WoW Insider's Weekly Webcomic: Safe Passage
Welcome to another edition of the WoW Insider's Weekly Comic, Safe Passage. This comic takes place post-Cataclysm, so there will be minor spoilers.
It's always nice to see that some people aren't as bad as they seem at first glance. So, don't go judging someone based on horrifically large muscles and spiky armor. It just doesn't end well for anyone.
Check out the full version right here, and tune in next Tuesday morning for a new page. You can also see all the previous pages in the gallery below.

Comic really needs to pick up the pace, 4 issues and almost nothing has happened.
Sterb Oct 5th 2010 11:54AM
You must be new to WoW Insider's comics. Byron moved at nearly the same pace.
On the other hand, lately we get resolution (unlike Lion's Pride Inn *cough*).
Griffe Oct 5th 2010 11:58AM
You know, this reminds me of something I read once
http://www.cracked.com/funny-2667-internet-comics/ (somewhat NSFW)
The 4th example.
It's really a problem with the medium. A Writer/ Artist can only do so much in a given week, and, really, who wold want a comic, or any kind of entertainment experience that is A GIANT WALL OF EXPOSITION?
The fact is: Building a story takes time. IF you have a problem with this, come back however many months from now when the comic is finished and read it then. Don't complain about an attempt at REAL storytelling.

I agree with Stabrad. The pace is really slow *given the nature of the presentation*. That's the really important part.
It seems that every time someone complains about the slow pace, someone else (ie Griffe) pops up to say that building a story takes time, artist can only do so much, etc etc. Which is all true, but that's not the point.
The problem is that the current format does not work well at all with the "one panel a week" presentation. I have no problem taking four panels (or more) to set up a scene, but when those four panels take literally a month to be shown you're really hurting the momentum of your story.
I made a comment on the "End of Byron recap" post about Kelly taking her time finishing this new comic and then posting one panel per day as a way to alleviate this problem, but apparently that idea wasn't a big hit. Too bad, because despite this comic being extremely well done it will suffer. Not because of the pacing of the story, but because of the way it's released to the public.

In before "it's moving too slow."
Oh, wait.
Amaxe Oct 5th 2010 12:28PM
Whether or not its moving too slow depends on how long the comic is intended to be. In other words, is Kelly working on a graphic novel or is it a "done in a month" kind of thing?
I think its too early to say "too slow" yet.

@ Griffe
You are so right.
I totally asked for a giant wall of exposition.
Thank you sir for shedding light on my ignorance.
All I am saying is, I waited a week to see a response to a kid running into the protagonist...sweet, at least I got to argue on the internet.
Griffe Oct 5th 2010 12:56PM
You stated your opinion.
I, in turn, stated mine.
No need to turn all jerky over it.

this comic is horrible, not funny, story doesnt draw me in either. Byron started off good then turned incredibly lame at then end. This one is starting off lame and probably going to end lamer
arixian Oct 5th 2010 12:42PM
I'm not ready to give up on it yet but I won't be holding out for much longer either. I'm all for building a story but we still have no real idea what this is even about so to this point I don't even really feel like the story is building, it's more like it's building up to a beginning and that I think is why it feels like it is moving so slowly.
Spider Oct 5th 2010 12:55PM
There's absolutely nothing wrong with this comic, but I think I have to agree that the story-telling format isn't ideal for a weekly basis. Engaged plotlines can become muddled when you only read one page a week, so I think something of this nature would be better suited to stand-alone humorous comics.
For stories like this to thrive I think a tri-weekly release would help with that, but I know that's a lot of work and probably not feasible. In that case the comedy style would work better in my opinion. :)
I'm going to keep reading this one of course, I'll enjoy it, but for the community as a whole I think an alternative idea might garner more interest. ^^

Whenever I think my attention span may be slipping as I get older, I can read the comments to any issue of the comic here at WoW Insider and realize I'm not doing so badly. The only thing I may need to work on is my patience with the constant cries of "Are we there yet?"
Al Oct 5th 2010 1:54PM
And that is why some Orcs are just impossible to take seriously.
Pig-tails, really? Even Obelix didn't make that look tough.
Amaxe Oct 5th 2010 3:23PM
Obelix was kind of hard to take seriously... as was the entire Asterix series... Kind of hard to be intimidating with names like Vitalstatistix, Cacophonix, Getafix, Geriatrix and Dogmatix (or so they are given in America... I understand the UK uses some different pun names, and it was hard to bring over the meaning from the original french puns)).
Also hard to be intimidating when the whole comic is slapstick to begin with ;-)
Al Oct 5th 2010 3:42PM
True, but when someone who can flatten an elite Legion of troops can't make a look seem tough, that look needs retiring.
He even punched out and ate some kind of Lovecraftian monster, so yeah.
Dreyja Oct 5th 2010 2:38PM
Geez people, you really can't enjoy bite-sized bits of awesomesauce? Really I love the little details we get every week. I mean are we all A.D.D. around here? X-p Be patient it'll be worth it. I mean, the look on Big Orcs face and the pat on the head is gold for me.
Cadychan Oct 5th 2010 3:43PM
I'm sorry all of you think the story is moving too slow (again).
I don't know if it means much at this point, but I'm honestly really trying harder! I've teamed up with a writer, so things will be moving along faster. Aside from that, if you don't like the comic, there's nothing I can do. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. :)
I'm actually talking with my leads to TRY - keyword is TRY - and do two pages a week. Including my own personal comic (WoW Eh?), that would top me at three pages a week.
Top that with a full-time job, and I'm looking at about an 80-hour work week... XD;
In any case, you guys - the readers - are very important to me, so I'm seeing what kind of scheduling changes I can manage.
Again, no promises, but I'll try!
Amaxe Oct 5th 2010 3:56PM
we don't all think this is moving too slow here. Just do what you think feels best :-)
Al Oct 5th 2010 3:59PM
Look on the bright side, it got people to stop asking about the Alliance.
Dreyja Oct 5th 2010 4:13PM
The last thing we'd want is for you to burn out. Some of us are enjoying this immensely. Will you injure your arm if you draw too much?
