WoW Rookie: What is Cataclysm?

First things first. Cataclysm is the third expansion to World of Warcraft. The first two expansions were The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. So far, we've seen a new expansion about every two years. In between each expansion, we get tons of free content like new dungeons, raids and world events. But it's really the named expansions that rewrite the game's genre and endgame for the player base.
We don't know the release date of Cataclysm yet. However, it's safe to assume it's at least a month away as of the time of this writing. There will be several prologue events before the release, however, that will serve as the lore and story transition between Wrath and Cataclysm. There is a Collector's Edition of Cataclysm that includes some neat toys associated with it, so if you want that boxed set, you'd better pre-order now.
The story of Cataclysm involves the awakening of an ancient evil dragon named Deathwing. As this guy gets up and gets moving, he's going to unleash a sort of hell on Azeroth that will radically change the landscape of the planet. This gives the game's developers and designers a chance to go back to the old world and update all the zones. The most basic thing that will change in Cataclysm is that the level cap is being raised to 85. Additionally, two new races are being added to the game. The Horde will gain the goblin race, while the Alliance gets worgen. If the new level cap and new races don't appeal to you, extant races will also have new class choices made available.
If it's not clear, the idea is that we'll all have new reasons to do all the existing content again. As Deathwing destroys the existing land of Azeroth, every zone will undergo huge transformations. Therefore, Blizzard would like you to create a new character and level up all over again.
The talent trees have been completely overhauled. You will now choose your main talent tree at level 11. From that point forward, until you've spent a large number of points in your main tree, you will only be able to spend points in that main spec. Additionally, as soon as you choose your character's specialization, you will receive a group of iconic, character-defining abilities. While the details are quite exciting, they're a little too in-depth for us to get into in a Rookie post. Check out our class columns (linked from the Class dropdown menu at the far left of the main menu, just below the site logo) to get more details about the future of your classes' talents.
Of course, there will be new dungeons for everyone to explore. There will even be a new world PvP zone called Tol Barad. A new battleground called Battle for Gilneas is being introduced.Cataclysm will bring a handful of racial changes, as well, but those details are still a little vague. No huge changes have been announced about these basic dynamics. You will, however, have the opportunity again in Cataclysm to gain reputation awards, more or less like you did in Wrath.
Most of the existing non-cash currencies are changing. The new currencies are basically going to be "low tier" and "high tier," tailored to whether you gained the points from PvE or PvP. You'll acquire low-tier PvE points from dungeons and high-tier PvE points from raids, for example. You'll then be able to turn in these points for gear at the appropriate vendors. The precise list looks like this:
- justice points low-tier, easy-to-get PvE points that will buy gear (like Emblems of Triumph are now)
- valor points high-tier, harder-to-get PvE points that will buy gear (like Emblems of Frost are now)
- honor points low-tier, easy-to-get PvP points that will buy PvP gear (like normal honor points are now)
- conquest points high-tier, harder-to-get PvP points that will buy PvP gear (like arena points are now)
Guilds will be able to earn special rewards as groups in Cataclysm. One of the most highly anticipated versions of the rewards are guild mounts. Guild members will earn the rewards, in general, simply by playing the game; you get points for quests, PvP, raids and dungeons. Don't worry too much about these now, since more and more information will become available as Cataclysm gets closer.
Waiting, itself, is really the most important to thing to remember about Cataclysm. The designers are still designing and the developers are still developing. We have hints at the release date, but we don't know for sure yet. Keep an eye on WoW Insider for more information.

"we get tons of free content like new dungeons, raids and world events"
i dont know about you but im still paying my 15 dollars a month. not complaining about it, just pointing out this "free" content is anything but free

Perhaps you missed the distinction where "free content" means you will be getting something you were not already paying for.
The only way your statement makes sense is if you claim that you thought some portion of the game will become "free-to-play". Since nobody has ever said that, pointing at the $15/month subscription fee to claim the new content is not free is disingenuous.

Yes, but unless Blizzard *directly* gives a release date for the product, we should take every other statement with a grain of salt. At this point in time, 12-7-10, is a highly tentative date.

I haven’t played for a little over a year and I’m thinking of coming back. Will there be an graphics upgrades done with Cataclysm? It seems to be the one main area WoW is lacking in.

In a word mate, yes. Some parts (like water for example) are getting a massive overhaul, whereas the lands are being re-done to be - more awesome. Remember stepping into BC from vanilla? And into wrath from BC? The bar was continually raised. It's happening again with Wrath.
Rufio Oct 1st 2010 8:47PM
Sorry, I meant, it's happening again with Cataclysm.

I've been playing beta, and to me it does seem that everything looks shinier. I don't know if it's due to DirectX11 (if that works?!) or not..
But visibility is increasing a lot in the old world.. so you can see things as far away as you can in Outland and Northrend.. you know.. not filled with fog as it is now.
IMO the shades and lighting effects look a lot better and the new water / lava / fire / spell effects just look great too. Even good old basic campfire looks a lot better :)
PS. I also recently upgraded my PC so I can run WoW (and beta) with ultra settings. But beta still seems a lot nicer overall than live wow)

This question has probably been mentioned somewhere but i cant seem to find the answer anywhere online. Does one need to purchase cataclysm in order to gain access to the new class additions of old races, such as tauren paladin, or as long as they have the right expansion that has the race they have access to the new (old) classes?
carebear Oct 1st 2010 5:10PM
dont play word games with me. i expect there to be new content added between the 2 years that each expansion is released. thats why people keep paying their monthly subscription fees. its so we get new raids and new gear. not so servers can be maintained. people want and expect new content between xpacs.

Addressing one issue and questioning another:
"Free content" means exactly that; a patch and an expansion are basically the same thing, just on different scales. When you consider that an expansion costs extra $$ and content patches don't (aside from Blizz's monthly pwn-tax), then they are indeed free content.
I'm curious about the fate of those who haven't yet bought BC and/or WotLK; this is just curiousity, I have a few 80s idling, and will soon have more. However, that wasn't the case all along. I ran my main all the way to 70 and even got him artisan flying before I even bought wrath. I also understand there are those who still don't even have BC and just run around doing old raids. Now the point I'm making is I feel this luxurious pricing/licensing arrangement was possible because the old world was left relatively untouched by both those expansions. This one, of course, will be much different.
One thing seems certain, all players will have to buy Cat, there won't be an option anymore, unless of course it's free.......
Rufio Oct 1st 2010 8:48PM
No one has to buy it/ If you don't you won't have access to the new 80-85 zones, and your characters will be capped at 80, but you'll still be able to travel around the new-old world (i.e the 0-80 areas) just fine. Yeah, you won't be competitive at those levels and will be missing a whole bunch of new content etc so there's really no reason NOT to buy it, but you *could* stick with your older versions with no problems.
Hammerhand Oct 2nd 2010 11:00AM
That's just what I mean; with the other expansions' release, players who were paying their fee but didn't buy BC or WotLK could continue this under-the-radar WoW existence because they simply didn't experience any aspect of either expansion. That means no Northrend, no Outland, no JC, no Inscription, no Silvermoon or Exodar, and no Blood Elves or Draenei. They were basically playing Vanilla, except for the boats and airships that went to exotic places they couldn't visit, and the rumors in /2 of cool new stuff going on which they couldn't experience. Now they DID recieve all that free content we were talking about, I'm pretty sure they can use the random dungeon feature and they have recieved all the other content which has been released by Blizz except for the expansions. They recieved the free content, in other words, and not the content which cost $$. This time, the whole stinking thing is getting an overhaul. Will the aspects of this Cataclysm which only affect the geography be considered "free content"? If so will all these changes to Azeroth be released in a few major content patches BEFORE the expansion itself hits? How will old-world flight figure into this? People who still play un-expanded WoW can't fly at all.
