Guest Post: Confessions of a noob rogue

Back in the dark ages of history, in vanilla World of Warcraft, I rolled a rogue. This was before battlegrounds, when dishonorable kills were a fear and world PvP was a rush, when men were men, mages sheeped for fun and warlocks ... well, let's just say that warlocks have a reputation that they've earned.
World of Warcraft was my first MMO, after coming from persistent worlds hosted by Neverwinter Nights. I played a rogue there, too, steeped in Dungeons & Dragons rules and the like. World of Warcraft was both nothing like and exactly like my roguish experiences before -- a sneak who dealt devastating damage with small weapons, no matter whether the target was gnome or giant, fearsome orc or fiery dragon.
In the midst of a Westfall investigation (tasked by SI:7 to infiltrate a tower), I noticed a few growing complaints in guild chat: "We have seven rogues in the guild but only one priest; would someone please roll a priest?" I told them I would, sent my rogue back to the character select screen, and rolled the character that would take up the entirety of my vanilla experience.
I took a hiatus during The Burning Crusade due to some computer problems and only came back just after Ulduar launched in Wrath of the Lich King. I looked at my rogue, but shook my head; a friend of mine said tanks were needed, so I rolled a dwarven warrior and once again never looked back. He was my first level 80, soon to be followed by a level 80 draenei hunter.
Finally, a few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to try the rogue class again. I've dealt with mana, dealt with rage -- now I wanted to see energy, the rogue's resource. I wanted to try it fresh, simply because I didn't even know what I had on Sharp's action bars, let alone how to play him. I wanted to see the game from level 1 again.
Sharp was reborn a Night Elf Rogue after 3.3 dropped. I was astounded. "What's this?" I asked. I was given dual wielding straight off the bat! Level 1, thin the area of wolves, gather some fel moss, quest, quest, quest. By level 5, I was Gouging, Backstabbing and Sinister Striking my way to victory. These mobs had no chance against my lightning-quick reflexes; I was Slicing and Dicing my way through them like the proverbial hot knife through butter.
That is, until I left the starting area and accidentally pulled three mobs.
Risky business
Back up a bit: My main is a warrior tank who's dual-specced with fury. My primary alt is a hunter. I've never had a problem with multi-mob pulls. Yeah, they can get a little hairy, but you use Intimidating Shout and fear them away, or you Whirlwind them to death, or you Shockwave them into submission; as a hunter, you simply freeze one, let the pet tank one and kite the other one around, making sure you don't gain the attention of any other murderous things in the area.
As a rogue, unless you have Vanish, you ... die?
No, rogues aren't as squishy as a mage or warlock, but a mage or warlock doesn't have to get up close to a hulking furbolg, stick sharp pieces of metal into its face and try to come out victorious.
It's all about timing
Not only that, but you actually have to time out your resources! Coming from a level 80 warrior with almost limitless rage generation potential, and having played a hunter with their bottomless pools of mana, I was surprised by how many times I heard: Not enough energy for that. I don't have enough energy. Stop pressing the button. I can't do that yet. I have no Energy. Stop being a douche.
It was around level 15 when I finally got the hang of timing out my strikes, making sure I had enough resources to use a finishing move or an interrupt (Gouge or Kick) that could save my polygonal behind. Downloading some addons that make tracking my combo points and energy generation helped a lot in that arena, as well.
Still, those playstyle problems didn't stand a chance next to the coolness factor of being a stealthy, invisible assassin, a shadow that no one sees until it's too late. I'm specced subtlety at the moment (and yes, I know combat is more efficient). But this will be my third alt that I've seriously worked on. (Having a level 10 druid so I could bear dance doesn't count.) I rolled my priest because he was needed; same with my tank. I want to play this rogue the way I envision him: a shadow.
The only thing a shadow fears? Accidentally messing up the Sap attempt against a target's traveling buddy. Vanish!

Until you run into a member of the opposite faction.
lieandswell Oct 9th 2010 10:53PM
That's why you don't level as Subtlety.

Leveling as Sub is not for taking on multiple mobs and powering through the leveling experience. It's about style and finesse. And feeling cool when you sneak through a large area packed with mobs to kill the one you need. And picking-pockets so you can use that skill as you level, instead of going back after you cap and dully grinding it up. And, if you're into it, messing with players of the opposite faction.
Also, people say Sub rogues don't get as much xp since they skip through mobs like that. But I'd be very interested to do an actual study: since skipping mobs let's us complete quests faster, I'd bet a talented Sub rogue would go even faster than combat or assassination.

I'm levelling an alt Sub Rogue right now and have no problems questing and levelling pretty fast. For me, subtlety is all about the mindset and being...well....roguey.

This article is going to get into my special 'Stories of How It Feels To Be a Rogue' -collection.
I have a rogue as main, always had. My nephews always rant me about being the ultimate killing tool in the game, dishonorable sneaker (they play clothies, warlock, mage and priest). They go on until I ask them to level one. None of them has a rogue past 30.
One of them has many alts nearing 70 and a full table of characters, but when looking closer he has two priests. What's missing??? The rogue. He just can't take the beating a rogue takes after leaving the starting zone's comforting safety of non-aggressive mobs.
Being a rogue requires a special mindset, unlike any other character in the game (well, maybe warlocks, but they are weird nonetheless). Switching from, say, a mage to rogue doesn't happen that easy. You are without shield spells, you fight at arms reach of your target. I like it that way. Clean and efficient.

I have nine eighties and a lot of 60-70's, including four rogues (80, 74, 70, 66). /qualifications
Of all the classes, rogue is the biggest bitch to level nowdays. It has the most downtime, the least killing power and no AOE (unless you're combat and like to bash bricks against your head, in which case you get a few seconds of 2-target AOE every 2 minutes). It has one AOE spell if blade flurry is not counted, and that's fan of knives.... acquired at LEVEL 80.
That's right, you can't AOE until you've hit heroics. So not only is your solo leveling lacklustre, you can't even take refuge in groups. Any other class with a half-decent player behind it will beat you to the ground in damage and dps. Add to this that if you want a less painful leveling experience (MoD, improved stealth speed, maybe the +ambush crit talents), particularly on a PvP server, you have to go at least some way into subtlety and leveling talents, which kills your damage even further in instances.
And yes, it really is that bad. Bandage/eat every 2-4 mobs. Two same level mobs on you? Cooldowns. Three mobs? Best vanish and try that pull again. It's most telling when you arrive in outland. Even with BoA weaponry and after acquiring BC gear upgrades, the entirety of Hellfire Peninsula is painfully brutal.
It's highlighted even more if you were to create a blood death knight, which also deals mainly in physical damage, and bring it to outland at 58 with its default quest gear (which is slightly below outland quality). Proceed to two-shot infernals, pull 8~ fel orcs at once, solo Cruel's Intentions and come out of it all with full health, roaring for the next pull. It's not just death knights, though. Non-holy paladins, shadow priests, warriors, non-resto druids, warlocks, mages, shaman, hunters... some are more adept at others at melting face but they are all significantly ahead of our poor pointy-weaponed friends.
I can only hope that Cataclysm helps to smooth the leveling experience over.

I should note that the only other painful leveling experiences are the priest, prior to obtaining vampiric touch at 50, and enhancement shaman, prior to 41~. But at least they don't have to wait for 80 :P. I've purposely left out healing specs in this comparison ;)

much respect to the sadist who can actually stick with leveling a rogue. I've tried and it was just painful "not enough nahgeee, i cahnt do dat yet". I made it to about level 20 and just deleted that rogue yesterday to make room for new cata toons.
The main reason I rolled it in the first place was because my first and main toon is a lock and of course everyone knows the rogue is my nemesis, so I wanted to learn the tricks of the rogue and how to counter it.
The rogue started out ok but then when I started having multiple mobs on my ass it was either dead or manage to escape and eat/bandage every other mob. Maybe I was just doing it wrong but I finally had enough and gave up on it.

I started my first rogue not too long ago and have to say that I'm enjoying the experience. After having mained paladins (prot and/or ret) for so long it breathed a new, fresh breath of life into the game with it's very different play style.
I'm speced Combat Swords/Axes. So the only skills you have that has any aoe potential before level 80 is Blade Flurry and Killing Spree. You're just going to have to accept that your performance on the damage meters will be poor at best and try to do your best with what you have. I find that popping Blade Flurry then Killing Spree in a trash pack really makes the numbers flow on the right side of my screen. And your moment to shine comes with single target bosses.
I've also haven't had that many issues soloing, even on a PVP server. Of course I knew going into it that I wasn't going to be able to blow through everything like I did on my ret pally. A rogue works best when they stalk and pick and choose what they want to fight. You learn very quickly that discretion is the better part of valor when playing a rogue.

This has to be the most worthless article I ever seen on this website.

DRP here.
That... really hurt my feelings.
Ouch man. I thought we were bros. I thought we had brotherhood. I thought...
Wait.
No, I forgot. You're the douche. Whew! I was sad there for a moment.
@ everyone else
Thanks for reading!

Permission to state that obvious troll is obvious?
Anyway, I should waste my breath on this douchelord, but I can't resist. Some of us like these nostalgic pieces, discussions/thoughts on classes that give us an insight into another's playing style and the comments that they generate.

I have a rogue...found that using two BoA trinks and other BoA gear and having herbalism helps a ton. The 'lifeblood' skill that you get from herbalism is a huge boon in survivability, decreases downtime, and if you get alchemy to go with herbalism you can get solid dps buffs. Multiple mob pulls get easier with sapping and all of that.
Granted I play normally with the mentality of a tank (like the author, I have a dwarf 80) and I have died my share of times as the rogue...but I do enjoy the challenge and love seeing the big crits. I also take comfort in the knowledge that Cata will hopefully be more favorable to rogues with increased importance in CC and single target.
CrossEyed Oct 11th 2010 11:38AM
My first trial, I started an Undead Rogue.. Got to around lvl 11 and rolled a Tauren Hunter. When I finally started back playing again and started on a new trial my first character was a Troll rogue. I loved it, got him to 63 and got a little tired of Outlands mob clusters that without AoE could be annoying and rolled an Unholy DK. The DK is now my only 80 but once I got out of outlands I really missed my rogue...
My plans are now to roll a new Goblin Rogue when Cata hits and embrace the new combat leveling experience and get more into PVP than I have been recently. I've tried PVP with my DK, and I do fairly decent with him, but I just like the rogue styles so much more...

glad you feel that way, but no thanks over here.

I will admit, I am still pretty new to WoW in general. I only started playing about a year and a half ago, and took a 4 month break until up about a week ago. My main is a 70 Prot Pally, and my alt is a 45 Holy Priest ... and then a bunch of 20's and 30's. I have read a lot of comments about Rogues not doing so well ..... but how the hell did we run an entire dungeon the other night with a Rogue tank? I was DPSing on one of my lower level Mage's (since I just about always either heal or tank), and I swear this guy was just killing it.
Just a good Rogue, good spec, good gear ... or just a low level instance? It impressed me enough to go back to my 18 Rogue and try it again ..... though coming from a plate wearer I don't know how long it will last.

5 level 80 toons here and none of them rogues. They have always Intrigued me but I have never really sat down and ground one to 80.
I have a couple of rogues, on 2 different servers. one is @ level 27 as of lastnight and the other is at level 49. They are both combat rogues.
The higher level rogue has primarily leveled in BG the lower was just suppose to be a proffession toon for a new server I was playing on.
Lastnight was the first time since the patch that I decided to try one of rogues again and all I can say is wow! I seem to be taking out the mobs much easier/faster now.
I think I better blow the dust off my level 49 and head for the BG. Since I stacked him with all the heirlooms one can get since level 1 just for the BG.
lol this is going to be fun. **evilgrin**
