Shifting Perspectives: Patch 4.0.1 for cat druids

Cats, in marked (and blessed) contrast to bears and resto, aren't changing a lot in patch 4.0.1 (barring a lingering DPS issue I'll talk about later), and the column I published earlier on the beta cat is still largely accurate if you want an ability-by-ability rundown on specific skills.
How do I spec?
Like everyone else, we don't have access to all the good stuff at level 80, but you can jerry-rig a serviceable spec out of the 36 talent points we do have. Alaron recently published a recommended spec of 0/33/3 at The Fluid Druid and I tend to agree with his (and Kalon's) assessment concerning the current state of feral talents. Their recommended specs differ only in talent point allocation between Stampede and Survival Instincts.
If your guild's still running content like heroic Icecrown Citadel or Halion post-4.0.1, I would pick up Survival Instincts just for the additional survivability. While healers won't really be getting the worst of mana efficiency changes at level 80, they'll still be getting a dose of it, and anything you can do to keep yourself alive is going to appreciated. Actually, the cat's array of self-healing options and access to tanking cooldowns is extremely good for just that, and we are definitely among the less-fragile DPS specs in Cataclysm heroics. Not that I've actually seen more than one or two cats in beta heroics anyway due to feral damage's ongoing inability to escape the toilet, but eh.
Frequently asked questions
What's my rotation going to be? The final "rotation" should be pretty similar to what we're doing right now. The only thing that's really changed is that you're not going to be anywhere near as punished in the inevitable moments where Savage Roar and Rip happen to drop off within seconds of each other. Right now you'd be reapplying Savage Roar and then getting Rip back up as quickly as possible, with an unavoidable DPS loss in the interim. Post-4.0.1, Rip is the more compelling priority, as Savage Roar buffs only white damage.
Near as I can work it out, this is what you're looking at:
- Feral Faerie Fire (unless your target already has an armor debuff).
- If you're Feral Charging the target (either at the beginning of a fight or rejoining one), Ravage.
- Savage Roar.
- Mangle (unless your target already has a bleed debuff).
- Rake.
- Shred to five combo points, then Rip.
- At this point, the standard cat DPS "rotation" should kick in until your target reaches 25 percent health. Assuming 2/2 Blood in the Water (thank you, Blizzard, for changing its name), you should substitute Ferocious Bite for Rip unless Rip has fallen off. In that case, reapply Rip and continue to substitute Ferocious Bite until and unless Rip falls off again (which it really should not).
- As always, time Berserk to coincide with a Mongoose and/or trinket proc. I'm not sure what's happening to the blood death knight's Hysteria.
A lot of feral commenters are gloomily waiting for a buff to come at level 85, because the odds of something being done to address this in the interim are not high. Unless Blizzard actually intends for cat DPS to fall relative to other specs', which is always possible but not something the developers have explicitly stated.
Uh, most of my gems are straight armor penetration. What's going to happen with that? They've converted to straight critical strike gems on both the beta and PTR. Blizzard may change this when the patch goes live, but regardless of the stat you'll find on your gear post-4.0.1, it ain't gonna be armor penetration.
What should I regem? We're losing Primal Precision, so depending on your gear it may be necessary to gem for expertise. After that, gem for agility.
Wait a minute. Isn't our four-piece tier 10 bonus worthless now? Well, the current version is, insofar as bleeds can now be critical strikes by default. The four-piece bonus has been changed to increase Rake's damage by 10 percent.
My head hurts. So does mine, friend. So does mine.
Glyphs
What glyphs should I use? For whatever reason, ferals are still up the proverbial creek when it comes to comprehensive glyph coverage. Whether you play a bear or cat, you're going to encounter a few "holes" in the new system that I assume Blizzard will address in a later patch or when Cataclysm goes live. I'd rather not have a repeat of the situation we had in early Wrath where the Burning Crusade-era Idol of Terror was still standard equipment for all bear tanks simply because there wasn't anything better. Assuming the new glyph system goes live, this is what you should look for:
Prime This is where the good stuff is: Savage Roar is much less compelling nowadays (to the point where I wonder what it's doing in the prime glyphs category), but it's still a DPS increase over Glyph of Berserk and Glyph of Tiger's Fury, as Alaron observes.
Major Sorry, folks; there's nothing really amazing here, but these are your options: If you've historically had problems incorporating Ferocious Bite into your rotation, I would glyph for that, but otherwise your other three options are entirely up to you. If you're a raiding cat who does a lot of Rebirthing, you may even want to pick up a Glyph of Rebirth. Having said that, Rebirth is back to being a 30 minute cooldown, so ... yeah.
Minor Druids' minor glyphs are still the same, so whatever you've picked up before should be fine.
Every week, Shifting Perspectives treks across Azeroth in pursuit of druidic truth, beauty and insight. Whether you're a bear, cat, moonkin, tree or stuck in caster form, we've got the skinny, from a look at the disappearance of the bear tank to thoughts on why you should be playing the class (or why not).Filed under: Druid, Analysis / Opinion, (Druid) Shifting Perspectives

The resto druid changes are so horrible that kitty DPS looks like a good thing to switch to.

Going oom is fun =D
But no really, if you're going to change specs, go boomkin and pick up the trinket from the frost vendor that has a ton of hit. Gem the rest of the way to the cap and change your name to shroomkin.

Gonna miss me my Arm Pen...
Disappointing to see our numbers drop. Hopefully things balance out when we hit 85.

I'm confident they will, but the damage loss is pretty irritating in the interim. Oh well -- the time between expansions is always a garden of earthly delights for some and a wasteland for others. Our turn for the latter came up.

And remember folks, /dontpanic
Gerr Oct 12th 2010 10:33AM
And always carry a towel!
Seriously though, I have disabled Recount and have changed my playstyle from dps to "backup". I dps in cat until the healer starts to panic with mana issues (which is happening a LOT now), then I throw a couple of HoTs on the tank, then it's to bear to pick up the adds. If you forget the damage meter and be the true hybrid that you are- do everything reasonably well- and play "backup" I think there is still a lot of fun to be had until our dps woes are fixed. :)
Oldbear Oct 12th 2010 12:24PM
@ Gerr - I've been playing that way since I rolled my druid. I came to the realization that I'll never out DPS my hunter or guildie mage; I'll never heal as well as our priest or shammies, and I can't tank as well as our death knight or pallies... But I can fill in DURING a fight for ANY of these rolls. Healer is OOM... throw a few HOTs on the tank and Innervate the healer or battle rez if I timed things wrong... Offtanking when needed... help with DPS...
Druids are the "Leatherman" of WOW. We have all sorts of tools to use, none of them are as good as the real tool - but you can still do just about anything with what we have...
Jorges Oct 12th 2010 1:49PM
@Oldbear:
Thats completely true, I love to fill the gaps on fights as a support class. I think we are the only real support class in the game.
But still, I want my damage back. It was fun to outdps hunters and mages :(
Eirik Oct 12th 2010 2:23PM
One of the reasons I can't see anyone going without the Master Shapeshifter talent. The whole point of the druid class IMO is flexibility.
Admittedly, if you're in the tanking role, it is VERY difficult to pop out for a quick heal or battle-rez, but if you're just OT, once the MT's critters go down and he picks up yours, it's Kitty-City!
I've only got a very few heals worth of mana in my kitty gear, but if ya need it, ya need it. And Innervate to prop up a panicking healer is always good.

@OldBear
Actually, I've rarely been lower than top 3 dps as feral in 25 mans, especially if I get Hysteria timed with berserk. Arpen was just that good for feral druids till yesterday. With this new thing Blizz is trying with druids though, giving us instant nature spells but no mana increases, I still don't think it will work. Since we have not a single point of int on our gear, and the cost of spells just jumped exponentially, it seems we'll be oom with two regrowths and a rejuv that don't even heal for that much. Savage roar only buffs white damage, mastery only buffs bleeds, haste buffs white damage and energy gain which buffs shred (bleeds should always be up) it will be a nightmare simming for the optimal balance between haste and mastery even worse than arpen ever was.

> so depending on your gear it may be necessary to gem for expertise. After that, gem for agility.
Is there a cap or number we should be aiming for on expertise before switching to agil?
hottlikeafoxx Oct 12th 2010 9:55AM
Are you not familiar with the expertise cap?
Docseuzz Oct 12th 2010 9:55AM
26 expertise on your character sheet = no dodges from behind....
Sterb Oct 12th 2010 9:59AM
Probably the standard melee 26.
I'm curious though, wouldn't it be better to gem for agility and reforge to achieve expertise cap?
Meatwadz Oct 12th 2010 10:34AM
No, you will need to reforge for mastery on every peice. it will increase your dps substantially. It will sill suck.. Just less.
Angus Oct 12th 2010 10:34AM
GEM for agility. REFORGE Expertise and hit.
Reason: primary stats(Agility) cannot be reforged and are more valuable now than secondary(expertise). So any spot you can get a primary, you should.
Any armor pen on your gear will be changed so 40% of that stat going towards the necessary caps is not a loss.
The time of secondary stats on gems is essentially gone now. Haste and mastery might be the only things better than or equal to a primary stat now.
Allison Robert Oct 12th 2010 12:29PM
Yup, the expertise cap you'll need to aim for is 26; assuming you're behind a boss (and you should be), this should push all dodges off their avoidance table.
Otherwise Angus is right, and I apologize -- for whatever reason I kept thinking reforging wouldn't make an appearance until 4.0.3. Gem for agility, reforge secondary stats til you're expertise/hit-capped, and after that ... I'm actually not sure whether haste or mastery would be better for most people in ICC gear at 80. My hazy experience on the beta was that mastery was better, but feral damage was still bugged while I looked at it and haste has only gotten better for well-geared ferals.

Does anyone have a good link for a Resto Spec? Or a Boomkin Spec?
