New Tree of Life model datamined
Boubouille at MMO-Champion has datamined the long-awaited new Tree of Life model from an upcoming beta build (click the image above for a high-res version), and commentary's already starting to fly on the forums. Some players are really enthusiastic, others are not (Cirocco of Rexxar's notable soundbite: "Hunchback of Notre Lame"), and others think it's a little too masculine-looking in comparison to the older treant model.
If the posture looks a little familiar, it's because the Tree apparently shares the male orc's skeleton and animations (at least for the moment), although I'm having difficulty locating the YouTube video that a player claims to have seen of this. The new model isn't yet live on the beta, so unfortunately I can't yet get a video for myself. EDIT: Thanks to our readers, it's been located -- go here.
I really like the new model, but I'm surprised that Blizzard thought it was a priority for an update given the Tree of Life's new status as a Metamorphosis-like cooldown. Bears and cats finally got their update in patch 3.2, so I'm hoping that Moonkin, Travel and Aquatic Form are next on the list. At any rate, it's a spot of good news (well, to me, anyway) in a patch where cat DPS has nose-dived, bears are going crazy trying to hold aggro in 5-mans, and trees are ... well, no longer trees. Past the cut you'll find a quick note on the WoW Insider team's take.
While I liked the form, reception was somewhat mixed behind the scenes here at WoW Insider --

- "Kinda like John Kerry cerca 1978."
- "More like a Kennedy than a Kerry."
- "The 1970s called (and) want their discotrees back."
- "A Tree of Life walks into a bar. The bartender says, 'Hey bud, why the long face?'"
- "A big rock with feathers piled on it."
- "Looks like a pagan hipster to me. It should have a Macbook under one arm and a soy latte in the other."
Mat McCurley also had an amazing John Kerry Photoshop job I'd love to add here, but he's not around at the moment.
So there you go, folks. What's your take on the new forms?

Well, I have to say that I for one hate these new forms. They are down-right ugly. The old ToL had a certain grace, and these just look like they are one branch away from going into a murderous rampage. Resto druids are supposed to be about healing and peace; I think this model strays too far away from that.

I agree. If Resto Druids were a melee class/spec, then it would fit, but this just doesn't fit on a caster, even if one finds it visually appealing. It's like putting a priest in plate, only far bulkier and more "I'm going to bash your head in with my fists!"

I still don't know what people are talking about when they call the model ugly. Just because you don't like it as much as the old one doesn't mean it's poorly made or ugly.
Also, though resto druids are supposed to be about peace and such, if you're on top of Icecrown Citadel's spire having an all-out battle for the fate of the entire world with the biggest baddy to date, you probably aren't thinking about how peaceful nature is. In fact, you're probably pretty pissed off. A druid chilling in Darnassus is very different than a druid that mounts attacks on the most dangerous places in Azeroth with 24 other people, and I think that this model fits that.
That said, the model is VERY masculine, and I can understand why people who play female characters have an issue with it.

Fugly.
I like the old ones way more.
And walking on little root feet was way cooler/cuter/funnier than a giant hunchback ogre looking thing with leg warmers and a way-too-long head sticking out of his chest.

I wish they were a little more androgynous. I mean, look at that beard. It's far from the first form to have that problem though, most of the cats definitely look male.
Which raises all kinds of crazy questions about how shapeshifting works. Questions best answers in fanfic.

Those look like the 'shrooms I consumed at a drum 'n base party years ago...
...well, least they looked like that afterwards. O.O

Is the video of the datamined model. It has a user made texture as the official textures didn't exist intially.

ZOMG.
It's Sam Jackson.
Tirrimas Oct 13th 2010 6:25PM
This...makes my resto cowgirl cry.

Another comment lost in a sea of comments, but I have to go on record as a resto druid:
I don't like it.
If this is going to be the new look, I'll finally be thankful to not be in tree form all the time (which I miss currently). There was nothing wrong with the old tree form in my opinion. These models look more like the ancient protectors (which is cool), but they somehow... missed the mark. I don't know. It's hard to pinpoint what exactly I don't like about the look except that it looks very off.
I would muuuuch rather have an updated aquatic form. Maybe to something that's not grotesquely hideous? Maybe to something that's actually in the game?
lazymangaka Oct 13th 2010 6:50PM
Not being a druid, I can't speak much, but I can say that the way the old tree form danced always made me happy.
Dendaris Oct 14th 2010 10:36PM
The dance is awesome. I love getting out my Teldrassil Sproutling and dancing with it.
pwn3d Oct 13th 2010 6:34PM
I am going to call that the "resto fro".
matt Oct 13th 2010 6:41PM
Afro, Head-band, goatee, bulky frame... holy crap thats Ben Wallace
Matthew Oct 13th 2010 6:52PM
Trees were always 1970's flashbacks. Hello, did you not see their swinger medalion??
moxie Oct 13th 2010 7:10PM
The first thing I see when looking at the new models is a wooden goblin. I think it's the shape of the head and the angle that those shots are taken from.
Still though... I really like it. It's 1000x better than the old form. I might even dig out the resto tree on my druid. I just hope that they'll update boomkin soon!
Steph Oct 13th 2010 7:07PM
OMG they are ugly....I was planning on leveling a healing druid but after the sight of that I think I might not.
Yes I know...superficial but what can I say.
perderedeus Oct 13th 2010 7:19PM
We may be stuck with the orc skeleton. Think of when Garrosh was leaked, with a tauren skeleton... It hasn't changed.
Tony Romo Oct 13th 2010 7:25PM
Guys, it's our favorite old school painter, Bob Ross. And look, he's painting the ToL's natural habitat too.

I WANT MY TREE BACK. All I wanted was new leaf colors, and now we get a butt-uglier model that we only get to use for 30 seconds at a time.
