you see yourself putting the extra points you wouldn't spend on Divine Touch to get further down the tree though? (this is one of those questions designed to make you think - there is no right answer.)
And Aris, Prayer of Mending behaves as a direct heal as far as the holy priest passive ability goes. Echo of Light will proc when the PoM heals the target and bounces to the next player. I went to test this just for you! =D

I agree that there's not a lot of places to put the points from divine touch. As I see it, lightwell is going to be required (imagine that), but there's a little wiggle room between divine touch, serendipity, body and soul, and spirit of redemption. Personally, I'm not a big fan of improved death, but I *am* a big fan of body and soul. Serendipity is one of those "wait-and-see" things. On the beta, I'm not getting a high enough proc rate from Surge of Light to feed serendipity just from procced flashes, so while I like the talent in theory (topping off a tank with flash-flash-gheal has some elegance) I'm worried about the overall mana cost in practice.
Baryanni Sep 26th 2010 7:12PM
I'm looking forward to the changes, with horrified fascination. I'm dreading when they do hit, but honestly looking forward to it at the same time, if only to get it over with and start re-learning all over again.
Masalar Sep 26th 2010 7:19PM
In Totalbiscuit's heroic videos, particularly the ones where the group is really struggling, the priest would sometimes kill him/herself to trigger Spirit of Redemption because mana is no longer a concern. Oom and alive seemed to be less preferable than "dead" but with 15 or whatever seconds of heal spam. Just saying there are more uses to it than just "Oh, I died, guess I'll try and make the best of it."
Possum Sep 26th 2010 7:31PM
Maybe they should rename it Maytr? I sure hope killing yourself doesn't become a tried and true tactic of the holy priest or I might have to switch to disc. ;)
Hanak Sep 26th 2010 7:42PM
I'm really not looking forward to "suicide priests" as the new healing strat. We'd end up nbr 2 on the repair-cost list.
besides, it looks bad :p
Eturyu Sep 26th 2010 11:44PM
I stopped playing Beta because i love my holy, and it seems like they're killing us.
all i've done in wrath is heal pretty much Sham/Pally/Druid/Priest all healers.....i like it...
i just really didn't enjoy what healing on the beta felt like, i just pray that what i saw a month ago is not indicative of what we'll see in Cata.
I know ......... numbers and tweaking , and builds etc..... still can't say i'm not worried
Possum Sep 27th 2010 3:13AM
I think actually if Holy priests started doing this en masse that Blizz would just nerf the talent. It's probably not something they want players doing.
Redielin Sep 26th 2010 7:32PM
I have a feeling, Masalar, that that is not their intended use for SoR and they would just nerf it if we ever started doing that regularly, like they did in season 5 when Priests would do that in arenas.
obarthelemy Sep 26th 2010 7:32PM
Thanks for a very informative writeup. What i really-really need right now is a calculator that spits out HP/S and HP/M given various gears and specs, for all our spells. I usually do it by hand, with single-target vs a-few-targets vs fully-used variants for group heals.
Aurilia Sep 26th 2010 8:03PM
I've been somewhat working on such as a personal project, focusing on the level 80 range (without Beta access, PTR is all I have to play with). Unfortunately PTR test healing results at level 80 have been inconsistent for various healing specs: Some talent and tree specialization abilities are reflected in the tooltips, others are not.
And from my discussions with a Restoration Shaman who has Beta access, Base Mana is increasing by a LOT leveling past 80.

Train of Thought looks like an extremely weak talent to me. Even if you are using your smite to heal as Disc, the cooldown on Penance is not long enough to invest 2 points into a talent that reduces it by 0.5 seconds - especially if Blizzard isn't lying about not having to cast every time the GDC is up in Cata.
The way I see it, if you were trying to cast Penance as soon as it was available, you would get two casts of smite in if that. So for two talent points you get 0.5 to 1 second off the cooldown on Penance. No thank you.
And how often are Disc priests casting Greater Heal?
I do appreciate having talents that I don't feel I need to take though.
Dawn Moore Sep 26th 2010 9:42PM
I was replying to your comment then realized I should include the reply in the article itself. So go check out the addendum to Train of Thought. Some follow ups to the addedum:
*You and Heal getting divorced isn't so easy. First, you live in a state that requires proof of fault. Second, you do love Heal (just not as much as Flash Heal) and you know it's always going to be able to take care of you and love you. You and Flash Heal were young lovers together in Wrath before it had to go to war (Blizzard devs). You couldn't move on; had some casual thing going on with Renew for a while that you knew was never going anywhere. Penance, your best friend, was worried about you. Finally Heal walked into your life and you were able to move past Flash Heal enough to start a life with Heal. Then one day Flash Heal returns, but he lost a leg in the war. It's the same love, the same guy, but regardless of how it makes you feel, you know you're going to do so much more to make it work to make it work, if it will at all.
*Those little useless bandages that only have a purpose every now and then? Holy Nova.
Anyway, you don't really see health bars go up in an instant anymore - you just control how fast they go down and get momentary feelings of satisfaction when you do get to see one person at full. There really is a lot of triage going around, as Blizz promised, and the healers who are still healing at the end of the first tier in Cata will be better healers than they were when they started. I'd argue those healers will think everything in Wrath was a joke.
Aurilia Sep 26th 2010 7:52PM
I do have Glyph of Power Word: Barrier on PTR as well; it appears that the Shadow Priest glyph Glyph of Shadow becomes this glyph.
I'm sure Shadow Priests will love having it.
Names Sep 26th 2010 7:58PM
Prime glyphs and majors seem to be backwards in the article.
