World of WarCrafts: The WoW-themed art of Semjaza

It's Monday and I'm feeling artsy -- today, World of WarCrafts staves off the Monday blues with a look at the colorful world of Warcraft fan art.
Artist Semjaza of the Fenris realm (US-H) has a marked talent for creating Warcraft and Warcraft-related artwork with an incredible amount of detail. Even more interesting is that most of this is accomplished without the typical pen, pencil or paper -- Semjaza's an artist of the digital age. Despite the computer-colored art, Semjaza still manages to pull off the kind of heavily-detailed and painterly work you'd expect to see on paper or canvas.
Check out more about Semjaza and his artwork after the break.
Obviously work of this caliber points at an artistic background. "I've been drawing since forever -- Mom says age 2," Semjaza says. "I went to art college (Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Mass.) for two years before I figured out 'fine art' wasn't what I liked to do. Being young and foolish, I quit rather than look towards illustration or digital art (which was still pretty new at the time -- this was around 1992; I'm 37). I recently went back to school and received my bachelor of science in game art and design." As for the tools used, Semjaza's work is primarily done with Photoshop and/or Corel on the digital side. "Sometimes I start with a scan from real-life pencil and paper," Semjaza explains. "I use a tablet -- a Wacom Bamboo, to be exact."
What kind of artwork does he focus on now? "I'm a big fantasy genre geek -- Dungeons & Dragons-type sword and sorcery stuff," Semjaza says. "I like to do some sci-fi work as well, though I always come back to fantasy. Once in a great while, for practice, I do self-portraits. Mostly though, as long as it's something you can't see out in your backyard, I like to draw it!"
Semjaza's artwork is definitely not something you'd find in your backyard -- it looks more like illustration or comic art. When asked if he had future plans for his artwork, Semjaza replied, "Long ago, I wanted to do comic books. I'm not opposed to the idea or anything, but I'm thinking more along the lines of illustration or game art (concept stuff, etc.) if I can get the work."

Of course we had to ask -- what's his favorite Warcraft-related subject to draw? "Absolute fave race to draw would be Forsaken -- they're zombies, after all, and zombies are cool!" Yes, yes they are -- as long as they stay off my lawn. Thanks for the look at your work Semjaza! To see more of Semjaza's creations, be sure to check out his gallery on Deviantart.

Wow... Those are the two hottest undead females I've ever seen.

Oh for the love of...
WoW artists, this announcement just in. Girls, they have boobs. Get over it. (also, like hell a forsaken would have that much remaining fat in the chest. -_-)

stuffed with teddy bear filling?

Oh for the love of...
People on the internet that I can not assume the gender of, this announcement just in. Men and lesbians, they like boobs. Get over it. (also, like hell a magical world where cows can talk and walk on water would have any physical rules on the quantity or quality of flesh.)

"Yes, they're real! They're not mine, but they're real!"
roseclown Oct 5th 2010 1:11AM
@Alchemistmerlin
Look, I know you all like boobs. Awesome, I like abs. Mmmm, abs... /trails off in awesome thoughts. Snaps self out.
But here is the thing: I don't concentrate on describing a man's abs in my writing/art to the detriment of the piece. This guy is a awesome artist, but from all the other comments with boobs in it, it shows that his fascination with blatantly sexing it up detracts from the art instead of enhancing it.
Also: I don't make men have unrealistic, monster abs in my art/writing/daydreams. Nor do I spend more time and detail on that then I do their face, emotions, and character development.
So yeah: Boobs, we have them. Stop talking to them instead of to my face. Which is essentially what this art amounts to, with your eyes being drawn to the bazoongas instead of the actual action of the piece.

Also,

I lol'ed irl. XD

Whoa, now I have to say, in general quite good, but a little off on the sizing and perspective. Sure illustrative technique is important, but perspective and structure of an anatomy is also important. How did that's Orc's axe not manage to slice through his back based on how it joins to the haft? The blade needs to be rotated a bit farther, or the haft moved up his shoulder a bit.
What? I started backwards through the gallery?
*urp!*
/nosebleed

These are really good!
The realistic portrayals are nice, especially in the Undead and Gnome.
DMacD Oct 4th 2010 11:35PM
roseclown u read my mind! lol
No disrespect meant to the Artist as i think his work is amazing but jeez it's starting to look like blizz hires adolescent boys to do it's Art work. The undead doesn't even look like undead the way they are portrayed in the game :-/
Other than that beautifull work.
moonblaze Oct 5th 2010 3:49AM
I'm sorry, why does it have to "look like undead the way they are portrayed in the game"? It's usually the other way around, the models in World of Warcraft are all based off concept art following an artist's style of work.
The game's models are both lacking in detail and uniqueness. In reality, no body looks the same, where as in WoW every body is the same with only a variation in skin tone.

Semjaza, awesome work! This is obviously professional caliber. As an artist, my jealousy rages. The only critism I had that might be constructive (as opposed to stylistic) would be on the Warlock. The amount of glow on her shoulders would affect her hair. You could be aware of it, and chosen not to incude it for 'artistic reasons.' (I.e. It would look bad.)
Again, awesome work! Jealousy rages and all that. Good luck!
(goes back to the cave to draw with HIS Wacom Bamboo and cry.)

That gnome is awesome.

"So my newly risen Death Knight, what will your first task in undeath be? The murdering of those whom you once served, the unleashing of your righteous fury upon the living?"
"No actually I thought I would make a set of armour that makes me look like the weird fantasy of a 13-year old boy."
"Er.... k?"
Zelius Oct 5th 2010 7:18AM
What? Like the Lich King doesn't want to get his groove on every once in a while.

I think the artwork is beautiful. The breasts were big -- but not all models have small breasts -- I was actually drawn to the thighs. They're very strong and muscular, and could crush a man between them. Scary, yet hot. I approve.
Overall incredible.
