Ol' Grumpy's guide to Cataclysm instance protocols

- After a few weeks, those jerks who constantly say "go go go" in runs will have died a lot and will either have stopped playing or learned to stop doing that.
- Same for people who feel the need to pull while the tank/rest of the group is regaining mana and so on.
- Abilities that haven't seen much use in Wrath of the Lich King will probably make a comeback. You're going to need to learn to Polymorph, Sap, Trap, Hex and use other forms of CC.
- For the first few months of Cataclysm, at least, there will have to be more of a focus on skill and execution than numbers. Switching targets properly, not breaking CC before it's called for, and using your abilities at the right time will be rewarded.
- You're going to get whole new dungeons you haven't seen hundreds of times already, with all-new mechanics. Glory in once again having no idea what this pull does.
- The return of CC also means the return of marking pulls. As I said literally hundreds of times back in The Burning Crusade, I did not put all those shapes above mobs' heads because Lucky the Leprechaun promised me a balanced breakfast.
- Tanks and healers are going to be expected to carry more of the weight in individual instance runs. Frankly, if DPS pulls aggro, breaks CC or otherwise gets attention, it's likely they're going to die. When that happens, don't blame your healer for not healing you and don't blame the tank.
- Tanks are going to have to relearn asking for CC. No, you can't just tank six mobs. No, you can't. Even if you could somehow hold aggro on them, you'd die. You simply can't play it the way you have been, trying to zerg down every trash pull.
- DPS players, get ready to wait in the LFD tool. Get ready to wait a really long time. Expect to see queues go way, way up as a result of tanking and healing becoming more demanding. Many people who are tanking now are not going to have the patience to mark every pull and explain every fight. Many people who are healing now will not be able to adjust to the new triage system. You are going to see extended wait times; learn to cope with them.
The new old basics
First up, if you're a tank, get used to being expected to mark pulls, explain how you intend them to go and lead the instance. Other players can do this, to be sure, but it almost always devolves upon the tank. So step up to it. And please, try and familiarize yourself with your group and its capacities. If you have a priest healer, a shadow priest DPSer, a fury warrior DPSer and a ret paladin DPSer in addition to yourself as a bear druid, don't ask the shadow priest to sheep. Don't ask the fury warrior for Chains of Ice. The ret paladin and shadow priest have CC options; learn what they are.
Second, learn to ignore that "go go go" guy. He's an idiot. Don't pull until your healer is ready. You can ask, or you can look at his mana bar; I personally prefer to ask, if there's any doubt. Don't rush your groups and don't let anyone else rush them, either. Do not try to be a tyrant. I can't stress this enough. Many tanks, when faced with a situation that is stressful, find themselves treating the group like the enemy. They're not. Control your prima donna instincts.
DPS players, by all means offer to pull if you have a longer range than the tank. But don't pull without asking first; even if the tank can get the mob back, it's just rude and makes chaos more likely. Use your CC intelligently if asked, and please learn to reapply it. Follow the markings, please. Taunts aren't magical bullets that fix all aggro problems. If you're more experienced and a better choice to lead a run than a tank, by all means speak up. As long as you do so without being a jerk, a lot of tanks might welcome someone else's doing the labor of marking and explaining. Just be cool about it; it's often easier for a DPS player to see the whole fight, and good tanks will know that. Don't be overly pushy with this, however.
Healers, make sure groups let you get your mana back if you feel like they're not. In many ways, the healer is the most important person in the group, and in Cataclysm dungeons, the new triage system of healing is going to put a lot of pressure on you until you learn it. No, it's not your fault if a DPS player dies because he broke CC or pulled aggro, or if a tank died because he tried to tank way too much. Don't let these things discourage you. If you have a valid, working form of CC that you can use without taking away from healing, please do.
For everyone, I must tell you, learn to accept a wipe. Wipes are going to happen. In the first few months wipes are going to happen frequently. Instances will be new to players, some players will be new to their class or role, and the mechanics of play are a lot less forgiving. If you're in the habit of dropping group as soon as a wipe happens, don't waste your time queuing up. You'll just end up annoyed.
In general, we're about to see a paradigm shift in how instances work, and being a good group player means being at least cool and somewhat considerate of the other players. Try it and see. It makes runs much easier for everyone.

I have a lot of thoughts on this, but they can be summed up pretty easily with a simple observation:
If tanking is so easy in Wrath content, then why are so many people offering to pay tanks for random heroic queues? Tanks are scarce in Wrath, and will be even more scarce if many dungeon pulls require the tank to micro manage raid marks and a team of pick up members.
I enjoy tanking; I always have, even in Vanilla and BC. I was sad to see how easy tanking was in Wrath. Yet, as sad as I was, I was equally excited to see that I could play a healing class or a dps class with almost any decent tank. Since tanking was much easier, the pool of tanks expanded. While I had a hard time finding a raid slot (I tanked everything in Wrath eventually), I was happily filling raid roles I'd never imagined I could play.
I'm worried that this new expansion will complicate the role of tank so much that it will scare away many who were adequate in Wrath. Given the scarcity of dungeon running tanks already, I don't really see how that can be a good thing. I'm not saying that tanking must be easy to attract more tanks. But I am wholeheartedly saying I don't believe making tanking more difficult is the answer.
And to those of you who express sentiments along the lines of "welcome to old school wow," you can stuff it. Old school wow had all kinds of problems that have become obscured by our nostalgia and knee-jerk rejection of the new go-go mentality. Cataclysm will have to walk a very fine line to continue subscriber growth, as well as ensure a proper mix of classes/roles within the player base.

If you were "only average" throughout all of Wrath, that's a sign that you didn't want to become better and are upset that Cataclysm is taking you out of your comfort zone and forcing you to actually do stuff instead of let the group mindlessly AoE everything. Which, easy and quick as it may be, is also really boring after a while. Vanilla WoW had its problems, but actually working together as a team and using your full set of abilities wasn't one of them.

I'm not sure where you got the "only average" quote from. I never said nor implied that. In fact, I'm a rather good tank. As I stated, I didn't raid tank much since I was free from the burden of tanking. Tanking was more easily accessible, so I wasn't compelled (strongly urged) by my guild(s) to tank everything.
Mindlessly AOEing everything is boring. No disagreement here. But the problem is that these are heroics. We will be entering these dungeons possibly dozens of times while we gear our toons- main specs, offspecs, and alts, etc. I'm not excited first, for the prospect of finding tanks who will tolerate that level of group coordination for gearing runs through heroics. And second, the prospect of reinventing the wheel every time I enter a heroic dungeon to clear it ('that's not the mark my guild uses for sap'; 'I always kill the deathbringer first'; 'why should I sap when we have a mage here?') is highly unappealing.
I think the tough pulls should be reserved for raids. Group coordination is fun and challenging there. In heroics, that are run daily, and sometimes multiple times each day, it is tedious.

I am so looking forward to this. As a hunter, I never STOPPED CCing stuff. Even in five mans. If a caster was too far out, I'd launch a trap on it. This does sound like it will take a bit more teamwork, potentially difficult to manage in the LFD system, but the rewards will be great! I'm very excited about this.

Warlocks now have a glyph for fear, that makes their target just stand in place. I noticed it was not mentioned in the CC. This is very amazing, especially since fear will most likely not break to a little aoe if people are still..."rusty" from face rolling in WotLK. Who knew fear could be one of the best new CC's in the game. XD

The effect on gameplay of ramping up the difficulty is an opinion. You might like it, you might not like it.
The effect on WoW as a business can't be good. Sure the "everything is too easy" crowd will be happy, but most of them were paying customers already. A "bad" 's $15 a month is still money, and if they cant get through a heroic they'll withdraw their $15 because no sane person pays $15 a month for trade chat.
I'm shocked blizzard went through all the trouble of making a dungeon finder and a new tank class only to discourage tanks and to make their dungeon finder a death sentence.

Considering that the only times I can play are a) during the one hour at night after 2nd shift but before I have to go to bed so I can wake up early for 1st shift and b) on weekends when I have my (little) kids here, I don't think I can really afford to spend 30+ minutes waiting for an instance and then 60+ minutes slogging through it due to repeated corpse runs and the new chant "slow slow slow".
I might have to level through quests after all, and hope Blizz gets their shit worked out by the time I'm ready to hit heroics.

I think this is GREAT! as a healer myself, having those "go go go" asses die, i'll be more than happy to simply not heal em! and if a tank goes far beyond his capacities, should die, even if it ends up wiping the whole group.
CC'ing was fun, was organized, was clean, i think this changes are going to bring back a lot of what sort of disappeared from the game, order, calmness and fun.

Awesome article. I have an 80 in each group and I truly understand the complaints of each group. I am certainly looking forward to something other than Ab-Ab-Ab-Ab-Am! That's what spellsteal, polynorph and invisibility were given to us for. (The new invisibility is awesome but I haven't needed it yet). Thinking instead of just jamming keys.
As a tank I find that my DK is not a lot different but Paladin really, really miss being able to spam consecrate. Healing - hmmm, not sure if I will be willing to heal during the first part of Cata. Depends on how desperate we are for healers.

As for random dungeon queues becoming excessively long for DPS, just make friends with a few tanks. You can queue up with them to get into dungeons quicker. Familiarity will also help solve the problem of DPS who queue with the "I don't care, I just want Justice Points" mentality. More people will be willing to Tank difficult instances if they don't have to deal with people dragging the group down because they can't play nice. Just my two cents.
