Breakfast Topic: Let's talk about fun ways to die

Yes, when we hear the graveyard music, we often indulge in various expressions of nerd rage. However, there is no denying that there are some cool, funny and emblematic ways to die, both throughout the leveling process and in the endgame. Who has not gotten stomped by the Fel Reaver in Hellfire Peninsula? Were you ever pwned by Hogger? And what about all those times when your famous last words were, "I'm a _____
My characters have met their deaths in the elevator of the Undercity, been shot out of the sky near Alliance camps in Outland and steamrolled under various groups of mobs in Stranglethorn Vale. One of my favorite deaths occurred when my husband and I rolled Forsaken toons together. I rolled a warrior, he rolled a rogue, and we had fun roflpwning low-level mobs in our BoA gear. We found our way to Silverpine Forest, and I noticed that one of the nearby worgen had a different skin color than the others. Of course, being the compulsive silver-elite-killer that I am, I immediately targeted the mob, only to discover that it was a gold elite -- a level 20 Son of Arugal. I shouted and we ran, avoiding the mob the first time, only to have it pat up behind us and kill me a few minutes later. Darling hubby got away (stupid rogues -- always run when there's a fight).
One of my more shameful deaths occurred after playing chicken with the ground on my level 80 druid. The most exciting part of this game is wondering if there is enough lag at the moment that you click the flight form button that you'll end up dying anyway. I was flying over Dalaran and told my hubby, "Hey, watch this!" As he stood at the bank, I proceeded to fall through the air
Sure, we all die in raid wipes and in PvP -- but what about the neat ways to die in the game? What has been your favorite or most hilarious death in the World?

I did that on Youth once. Judged Martyrdom right after a decimate. Oops.

Grr...darn phone autocorrect. Gluth!

One of my favorites was with the old Seal of Blood for ret paladins with it's backlash damage. After killing Instructor Razuvious, I judged one of his adds who had the increased damage taken debuff for somewhere around 300K. The backlash one-shot me.

...that would probably be playing any *other* character than my main the druid and trying to use flight form. Usually about two seconds *after* I jump off somewhere high.
If I don't count raid wipes, my by far biggest killer (in solo play) is fall damage. By very far.
Other embarrassing cases have happened when I realized that when you solo old dungeons/raids, chain pulling the whole instance... mobs' stun-related abilities do not count for level. I've died a fair few times by pulling the whole instance, then when I try to aoe-tank the mobs down, I can't. Why? Because I'm in a permastun for having pulled a dozen of the mobs that stun you every ten seconds or so...
Anyone who has tried this type of instance farming in Maraudon or Zul'Gurub knows what I'm talking about.

Oh yes. Try it on a paladin, who actually has a cast-time for their heals.
Ugh.

Oh yes, Axe Throwers + stupid tiger cubs that pull the entire tiger wing = many an embarrassing solo wipes.

I'll never forget a particular Shattered Halls heroic run in BC... that annoying place with the gauntlet section and the timer to kill the last boss before he executed the prisoner... I was running with some guildies, and we were cutting it close on the timer, so we decided to sneak around the second-to-last boss to give us enough time to beat the clock. Everything was fine, the last boss was engaged, when part way through the fight, I turn and see the boss we skipped barreling down the corridor towards us. I start screaming on Vent and things go berserk for awhile. Needless to say, everyone died, but we all had a good laugh on the run back. :P

When patch 3.0 came out, and I saw there was a stat for Deaths by Hogger, I took my level 70 druid main, stripped off all his armor, pulled Hogger, turned my back on him and waited. It took him 7 minutes.

Many a time have I said 'Oop, this jump is bigger than I th...' or 'Oh damn..' as I missed a turn going up onto Freewind Post, or thought I could shortcut over a 'short' ledge. Its worst when you've enough time to actually -type out- 'Oh ****' in Guild Chat as you plummet and then die. Though it becomes hilarious when you've enough time to do that in Party Chat to the person riding in your chopper or on your mammoth. I know I've killed my girlfriends low level toons a few times taking jumps that I survived but she didn't when driving her around for holiday achievements!
I don't think someone is truly a Hunter until they've disengaged off of something high. Long wipefest on the LK, misplaced click, and voop, right off the platform... *sigh*.

"I don't think someone is truly a Hunter until they've disengaged off of something high." - Halls of Reflection, Escaping the Lich King event.
Yeah. You can do the math.

As someone who recently disengaged off of the netherwing plateau - I can say that falling off a planet is a lot higher (or lower) bar to reach. Also much more embarrassing.
Anathemys Oct 4th 2010 8:24AM
Deliberately diving into the well with my engie parachute (like a daredevil stunt)... And missing.
The second time, I aimed correctly. And accidentally pressed my nitro boots.
Most of my deaths are (on my DK) from falling and mis-timing the parachute. On my paladin, I almost never die (go figure). On my druid... Well let's just say I seem to have a thing for hitting the ground at mach two whilst desperately trying to hit the flight form button.

Tried to hearthstone back to Dalaran from the Skybreaker. Load screen, come back dead on the ground in Icecrown. Crap. Release, load screen. Standing with the spirit healer....in Westfall. I know warlocks are magical, but that was ridiculous.
Aaron Oct 4th 2010 8:55AM
I accepted a rez from a healer on the Skybreaker and fell to my death. 1 repair bill for the price of 2. lol
sandlwalters Oct 4th 2010 8:25AM
During brewfest I had used hops on my mount, forgetting about this I was at Wrymrest temple and took off on my dragon over the edge to fly into the instance (OS) only to have my flying mount turn into a ram just as I went over the edge, DOH. "rez plz"

A guildie and I, both around level 25, staged our own two-man raid on the Twilight Grove in Duskwood. On an unrelated note, Ysondre enjoyed two tasty appetizers that day.
About a year later, a guildie (from a different guild) and I, both nelf rogues, staged our own two-man raid on the Undercity. On an unrelated note, one of the elevator chambers had a couple of stains that needed scraping up.

Some of the most spectacular self-inflicted deaths I've ever seen happened back in BC. When Prince enfeebled the kara raid, my husband, a hunter, used a fel mana rune thingy that restores mana at the cost of health, woops.
My shadow priest friend was standing in Netherspite's beam that increases damage done, but also damage taken and forgot to leave Power Word: Death out of his rotation, woops.
The best ever though was sort of my fault. Some guildies were helping a friend attune to Ogri'la, and we were waiting for him near the giant gronn that sits guarding his treasure. My pally friend challenged me to a duel, and he probably would have won had I not feared him right into the waiting gonn.

Jumping off the Stonewrought Dam for screenshots is always fun, too.
Ata Oct 4th 2010 7:01PM
My first encounter with that dam was my girlfriend telling fairly new to the game me that we could jump off of it and be fine. We jumped, and died, right next to each other. Shallow enough that we didn't swim but deep enough that we floated. I've still got a screen shot of our bodies bobbing in unison....
But once you did that, the view out into the Wetlands from the top of the waterfall was amazing. Should get screenshots of that before the dam goes byebye.

After a long night of raiding in ICC, ending with Blood Queen Lana'thel, a few guildies and I decided to go do our Daily Heroic.
In that group was I, and one of the tanks. Right after he pulled, I inexplicably took massive damage and died.
Turns out Blood Mirror was linking me and the tank. Glitches are awesome, don't you agree?
