Around Azeroth Beta Edition: Modern warfare
Beta tester Noobieninja (is there any name that is more likely to get you kicked out of a group?) sent in this picture of Bilgewater Harbor in Azshara. Aside from the goblin-headed cannon with the detachable jaw, the most striking thing about this picture is the perfect reflection in the water. Those new Cataclysm water effects are going to make the coastlines a whole lot prettier.

Now I am starting to wonder if the goblins might be compensating for something..?

It has a range of several miles!!
Yeah, I see what you mean. :O

Invokes a little Final Fantasy VII if you ask me, Midgar anyone? Is that a Mako, er I mean Mana cannon? lol.
It may or may not be a nod to it, but either way, I like it.
I'm not in the Beta, but I am on the PTR where the new water effects are now implemented, very pretty.

I was just thinking the exact thing. It totally reminded me of the Mako Cannon. All they need now is a gigantic monster to stroll up and get it's head blown off by it.

Forget a Deathwing raid. This baby just blows his head off in patch 4.2.
Then in 4.3 we fight a headless Deathwing under water. The encounter starts by ramming one of the submarines from Vash'jir into him.

I was *soooo* thinking that. Mako Cannon FTW!

Indeed... that was my first thought as well.
I would assume that that is the reference Blizz was going for in this particular case...
Not that they really need reference for making a huge freaking cannon. Who needs a reason for that?

I am all for big guns to RP bird form on, but looking at this I see the color and building shape of gnome buildings. I know goblins have advanced their architectural style past the 'tropical fishing shack', yet stealing from the gnomes is stealing from someone who doesn't have much.

The effects are pretty, but like shadows, how much of an effect will it have on frame rate. Have to check it out on the PTR if it is now effective.
I'd rather have performance than good looks. All the AOE and mist effects on boss fights are impressive, but it is frustrating to have your frame rates go from around 60 to 15 just because you turned up particle density.

*checks*
Yes.
That's a goblin head.
Deathknighty Oct 3rd 2010 11:05AM
There's one stuck on the front of Gallywix's yacht too...might be a trend. :P

Clearly Goblins have a Spartan mentality,
Human soldier: "Sir, the Goblins aren't retreating, sir!"
Human commander: "Of course, not... they have a gun."
MusedMoose Oct 3rd 2010 1:18PM
But do they have a flag?
Artificial Oct 3rd 2010 4:54PM
Anyone familiar with goblins from Warcraft II knows they tend to be a little... extreme... in battle. "Have a gun"? Heck, even if the gun breaks, they'll continue gleefully attacking as long as they still have some gunpowder.

Im in 2 minds about the new water, in some places like Stormwind harbour and over the deep seas it look great, but in other places like the lost ilses, its looks too thick and gloopy, theres no splash or water shurned from large people swimming or even large boats its like thin blue paint rather than water. also it needs a tide, given the size of its moon(s).
Leonhart-Andorhal Oct 3rd 2010 1:09PM
Looks like Junon Harbor in Final Fantasy VII to me, pretty sweet!
Heather Oct 3rd 2010 1:25PM
This just reminds me of Junon in Final Fantasy 7
Parsley Oct 4th 2010 7:18AM
It may just be me who pictures the draenai blockading the goblin harbour , and players need to use this cannon to disable the enemy ships to allow small transports to slip through.
((this week I have mostly been watching The Empire Strikes Back .... ))
