To directly answer your restated question, as long as there's still mystery and unanswered questions surrounding the origins and motives of the Old Gods, it'll be an easy story to "get into" and be interested it. If it were fully explained and was no longer in any way mysterious, then it would be a hard to get into. It then becomes trivia about the past rather than an ongoing story, a mystery to explore...
