Breakfast Topic: Gratitude for all things epic

It was mind-rottingly boring. Never mind all the other criticisms that I'd read about the game, from copy-pasted terrain to artificially-capped leveling to even my bro-in-law's gripe about not having an auction house (players need to talk to other players' mule NPCs to find out what they're selling -- which means you can end up spending hours talking to hundreds of NPCs looking for what you want to purchase). I'm giving Square Enix a pass on all of that. Because I wasn't actually playing the game but simply watching over my bro-in-law's shoulder as he played, none of those things actually bothered me. No, what ate away at me to no end was the fact that he was beating up on unimpressive creatures that barely went past his knees.
The whole time he was fighting, all I could see was his character's back. Shrews, mushrooms, fireflies ... he was up against an assortment of what we in Azeroth would typically classify as critters. He was beating up critters! It was hair-tearingly, underwhelmingly mundane! He even mentioned the dreaded ladybug, which can kill entire parties. No, seriously, it's a freaking ladybug about the size of a melon that kills scores of players. I'd come to expect fantastic designs from the same company that popped out toys like Bahamut or Odin or Gilgamesh -- but here it is making players fight freaking ladybugs! The firefly was just a tiny blob of light, not even like those oversized insects in Zangarmarsh. It's honestly a tiny speck ... that can kill you.
It smacked of laziness and it infuriated me. It upset me so much that a game company would have the gall to demand subscription fees and chuck out the laziest graphics for enemies. My brother-in-law assured me that cooler enemies would come at higher levels. Great. With the artificial leveling cap, though, those epic enemies would only start to show up after a month or two of grinding knee-high marsupials and mushrooms. Unfortunately, I'm not sure my brain wouldn't have been liquefied out of boredom by then.
I'm sorry, but Blizzard spoiled me. At lower levels, sure, you're probably fighting enemies about your size, but Blizzard doesn't seem the type to insult player intelligence by tossing them against ladybugs of doom. There isn't a shortage of oversized insects or hefty humanoids in the game. Later on, there are truly gigantic menaces like dragons and the like. It feels ... epic. So I'm thankful for the experience. When the Cataclysm sunders Azeroth, Stormwind will be ravaged by Deathwing himself, who leaves gigantic, smoldering claw marks at the entrance. Everyone gets to experience that, even new level 1 players.
What about the game feels truly epic to you? And what experience in other games, whether they be MMOs or otherwise, have left you with the same feeling of entrancement and awe? On the flip side, have you played any other games that have felt incredibly unspectacular?

Heh. I remember commenting here a few months ago about how the purple thunder lizards in the Barrens scared the holy hell outta me when I was a newbie... and heck, you can find even lower-level green versions of the mob in Durotar! I think running into a beast that huge as low as level 9 is pretty darn impressive.

Scared the bejeezus out of me on my first toon.
Wirhl Oct 8th 2010 8:59AM
My first thought to this question was exactly this. The ?thunder lizards? in Durotar in that canyon. My first toon was my orc warrior and when I got to that part I remember nervously pulling each one individually thinking these things are huge and will stomp me into lightning fried paste. It took me longer to finish the quest in that canyon than WotLK instance runs today.
I remember well aggro'ing a second and running like a gnome screaming out of the canyon only to learn what respawns meant.
So many "epic" memories thinking of my first toon. The sea giants in Feralas, the dragons in Badlands, the ghost dragon in Aszhara, the fel iron reaver in Hellfire...first time a sound from a video game has made me jump and actually experience panic. :)

Newbie Boz: "Did that dinosaur just kill me with a lightning bolt it shot out of its mouth?"
Yes, yes it did.

I remember the first time the Fel Iron Reaver got me. Scared the proverbial crap out of me.
As far as Original WoW I was in awe the first time I saw Ragnaros. This HUGE Fire god looking down as us as if we were just ants ready to be squashed.

I'm totally going to second (third) the Fel Reaver. Whoever came up with that beast should be shot.
Did the camera just shake?
Yep, I guess it did. It just shook again...
WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
/screams like a girl

Fel Reaver and the Devilsaurs for me...
Devilsaurs, for being as large as they are, sure know how to stealth.
And the fel reaver, while I never really saw him do it in BC, tends to like rocket boosting across the map, he'll one shot one of my characters and keep on going

Ladybugs sounds like early WoW Hogger

You've just downed some Hellboars or whatever and you sit down for a quick drink of Filtered Draenic Water to refresh yourself. And then your tankard ripples.

Again, circles on the water.
THOOM

Fel Reaver???
I was welcomed in Outland by a horde of demons, pitlords and crazy succubus of doom attacking the Dark Portal!!!
I swear, I was like: F**K! These demons are going to destroy everything!!!!ONE! I immediately positioned my level 60 mage at full range from those footmen and spent a whole mana bar trying to kill it.
ambermist Oct 8th 2010 1:06PM
Lol, Devilsaurs.
Level 50-ish (I guess) baby Ambermist heads into Un'Goro. "Oh look!" she says, "A quest!" Delighted to discover that this is a special quest just for her class, she heads off to follow the instructions. Eventually, she is told to take the Devilsaur Barb and test its pacification abilities on a Devilsaur. "Hmm, That's an elite dinosaur. Oh well, maybe the barb makes it non-elite; they wouldn't give me a quest that would kill me," she said, right before she died.
Good times.

I remember being overwhelmed by epicness the first time I saw Mulgore and Thunderbluff. Also beating Deadmines for the first time because it was my first dungeon ever. And the night elf starting area is just so beautiful and almost alien; it felt totally immersive to me the first time I played.
On the flip side, there's always Conquer Online. Where jumping is the fastest form of locomotion. Seriously. Your human character has to jump everywhere.
Anathemys Oct 8th 2010 8:17AM
That's because he actually has pogo sticks for legs. Seriously.
SunGod228 Oct 8th 2010 8:25AM
So glad dead mines is coming back in Cata best one of the best dungeons in the game
Andrew Oct 8th 2010 1:22PM
Deadmines... the only low level dungeon where, back in the day, there was an anti-wipe protocol in case of emergencies; the "OH SH**" Wheel.
Not to mention the dreaded goblin forge. Friggen nightmares, man.
Chokaa Oct 8th 2010 8:10AM
The first game I tried after wow was Age of Conan, and the only thing I truly enjoyed was taking the top off of my Tempest of Set... I went back to Warcraft shortly after. The combat system for melée in AoC was annoying as balls, casters were alright but healing was terrible. Every single spell has a ridiculous cooldown, and barely usable. Spamming
Chain heal might be a little boring, but at least you aren't locked out of healing someone fr 10+ seconds!
InfiniteAbyss Oct 8th 2010 8:15AM
Being a lvl 8 and trying to kill hogger on my rogue. Give me ladybugs anyday
Saeadame Oct 8th 2010 12:26PM
I honestly wouldn't mind having to kill ladybugs as like a first or second quest (ie, when you're at level 1). Maybe something from either the Undead or the Goblins. Can't you just see them being terribly, terribly annoyed at these little red fuckers buzzing around?
Eregos ftw! Oct 9th 2010 11:35AM
You go kill lady bugs then. I'll go kill the loch king who threatens to take over the ENTIRE of Azeroth
Have 'fun'! I sure will
Eregos ftw! Oct 9th 2010 11:44AM
I'm going to go kill the king of Scottish lakes now.
