Well, I was more specifically talking about over-all damage done. Sure the dps numbers will sky rocket for the mage but that does not equate to total damage. Let us assume that the mage dies in about 3 seconds after his little stunt, but the group was able to pick things up and pull through. For simplicity of numbers, lets say that the mage only attacked 5 mobs and the dot component ticked for a total of 100 damage each, and dealt 50 aoe damage to all targets after 12 seconds (we are also assuming that target swapping takes 0 time, there is no gcd nor aoe damage cap, procs, crits, haste, resistance, gay truckers, what have you). If I have done my maths right, this would come out to a total of 1750 raw total damage, or roughly 146 dps over 12 seconds. Now, let us also assume that this mage took a whopping 20% out of each mob's total hp, leaving them with 7k hp each. We can already tell that pretty much all group members (healer aside) will overtake that mage in terms of damage dealt by the end of the fight. And the mage gets kicked from the group immediately after for being an asshat; dps aren't exactly difficult to replace.TL;DR? Short lived, heavy burst does not compare to steady, reliable damage in a pve setting.
