I had a friend who had moved cross country a few years back. Before wow we would IM or play cantasta online together. It wasn't long after I started playing that he started to play too. Playing a game like wow together was a more fulfilling way of keeping in touch than just chatting or playing a card game together. When we were in the same city we might have gone out for coffee or drinks, being long distance going out was going to kara or some other instance or raid. It felt a lot more like we were hanging out, than just chatting via IM.
