Addon survival guide for Patch 4.0.1
Patch day is here, and with that comes addon headache after headache. Brace yourself for some pain, ladies and gentlemen. Hopefully, this little checklist will weaken the blow when all of your stuff breaks all over the floor.
Keep in mind a few things before you go throw your hands up in the air, swear to all that is holy and start sacrificing addons on the altar. Many of your favorite addon creators have been quietly working in the background on Cataclysm versions of their addons, presumably ready to go for patch 4.0.1. As of right now, we're technically in Cataclysm, and the addon sites are marking addons that are supported in this patch as either "supports game version 4.0.1" or "Cataclysm." By making sure you update all of your addons, you will probably not have too much to worry about.
Step 1: Back up
Making a copy of your Interface and WTF folders is probably a good idea. Leave this copy off somewhere away from your main WoW directory and keep it as a "just in case" copy. Label it as such, since you can always rename the folders.
Make a list of your critical addons that you don't want to forget to update. You don't want to feel lost without that one addon you love to rely on.
Step 2: Turn on "Load out of date addons"
On the character select screen, clicking the Addons button will open up a selection window, allowing you to turn on and off installed addons. Up near the top right of the window is a button labeled "Load out of date addons." Choosing this option will load addons that are not flagged as up to date for patch 4.0.1 but will still run.
For the most part, addons will still function in 4.0.1 even if they aren't designed or rewritten for the new patch, barring those that use features that have been disabled or changed by 4.0.1. For instance, back when AVR had its functionality disabled, subsequently destroying the addon's features, loading the addon in an out-of-date state would wreck your system because the code was not meshing well with Blizzard's system.
Step 3: Update your addons
Many of your favorite addons are all ready and raring to go, with updates on your favorite addon site. Addon sites like Curse and WoWInterface have a tag for compatibility with 4.0.1 as well as notifiers that let you know if an addon is ready to roll with patch 4.0.1.
Curse has a handy filter for addons tagged with its Cataclysm badge, easily pointing you to updated addons that will work with the new patch.
If you are going to be raiding on Tuesday or Wednesday, it's a good idea to get your DBM/DXE or your raid warning addon of choice up to date. Luckily, most of these addons have been ready to go and were just awaiting the patch to hit.
If you use an addon compilation, check that compilation's page for any updates, if available. You may lose some settings if you run the whole deal before updating, but if your compilation is getting an update, you should be in good shape once that update is available.
Update: Reddit user Rinascita posted an awesome list of addons that didn't have too much trouble making the jump to 4.0.1 here.
Safety first
Here's the most important issue, and everyone needs to be cognizant of this danger: Addons are one of the biggest targets for hackers, account phishers and bad guys looking to take your accounts. Fake addon sites and fake addons are out there and easily mistakable from the trusted addon repositories. For your safety, only update your addons from known sources, like Curse or WoWInterface.
Stay safe, stay calm and don't worry if you have to reconfigure something now -- it's the perfect time to try new addons or a new configuration.
This is it! Patch 4.0.1 begins the slide into December's upcoming expansion. It's a whole new game from here on out. Get oriented with our roundup of everything there is to know about patch 4.0.1 and how it changes the game until the launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

I'm on Vek'nilash!! Does Mat play on Vek?
rich Oct 12th 2010 2:06PM
From the looks of his character screen, no, not yet.
Mathew Oct 12th 2010 2:29PM
Vek is my "test" server for UI stuff.
Abhoth Oct 12th 2010 3:02PM
Time for you to make an actual toon over here. You know you want to. I'll take you around on my Touring Rocket anytime.
Master Chef Oct 12th 2010 3:49PM
Oh snap! I'm on Vek too. Are you horde? if so have I killed you yet?
Abhoth Oct 12th 2010 4:06PM
You probably have in Wintergrasp since the server is so horribly imbalanced in Alliance favor.

So long as I can get ArkInventory, Bartender, Grid, Clique, and Sell-O-Matic working, I'm golden.

@Johnnytorrance
Sorry man....SUF isn't being updated anymore :(
To repost what I posted in another comment here....
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but shadowed is no longer developing SUF. Someone has taken over the reins though to make simplistic unit frames (using original SUF code) but not everything is working yet (most notably raid and party frames).
I am still not sure what I am going to do. I love SUF but this may be the time to investigate other unit frames...

Grid + Clique are essential. I can't imagine playing without them.
Bartender... eh, maybe but I can cope. Auctioneer... I can be poor for a while. Bag mods are kind of important.
Beyond that, everything's more "ease of use" rather than "need for playing".

Sounds like a good time for a little spring-cleaning on the addons front. I do believe I have far too many. :|
Saeadame Oct 12th 2010 2:10PM
This. I have so many addons that I downloaded and then turned off because I didn't liek them or they didn't work... but I still have them haha.
Texicles Oct 12th 2010 2:11PM
Prior to getting a new computer, I was somewhere around 250 addons. Most were disabled, many were defunct, but I always updated all that I could, in case I wanted to dust one off or something. My interface folder was HUGE.
themann1086 Oct 12th 2010 3:28PM
Yup, I completely cleared my Interface and WTF folders. I did the same with 3.0.2, it's nice to remove addons you no longer use or are redundant.

I have accumulated far too many addons myself. My addon goal starting with patch 4.0.1 is to try to play with as few addons as possible.
A lot of new UI and other enhancements are being introduced, so I want to use the new standard features instead of relying on third-party mods. I'm getting rid of ALL addons for now. I will slowly, and one at a time, add mods as time goes on, only adding ones I really can't play without.
Alja Oct 12th 2010 4:13PM
I'm with ya on the too many addons thing! I did a little dance when I was able to delete pally power though :D Only other one that I felt I could easily get rid of was Rankwatch as it's no longer needed, I'm not sure what other ones I have that could be replaced my blizzards new UI features.
Kemikalkadet Oct 12th 2010 7:57PM
I did this when 3.0 came out. Just said screw it and deleted everything, started from scratch and built up a new UI. I took the opportunity to try some alternate addons i.e. Dominos instead of bartender and Itemrack instead of Outfitter. It's also a good opportunity to see what you can live without, in 3.0 i realised i could ditch GroupCalendar since blizz added their own version. There's probably a lot of similar things in 4.0, like the power auras thing can replace a lot of simple proc notifier addons (can't quite replace power auras for me though).

"If you are going to be raiding on Tuesday or Wednesday..."
Optimism. This post has it in spades.
:)
Saeadame Oct 12th 2010 2:09PM
I'll be in class for another 10 minutes, and I'm fairly relieved that my addon life won't be completely broken when I get home. Although I'm dreading seeing what's happened to bartender... if it's broken, I'll be really, really sad.
Moorit Oct 12th 2010 2:15PM
Pssst. The teacher can see that you aren't paying attention.
; )
Saeadame Oct 12th 2010 2:18PM
@Morrit - it's university, they don't care if you're paying ateentino or not, because it's your money you're throwing away =P.
Bye money... I'll miss you... ;_;
