The OverAchiever: Do them now!

Every Thursday, The Overachiever shows you how to work toward those sweet achievement points. This week, it's time to get a move on.
We've had some recent news concerning achievements in categories we've already covered, and my original intent this week was to play catch-up with that in addition to finishing off the new reputation, world event, and feat of strength achievements in Cataclysm. However, given equally recent news concerning achievements that are set to become feats (and may do so as early as patch 4.0.1), I thought it would be more sensible to cover the stuff that you'd want to do as soon as possible before it disappears.
I've cross-checked the list of known Cataclysm feats of strength against the feats already present in game, and as far as I know, this should be a comprehensive set of current Wrath of the Lich King achievements that will become inaccessible as of patch 4.0.1, patch 4.0.3, or Cataclysm's release (or at least, a comprehensive list as of the current beta and PTR builds).
I've written this list assuming the following:
- Although it hasn't been officially confirmed that all of these will disappear in patch 4.0.1 or 4.0.3 rather than the expansion itself, for the time being, I'm guessing it's one of the two patches you need to worry about.
- With the recent announcement of arena Season 8 ending on Oct. 12, 4.0.1 may hit in less than two weeks. Zarhym's post just made it clear that the season could end as early as the 12th, not that it definitely would, and there's still a lot of stuff to fix on the PTR and beta -- but every Tuesday from hereon is a potential patch day.
- Accepting Oct. 5 or 12 as possible patch dates, I've included an opinion on the feasibility of getting the following achievements done as quickly as possible.

1,000 Dungeon and Raid Emblems and 2,500 Dungeon and Raid Emblems As justice and valor points are replacing the badge system, you can kiss badge achievements goodbye.
- Doable before the patch? Depends on the character and how much time you've spent in 5-mans. If you're starting from scratch, you may not have the time to run the 200+ dungeons (assuming you're using the dungeon finder, awarding extra triumph badges) you'd need even for the 1,000 Dungeon and Raid Emblems achievement. A character that's been 80 for a while and run 5-mans regularly might be close.

- Doable before the patch? We've briefly touched on this in OverAchiever: Dungeon and raid titles. ToGC-10 is significantly more forgiving than its 25-man counterpart, but the achievement removes any true gear advantage you might have had versus the content. Additionally, unless your raiders happen to have a lot of tier 8/lesser tier 9 or comparable quality gear sitting around their banks, farming up the gear required can be time-consuming. if you're otherwise familiar with ToGC-10 and can handle the gear issue, you should be OK. If you're not familiar with ToGC-10 or 25, you are very likely to lose this achievement at some point to a wipe.
- Doable before the patch? If you're in Icecrown gear, you should be able to swing the 10-man achievements, although the period of time afforded for any practice you might need is quite low. I'm not sure about the 25-man version. A perfect ToGC-25 run is still a tall order, because Anub'arak's a nasty fight for anyone new.

- Doable before the patch? Yes, although you'll have limited time to try again if you do lose someone on an encounter. It goes without saying that you should probably not combine this achievement with a drake run on either 10- or 25-man; it's still easy to lose someone on achievements like Firefighter and One Light in the Darkness.
- Doable before the patch? Yes. You'll have to make a trip to Nat Pagle out in Dustwallow Marsh for some Mudskunk Lures, but this should be a quick achievement otherwise.
- Doable before the patch? Yes, as long as you've got a spare hour or two to run around punching mobs. My main is a feral/resto druid who is almost always in form and started off with something like 47 unarmed skill as a result; near as I recall it took her roughly two and a half hours to go from 47 to 250 skill. The last few points will take you a while. I parked myself in a little inlet below Crusaders' Pinnacle in Icecrown and just chain-pulled the undead mobs wandering the area one by one. A lot of Wowhead commenters recommend fighting Mistress Natalie Mar'alith in Silithus. She will heal herself regularly once low, and if you're a caster class or spec with little melee damage, you can fight her for a good long while before she'll finally croak.

- Doable before the patch? Yes, although it's touchy. A single mistake by one player can eighty-six the achievement for you, given Algalon's Big Bang ability. As with the other ToGC and Ulduar achievements that are becoming feats, it's not that the achievements are extraordinarily difficult if you're in ICC gear -- it's just that it's still easy to lose them if the raid is inexperienced or if someone's not paying attention, and we're running out of the extra time you'd need to get another try in.
- Doable before the patch? Yes, but I'd get a move on, particularly if you play a class that can't realistically solo the raid or if you're hitting ZG with other people who need rep. Fortunately, Zul'Gurub is on a three-day reset, and if you're really hard up for reputation, you can kill the trash, let them respawn and farm them all over again, killing the bosses only before the reset.
Master of Arms Same deal as with Did Somebody Order a Knuckle Sandwich? above, although melee classes (again, barring the feral druid) may already be sitting on this one or at least portions of it.
- Doable before the patch? Yes. If you don't have one or more of the weapons in question, you can visit weapon vendors around the world and buy white-quality versions. They don't do a lot of damage in relation to their green, blue or epic counterparts, but that's perfectly suited to your purpose anyway.
- Doable before the patch? Yes, assuming your character is at least 75 to get the last quest in either series. They're fun, give two nifty rewards and don't take a lot of time to do.
- Doable before the patch? Sorry, folks -- this one's entirely a function of RNG, as anyone who's tried to farm them can tell you. One of my buddies who desperately wanted the tiger farmed Thekal as many resets as she could manage for the better part of two years and never saw it; another hit ZG on a lark to farm up some rep and got it on the first try.

- Doable before the patch? Yes. Even PUGs should be able to manage these, as long as all the players involved are familiar with Naxxramas and nobody's computer is gasping its way through the raid. That said, if it's your first crack at Immortal, you'll be introduced to a miserable truth with which tier 7 raiders were intimately familiar: You can lose this achievement to the dumbest crap imaginable.
- Doable before the patch? Very much so. Technically, you only need to kill Hakkar to get the achievement, but the rest of the raid is well worth your time as a peek into the raiding past.

what about titles such as bane of the fallen king and light of dawn? are these goin away as well?
Allison Robert Sep 30th 2010 3:18PM
As of now, they're still in the game as regular achievements and not feats, though that's always subject to change.

The insane.
Spoiler: bloodsail are going to be dead. Can you get the title before doing that quest chain? And with zandalar gone one of the best ways to get another faction on that list's rep goes.
This one is one I am wondering about because I am already close enough on a few factions that I could dedicate a week or two and get this title, or at least the important ones to it

As someone currently working on The Insane, I would have to agree, you want to do it now rather than later. OTOH, as someone currently working on The Insane, I have to say that you may well be too late already, if you are not already close to exalted with Darkmoon Faire.
Just a FYI, you turn in >100 upper level darkmoon decks. That's >800 cards ... that match. The number of cards you have to make, that end up not matching? Well... perhaps the AH will help you make up the difference.
My own experience has been 30-40 minutes herbing per card made, northrend herbs and supplemental Eternal Life purchased. At high Honored, I've enough decks yet to make that, probably, "every card will count".

I personally prefer punching Rivendare in the face for an hour to level unarmed skill.
As an unarmed ret paladin in ICC gear he dies very, very slowly and you can always stop punching him for two minutes to get him back to full health.
Not to mention the fact that you get an extra chance to get his mount after you're done.

I've done this achievement on all my level 80 toons but I go no further than Dalaran to complete it. Just pop into the Violet Hold and hit the mobs that are running around. I just stand in the corner off to the side of the stairs and pull a mob to me and wail on it till its dead. You can also put it in heroic mode and do the same thing.

I liked punching domesticated felboars (http://cata.wowhead.com/npc=21195). Just pull one over to Oronok Torn-heart and you can fight them naked, since the friendly ork will heal you whenever you get low. Simply start punching one and go off to do something more interesting (watch TV, write a novel, observe grass growing etc.). You only need check in every 30 mins or so to start a new boar going.

I prefer to fly down underneath Dalaran and melee the trees down there. They heal up on their own and if you use the white weapons available from vendors, you don't do enough damage to take them out.
On that note, the white weapons from vendors not only produce lower damage than typical weapons, they also have the advantage of having very quick speeds. Stop by the vendor in Dalaran and you can pick up a stave with less than 2.0 swing speed... definitely speeds things up a lot!

@Nodonn
That's exactly how I've done Knuckle Sandwich and Master of Arms. Just ran Stratholme for a couple of hours. Got me a good start on Argent Champion as well. No mount though.
About that, I've heard that Argent Dawn rep might also be going away. Can anyone confirm or deny?
Andostre Sep 30th 2010 8:13PM
Dharmabhum (or anyone), where can you buy white weapons in Dalaran? I was searching for a white armor merchant (I needed a level 60+ chest piece) to skill up enchanting, and I couldn't find any white weapons for sale.

I always recommend leveling unarmed the way I did it: go beat on Grol the Destroyer in the Blasted Lands for a couple of hours. He's at 42, 12. Once I hit 80, one of the first things I did was level all my weapon skills (including unarmed) in his little room.
Why Grol? Because you can't kill him. Like, ever. He's one of the quest mobs for the Razelikh chain, and the only way to kill him is to use one of the special weapons you get from that chain. No weapon? Invincible mob. You can just charge right in there and punch him in his blubbery gut to your heart's content.
A few tips. First, he's got several other mobs in his room. Kill them first, obviously. They will respawn eventually, but they are no challenge for a level 80. Second, Grol has a knockback which can get annoying, so I'd stand with my back to the wall while you fight him.
Why Grol instead of one of the other two minions of the demon? Because he's nice and close to Stonard, that's why.
So, in summary: Blasted Lands + a couple hours + a good movie = the most painless route possible to two feats of strength. Enjoy.

@Andostre: The Dalaran weapon vendor is by the exit to the flight platform, opposite side from the mount vendors.
However, he only sells level 70+ white weapons with higher dps. For weapon skill leveling, I'd recommend getting the lowest level white weapons from a vendor in a capital city or lowbie quest hub instead.

We recently started beating on Anachronos out in Tanaris to get our alts' weapon skill up. With a tank, he doesn't hit very hard, and he never dies.
Pyromelter Sep 30th 2010 3:12PM
For Zul'gurub http://cata.wowhead.com/achievement=688 , it helps to kill all the bosses. Hakkar's health and damage abilities decrease with the bosses that you kill... which is how me* (a mage) and a ret pally "tank" took him down. (*I died about halfway through and the ret pally was able to solo him the rest of the way ^_^)
As for weapon skills, you can always just take off a lot of your gear if your AP is really high, and bang on some of the yellow creatures just under dalaran. Also, if you are doing random dungeons, you can probably work on some of those weapon skills there. It shouldn't take 2 and half hours if you're just smacking around the neutral mobs in crystalsong imo.
clundgren Sep 30th 2010 3:55PM
If you're a self-healing class, Hakkar is actually easier to solo. His big trick is mind control, at which point you are likely to kill your own ally. As a ret paladin I routinely solo him and between divine shield and incidental healing from divine storm and judgement, my health never drops below 90%.
Been farming Z-G for ages, and still no tiger...and my guildy gets one on his first visit, while not even looking for it. Sigh.

On my Lock i did the unarmed skill training afk.
I went to Nagrand, to those Maghar reputation ogres, a melee one.
Then went afk. Soul link + Fel armor self heal was enough to keep myself alive and my dmg was too low to kill the ogre. I was returning once in half an hour to refresh fel armor and to heal the pet a bit ^_^
good luck.
arramkohime Sep 30th 2010 4:17PM
Just wondering, but you wouldn't happen to be from Exodar (US)?
Scooter Sep 30th 2010 7:12PM
my favorite weapon skill farm spot where the proto-drake eggs in scholazar basin (however that's spelled). It's great because they are stationary targets. Just watch out for the 1 or 2 patrols that sometimes appear.
blizzardsprules Sep 30th 2010 3:16PM
You missed Herald of the Titans
Allison Robert Sep 30th 2010 3:22PM
It's not currently listed as a feat. While I'm sure it eventually will be, it doesn't show up on the list of feats in Cataclysm, and Blizzard hasn't mentioned it specifically, so I had to leave it out for the time being. A lot of these achievements/feats are VERY recent changes so I can only assume Blizzard hasn't yet gotten to everything.
