Breakfast Topic: To what lengths have you gone for your raid?

This isn't a question of the things you do in game for the raid's success. We've all farmed mats for buffs and resistance gear, done dailies to pay repair bills and patiently given up our slots when the group needed another class. No, today's topic is about the efforts and sacrifices players make in the real world because the show must go on!
In the early days of Wrath, my guild was working on 25-man Malygos. For one reason or another, we were struggling. At the time, I was one of the top DPSers in the guild, knew the fight well and was helping the raid leader to coordinate our efforts. But the night we finally downed him, I was a little rumbly in the tumbly (I blame the Dragonbreath Chili), and as the wipes kept coming with no end in sight, my situation was getting dire. Despite our unsuccessful attempts, morale was up, as was the momentum, and I knew the kind of havoc an extended bio break could wreak on this fragile state of affairs.
Finally, I knew that I had to act, quickly, quietly, and with all the dignity I could muster (which is to say, little at any given time). While the rest of the raid was rezzing and running back, I swooped up my laptop and moved to a more porcelain seating arrangement just in time ... for the next attempt. To this day, my guildies have no idea where I was when we finally killed that damned dragon, nor why I suddenly sounded so echoey in Vent -- but for me, the ends truly justified the means.
So, WoW Insider readers, what have you done IRL to secure in-game success? Was it worth it, or did your efforts swirl down the drain?

That is true dedication.

True dedication would involve him having a bucket / chamber pot handy to lower downtime.
It's all about efficiency!

As we were running a progress night in the Crimson Hall a long time ago, everyone was stoked cause we where doing so well and no one wanted to stop. Not even our ret paladin who were throwing up in a bucket between every pull on the way there and between every atempt on the queen.
The worst I've done myself was on a night with Sindragosa when I had a terrible fever but at least I kept all of my bodily fluids.

That is not dedication...
I know a guy who, on a night of good attempts, wasn't feeling good and barfed on himself and kept tanking.
That is dedication.
We still talk about it like a year later

I know some one who shat their pants rather than go to the bathroom during his guilds first vashj kill (might have been server first too)

I've raided on a laptop (not exactly a gaming laptop, oh boy, no!) when my PC broke. It might not sound extreme but it was summer and the keyboard in it tended to heat up MASSIVELY from the inside. It literally hurt to touch the buttons. And it hurt even more to tank HM Freya.

I know your pain. I used to raid on a Macbook Pro. Great computer, horrible heat dissipation. It got uncomfortable just resting my hands next to the trackpad after a long night of raiding.

did this really just get published?

No, you're having the world's most boring dream.

Seems like a fair expression of surprise. Dunno why the downrating.

I got an aggro wife and a gaming schedule agreed before hand with her, yet I've managed to raid a couple of times when she's VERY tired and goes to sleep early.

I bought a vent server for a year when we reformed (back in BC days). Then, i even left it for them when i transferred away because the guild leader was being a dill-hole. I was tempted several times after the fact to go retake what was rightfully mine (because of flames on the guild forums and a whole lot of douchbaggery), but i ultimately couldn't force myself to do that to the rest of my friends just to get back at one person.

You know, with vent controls being what they are, you could have easily banned his the GM's IP address from Vent. Or set up ranks and permissions and had his login be "Grand douchebag dill-hole the almighty" or something equally fun while he held the lowest rank so anyone could boot him off vent if he bothered them.
That reminds me, I gotta go fiddle with some vent controls. I want to have some fun.

This might be a bit too blue, but back in the days of kara, I was raiding and the bf was horny, so I ended up getting some under the desk action (which makes tanking quite difficult) while playing. This only went on for a bit, because we kept wiping at nightbane (I think) and I decided to call it a night. Not sure if any of my guildies ever knew the real reason I left.
Josin Oct 11th 2010 8:14AM
I think based on the original topic, you're well within the bounds of good taste. (Or I'd assume so, based on your boyfriend's actions.)
Sleutel Oct 11th 2010 8:44AM
Yes, you're a true hero, sacrificing yourself like that.
Oh wait, it wasn't something you did for the good of the raid. At all. And it probably contributed to the wipes.
