When I first saw this video from Wowcrendor, I was absolutely amazed that it didn't already exist. How could we not already have a guide from the Sensei of Sarcasm, the Dean of Droll, the Hierarch of How-to? Obviously, though, we had no Brewfest-related hilarity from Wowcrendor because he just made this video: How to Win at Brewfest.
Billy finally gets to go to Brewfest and sample his first round of Azerothian beer. It goes about as well for him as you'd imagine, including a quick loss to a mage who takes offense to his attitude. Check out the video and let me know what you think. I might roleplay this action tonight on my home server. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at machinima@wow.com.
I really dislike Wowcrendor and it annoys me that I see every one of his new videos on the front page when it is released, but I suppose I can't force my opinions on you too. Obviously a majority must disagree with me or they wouldn't be on display in the first place.
Why is this particular comment grayed out? This guy was perfectly respectful; I thought the purpose of a down rating was to gray out howling banshees who have no business speaking to other humans, not guys who disagree in a civil fashion...
No matter what you do someone somewhere isn't going to like it, thats fine.
Just don't read/watch his work and be done with it. Posting comments about how you're pissed off because someone else likes his work is stupid and just that, trying to force your opinion on others.
I've been at WoWinsider long enough to know "how it works..."
And you're telling me Elmouth you've never sat through a movie and then gone on about how you didn't like it to friends that did? Waste of space? The entire website is a blog; it's purpose is to share opinions. You're allowed to say you dislike something and not be chastised for it just as long as you don't expect others to follow, which he didn't.
And you know what? As a show of solidarity, I feel compelled to say I find WoWcrendo entertaining but I don't think he's quite worth the hype he gets. To give you something to judge my opinion off of? I enjoy ROFLbear.
YEAH, I SAID IT! ROFLBEAR! I don't care of it's done by "Professional machinima makers," it appeals to me. My opinion is that the silent actor style ROFLbear portrays gets lost on some people and causes them to label it as unfunny and furthermore, I think that people support WoWcrendo so strongly at least in part because of his mystique as "the little guy" of Machinima; that is to say someone who puts out entertaining movies despite a lack of tools and skills as finely honed as those with more time like Stone Falcon or the guys that do ROFLbear. Not to bash his writing as some of it is sincerely entertaining, but I find many of his deliveries fall flat. I guess you can say it's a focus on dialogue which is a gamble but some of it needs to be stronger if it's going to stand without a better physical presentation.
He did have a point. He epressed it clearly without trolling or flaming. According to your logic, people are entitled to their opinions so long as it's the right opinion.
Also, he's not trying to force his opinion on anyone. He stated it clearly if you'd bothered to read his whole post. If he'd gotten on trying to convince people to stop watching Wowcrendor's movies, then he'd be guilty.
Yeah.. it doesn't matter if you have a valid opinion that's expressed clearly and civilly. If the majority of people disagree it will get downrated. Not fair.. but that's how it is. After all, it's easier to keep downrating someone than to actually come up with a counter-opinion that isn't "you should die in a fire because I disagree with you."
You're not allowed to express an opinion unless it agrees with whatever has already been decreed as the "right" opinion.
Yeah, I downrank people when they're being hostile or otherwise abusive, or when they try to pass off misinformation as fact, but overall the ranking of posts is just used to promote some opinions and silence others. It's pretty sad.
Gee, can't _wait_ for the WoW forums to go to a ranking system too! No way _that_ can go bad!
As for Crendor, I find him to be amusing in general, but this one wasn't executed all that well IMO.
It really all depends on how you view the ranking system.
I see it as a like/dislike button. Yes, it is useful to gray out unsavory posts by people who really don't know how to be socially respectful. But it can also be used to gauge what the majority thinks of an opinion. It doesn't matter how respectfully you state your opinion, if the majority disagrees with it, then you will be down-ranked to obscurity.
Obviously the majority of Wow Insider readers enjoy Wowcrendor's work, as many posts stating their dislike of the movie have been down-ranked.
And I agree with Elmouth. Imnick simply stated he didn't like the movie. Maybe if he had posted some reasons for not like the movie, a discussion could have been started. By simply stating he didn't like the movie he's not really contributing anything to this blog and his comment is a waste of space. And yes, there are many other comments simply stating they like the movie, but since the majority agrees with them, they got up-voted. :)
Well if it helps I uprated it. I too have been downrated for disagreeing with the majority--while being perfectly polite--so I know how frustrating it can be. Probably most of us have.
@Elmouth--by the same logic, posting comments raving about a machinima you love and want other people to watch is also pointless and a waste of space.
People are allowed to have dissenting opinions. As long as they're not flaming or trolling I don't get why they're downrated so often.
So Honoke, you're actually supporting the idea that if the majority of people agree with an opinion, it should be promoted, but if the majority disagrees, that opinion should be censored?
That's a horrific perversion of the concept of freedom of expression. I'm also certain it's not what WoW Insider wants for its commenting system. But apparently you're comfortable with it, since you view yourself as typically part of that majority?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I do not care for people that simply state "BAD MOVIE" and at least give some reason why they felt it was bad. I understand not everyone will like my videos, but like you said, the majority of people do. I look at comments, ratings, etc, and my humor appears to be the most favored among comedy styles. To question why I get featured when my humor is among the favored seems illogical.
Someone else mentioned that they enjoyed ROFLBear, and find me just average, and that's alright with me. I personally do not enjoy ROFLBear, and watched a few episodes just to give it a chance, but it wasn't something I found funny. It shows how different people are, and you have to expect that when you get into video production, where thousands of people will view your material.
The only other thing I have to say is some individuals calling this "average" or "not my best work." I felt that my last video I made was average, hence why I didn't even submit it to Moviewatch. This video, however, I enjoyed. Not everything has to be "Laugh out Loud" funny, and I believe that makes the most enjoyed videos I've created even funnier. Brewfest didn't have much to work with, unlike Pugs or Cataclysm Beta, so it is a lot harder to come up with material for the event, but it's something that I love to do and will keep doing as long as I am able to.
No. No. No. No. No. No. Go away. No No. Go away. No.
He's able to point out the funny things about WoW's community in a good, slightly sarcastic way. There is nothing wrong with disliking something. But you're correct in assuming not everyone agrees with you. WoWCrendor is one of the few Machinima artists who can tell a story, instead of a song parody.
I feel like this was unfair to WoWcrendor and got out of hand. I hope you believe that even though you aren't my favorite I still find you to be a pretty class act. I can tell from your comment that you don't mind but I get that you were sort of caught in the crossfire from poor downrated OP here.
"How to Tell if Your Guild is Bad" has become a favorite of mine.
@ Ronin You're reading too much into what I said and overreacting. I do not agree with censorship and actually enjoy reading about why people think differently. The comment system does not censor anyone. I can still read grayed posts just fine. But a grayed post does let me know that it's an unpopular opinion. Hence the like/dislike perspective I explained in my post above.
@Imnick Yes, you do seem to have started quite the discussion. And I didn't mean to sound like a jerk in my post. You did post your opinion in a very civilized manor. I just like to understand the reasoning behind people's opinions.
@wowcrendor Your work always brings a smile to my face. I hope you continue making movies as long as possible.
He "really dislikes WoWcrendor" and it deeply "annoys" him to see them posted at all.
Also, it's the first post - I wonder if the guy who hates the video poster and his videos bothered to watch it before posting that he hates it. It's not constructive, and it's VERY likely not informed, either.
That's trolling or flaming, or both, take your pick. It deserves to be downranked. Find better posts to defend, people.
@ Kravos, yes I did watch the video thankyou. Hate is a very strong word and I would not personally have used it, the word I chose was dislike because the humour is simply not to my taste. I could indeed have listed several reasons why I do not like the comedy used by WoWCrendor, but what would be the point? He doesn't have to appeal to everyone and he doesn't. A large amount of people like his videos and I am sure he's happy enough about that. He's not going to change the style of his videos just for me, and I wouldn't ask him to.
All I was saying was that these videos seem to appear every other week on the front page and it would be nice if maybe they could just ask people to subscribe to his youtube channel, as I suppose most fans already will have, instead of posting every time a new video is released, however again I admitted that I am in the minority and I can understand why these are on the front page so often and thus it's not really a big problem.
The fact that my negative comment was the first post was unfortunate, I wasn't trying to make a bold statement by rushing in with a first post, but I hardly think that merits you outright insulting me and calling me a troll, hmm?
