WoW Rookie: What is Cataclysm?

First things first. Cataclysm is the third expansion to World of Warcraft. The first two expansions were The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. So far, we've seen a new expansion about every two years. In between each expansion, we get tons of free content like new dungeons, raids and world events. But it's really the named expansions that rewrite the game's genre and endgame for the player base.
We don't know the release date of Cataclysm yet. However, it's safe to assume it's at least a month away as of the time of this writing. There will be several prologue events before the release, however, that will serve as the lore and story transition between Wrath and Cataclysm. There is a Collector's Edition of Cataclysm that includes some neat toys associated with it, so if you want that boxed set, you'd better pre-order now.
The story of Cataclysm involves the awakening of an ancient evil dragon named Deathwing. As this guy gets up and gets moving, he's going to unleash a sort of hell on Azeroth that will radically change the landscape of the planet. This gives the game's developers and designers a chance to go back to the old world and update all the zones. The most basic thing that will change in Cataclysm is that the level cap is being raised to 85. Additionally, two new races are being added to the game. The Horde will gain the goblin race, while the Alliance gets worgen. If the new level cap and new races don't appeal to you, extant races will also have new class choices made available.
If it's not clear, the idea is that we'll all have new reasons to do all the existing content again. As Deathwing destroys the existing land of Azeroth, every zone will undergo huge transformations. Therefore, Blizzard would like you to create a new character and level up all over again.
The talent trees have been completely overhauled. You will now choose your main talent tree at level 11. From that point forward, until you've spent a large number of points in your main tree, you will only be able to spend points in that main spec. Additionally, as soon as you choose your character's specialization, you will receive a group of iconic, character-defining abilities. While the details are quite exciting, they're a little too in-depth for us to get into in a Rookie post. Check out our class columns (linked from the Class dropdown menu at the far left of the main menu, just below the site logo) to get more details about the future of your classes' talents.
Of course, there will be new dungeons for everyone to explore. There will even be a new world PvP zone called Tol Barad. A new battleground called Battle for Gilneas is being introduced.Cataclysm will bring a handful of racial changes, as well, but those details are still a little vague. No huge changes have been announced about these basic dynamics. You will, however, have the opportunity again in Cataclysm to gain reputation awards, more or less like you did in Wrath.
Most of the existing non-cash currencies are changing. The new currencies are basically going to be "low tier" and "high tier," tailored to whether you gained the points from PvE or PvP. You'll acquire low-tier PvE points from dungeons and high-tier PvE points from raids, for example. You'll then be able to turn in these points for gear at the appropriate vendors. The precise list looks like this:
- justice points low-tier, easy-to-get PvE points that will buy gear (like Emblems of Triumph are now)
- valor points high-tier, harder-to-get PvE points that will buy gear (like Emblems of Frost are now)
- honor points low-tier, easy-to-get PvP points that will buy PvP gear (like normal honor points are now)
- conquest points high-tier, harder-to-get PvP points that will buy PvP gear (like arena points are now)
Guilds will be able to earn special rewards as groups in Cataclysm. One of the most highly anticipated versions of the rewards are guild mounts. Guild members will earn the rewards, in general, simply by playing the game; you get points for quests, PvP, raids and dungeons. Don't worry too much about these now, since more and more information will become available as Cataclysm gets closer.
Waiting, itself, is really the most important to thing to remember about Cataclysm. The designers are still designing and the developers are still developing. We have hints at the release date, but we don't know for sure yet. Keep an eye on WoW Insider for more information.

Boubouille's post is that it's based on a date found in some text datamined from a build. The problem with that, of course, is that the date in the bit of text might change in a future build.
Okay, the build he has right now says Dec 14th for arena season 9 to start. But the build he get's next week might say Nov. 30 or Jan 11, or any other date.
I'm really surprised that Boubouille is posting this as fact and without a lot of caveats because he knows better than anyone that anything datamined from beta/ptr build is subject to change without notice.

Cata comes out next week. I've know put it on the internet, therefore it must be true....right?

I think it'd be hilarious if the Blizzard devs are sticking little things like this just to mess with the dataminers.
"Hey, guys, MMO Champion found the December 14th line! Time to push out a new build that changes the date to January!"
Hey, it's what I would do. Personally I'm waiting for the official announcement, and will give credit to MMO Champ for getting it right if it's Dec. 7. Still gonna wait for Blizzard to announce the date, though.

Communism was just a red herring....

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to play WoW without reading/viewing/etc anything about the game outside the game itself. I mean, you play WoW, but you don't read sites like this, don't read the official forums, nothing.
I think it would be a very different game.

Two friends to whom I've introduced WoW are like this. They never read/research anything about WoW outside the game. They just have no interest, unlike me. I spend hours every week reading about WoW out of game. They don't even know sites like WoW Insider exist. For God's sake, one of them didn't even know about the official forums until I mentioned it, and then he said he had never been even to the World of Warcraft community website.
I always thought that I was much more knowledgable about the game than these two -- and I am -- but ironically, not by much. I discovered that they are very social in the game and ask a lot of questions. To my surprise, they almost know as much about the game as I do.
I find that fascinating, actually. It always amazes me the varied ways different players experience this game.

"Therefore, Blizzard would like you to create a new character and level up all over again."
Is this a little misleading? It sounds like you could be saying Blizzard wants everyone to start new toons as their main. Instead of going from 80 to 85, Blizzards wants eveyone to go from 1 to 85 when the Cataclysm hits.
For any rookies who read it that way, Blizzard is redesigning the old world zones and is giving you the option of creating a new althernate character to level up all over again.

If you've never played Wow and are looking for a time to start, you can't get much better than with the release of Cataclysm. Everything is going to be re-freshed and you'll be on an even footing with everyone. Yeah, you might be a little poorer to start with but you'll be experiencing the new world together with everyone - which is what this great game is all about.

Yeah i've got 2 friends that i tried to get into wow, they gave up around level 30 and said they always felt they were ar away frm all the action since everyone was at level cap and there wasnt much life in the levelling zones. They're both coming back to the game for cataclysm since it basically offers a blank slate and a lot of life being breathed back in to the lower zones.

"free content"
hahahahahaha.
last i checked, blizzard is still accepting my monthly fee.
MikeLive Oct 1st 2010 11:40AM
There's a hidden cave in Storm Peaks with a communist boss that drops the Amulet of Free Ride.
Bigface Oct 1st 2010 12:56PM
Hah, I almost made a comment myself until I saw that someone beat me to it. When I read that line, I cringed for a moment. If I bought the game, paid monthly to play it and they didn't provide me with some new stuff, I'd probably have to actually take a break from the game. Heck, even now, with no new content, I'm thinking of taking a break. I don't feel like the current wrath stuff merits a monthly fee for me since it's so old, but I figure 4.0.1 will be hitting pretty soon so I'll have my excuse to continue playing. :P
dryankem Oct 1st 2010 11:35AM
Thanks, this is nice picture of the basic changes. I'm going to direct a couple of my friends to your article so they aren't floored with the new content. =)

With the talent tree changes, will you still be able to dual spec? If the dual spec is to continue will it still be available at level 40?
Samutz Oct 1st 2010 11:39AM
Yes, in the beta, dual spec is still available, and is now 100g (down from 1000g).
Boobah Oct 1st 2010 12:14PM
I believe dual-spec is still available at level 40; unless they've tightened the tuning drastically, you don't really need a second spec before then; hybrids can fulfill any of their roles just by swapping gear.
Watcher Hodir Oct 1st 2010 12:11PM
Cataclysm is confirmed to come in 7.12.10.
They said it will come one week before Arena Season 9,and they posted that Arena Season 9 will start in 14.12.10.
Boobah Oct 1st 2010 12:19PM
As mentioned earlier, all the blues have said is that Arena Season 9 begins a week after Cataclysm launch. And there's a bit datamined out of the newest beta/ptr build that claims Season 9 begins 14th December. Which hardly qualifies as an announcement of any sort, since an announcement involves explicitly telling people, whatever the bypass people think.

is only the old world being changed?
will outland and northrend stay exactly the same making it only a new leveling experience from 1-60?
Groth Oct 1st 2010 12:41PM
yup, outlands and northrend are remaining as they are currently.
