No, it's not just you. The pre-
Cataclysm patch 4.0.1 has indeed already begun turning the world upside down. Some caster DPS is far, far higher than it was a week ago, while melee DPS (especially DPSers who made heavy use of armor penetration) have seen significant shortfalls. Tanks are reporting threat issues across the board, as
Wrath heroics that they tanked with ludicrous ease a week ago are suddenly providing them with much more difficulty, especially on groups of mobs. It's the pre-expansion shift, and it's wreaking havoc with players who've grown accustomed to how their classes or specs have played since November 2008.
You're not alone. To try and put things into a nutshell:
- With elements of play like the new spirit-to-hit conversion and new talents and abilities, some casters are reporting greatly inflated DPS.
- Meanwhile, with the loss of stats like armor penetration and tinkering with buffs like Windfury, melee DPS of all stripes are reporting DPS losses. Some classes are reporting as much as a 50 to 60 percent drop. Some of this is probably due to suboptimal gem or gearing options. ArP's switching to crit like it did basically loaded up a lot of people with far more crit than they needed, as one example.
- Healing is in a weird place. Resto druids miss their forms, and across the board, heals are reported to be slightly less efficient -- but since no one's leveling past 80 yet, rating decay isn't crippling anyone.
- Tanks are reporting significant issues in trying to tank the current content with the new systems. AoE threat is greatly reduced for just about everyone, and learning new mechanics is causing some difficulty. For instance, if you spam Heroic Strike as a warrior tank now, you're doing it wrong. Armor has decreased in many cases, the loss of defense has cost tanks who relied on that stat some pure avoidance, and in general, the greatly inflated DPS of some casters has made keeping threat off of them extremely brutal.
Things are going to be up in the air for the next couple of months, more than likely. If your class got some of the ludicrous buffs, congrats on god mode until
Cataclysm. If you instead suffered for the changes, my condolences; I do know how you feel. I really, really do. Whether we'll see adjustments before
Cataclysm itself or not is unknown, but unlikely, as the focus right now is most likely on making sure the expansion ships in a more balanced way.
This is it! Patch 4.0.1 begins the slide into December's upcoming expansion. It's a whole new game from here on out. Get oriented with our roundup of everything there is to know about patch 4.0.1 and how it changes the game until the launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

My casual guild finally reached the Lich King (normal - as I say casual guild) one week ago. We really wanted to get him down before Cataclysm. I think we can say bye bye to that if they don't buff melee and tanks...

I think that a good chunk of my dps loss on my fury warrior was due to not being able to see where half the mobs were, since their nameplates weren't showing up at all (yes, I turned enemy name plates on in interface options... still nada).
Try running AN or HoR, where you have blue and black mobs against a blue and black background, with dim lighting, and no names or nameplates to identify them. It is surprisingly hard to pick them out on the screen. I found myself tab-targeting madly, just trying to find the next enemy to attack.
I tried running around and killing things on my own, though, and I found myself really having a ton of fun with fury. Execute actually hit for a substantial amount, too! This I just cannot figure out. On my level 85 warrior, an execute with minimal rage hits for 1.5k (non-crit). An execute with 100 rage hits for about 6400, non-crit. On live now, my level 80 warrior's non-crit executes were weighing in as high as 7500, and crits were coming in anywhere from 10k to almost 14k. How in the world does that work? Anyway, I'm not complaining. Not about Live, anyway.
I found that with 3/3 Blood Pact, 2/2 Field Dressing, and the Glyph of Bloody Healing, I was killing the Pustulent Horrors in Icecrown with 100% health left at the end... and they were dying *quickly*. So single-target dps at level 80 seems to be quite good, as long as you are getting hit. I can't vouch for PvE boss dps yet, as I've only run heroics so far.
However, I will say that I'm...cautiously optimistic. I'm very surprised at how much more fun I'm having on Live right now than I did leveling my warrior through 80 on Beta. This might turn out to be pretty good, after all.

I had the same problem on the PTR. You definitely need an add-on like Tidyplates, or something. Check it:

Mayhew Oct 13th 2010 6:32PM
You are the second person that I have seen mention this add-on. I will have to try it out. Thanks for the link!
Mayhew Oct 13th 2010 6:35PM
Whoops! That should be Blood Craze*, not Blood Pact. WTB Edit Button.
Sleutel Oct 13th 2010 7:00PM
I had the same nameplate problem on the PTR. Fortunately, I use Tidy Plates: Threat Plates on the live realms, so fingers crossed that that's not broken, too. (Especially with the new tanking mechanics and threat issues--more than ever, I need to be able to easily see what I do and don't have aggro on.)
clundgren Oct 13th 2010 7:14PM
I can report that threatplates is working. As are many other addons: kudos to the designers!

I can vouch for the crazy self-healing for the new fury. I haven't played much on Live since the patch (and it sounds like things are, perhaps, different than beta - which I find odd, since I thought we were beta was testing all these same changes that just went live) but I have leveled my fury warrior on beta, and it's crazy easy. I, literally, have NEVER stopped to use a bandage or eat in 3 levels! My health bar is almost always between 85 and 100% full, regardless of whether I'm fighting 1, 2, 3, or 4 mobs. It's like I'm invincible. I haven't even bothered to start leveling first aid on beta, which has always been a priority for leveling fury.
Perhaps we aren't nearly as potent in level 80 raids, but come Cata, we will be in leveling heaven.

This is a (relatively) small nitpick, but I'd still like to get some second opinions: what are everyone's thoughts on "Improved Arcane Explosion?" I like the theory behind it, but I don't think it works yet (ie, the global cooldown doesn't seem any shorter). Anyone else getting that?
brian Oct 13th 2010 6:42PM
Sadly, even with Improved Arcane Explosion it might be better to just use Blizzard. I'm not even talking about melee-range issues either.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=1449
vs.
http://www.wowhead.com/spell=10
Blizzard is 74% base mana over 8 seconds, which is basically 9.25% base mana every second.
Arcane Explosion is 18% base mana per cast, which is 12% base mana per second without the talent (as it's over 1.5 seconds), or 18% mana per second with the talent.
So Arcane Explosion is already much less efficient than Blizzard 12% vs 9.25%, but then the talent makes AE even less efficient. As Arcane depends highly on Mana Adept, I think you'd find it hard to get Arcane mages to AoE in general, much less use the more awkward, less efficient AoE spell. Even worse, AE's coefficient is about 1/5 of Blizzard's, which makes it likely that even the 25% damage from Arcane specialization won't make it better.
It could change, though, and I dearly hope it does. AoE is going to matter much less in Cataclysm, but having your subsequent single-target damage suffer because of needing to get rid of a wave of adds isn't very appetizing.

NGE.
Fact.

Don't even try to compare it to the Star Wars Galaxies' NGE update which removed and added classes.

I feel like every article now has the stupid Deathwing speech bubble meme. It was pretty funny first couple times, but it should really stop.
Drakkenfyre Oct 13th 2010 6:47PM
I agree.
Once or twice is fine. Every single time there is patch or expansion news is not.

Rob Oct 14th 2010 12:00AM
I'm not sure, you can never have too many Deathwing memes.
Rendia Oct 14th 2010 4:47AM
Can never have to many Deathwing memes you say? Well, you certainly are a barer wonderful news aren't you? Next you'll be telling me that The Defias Brotherhood is rising again.

and this is why I said 'NO FREAKIN WAY' when my bro-in-law asked me to do a roic the instant I logged in today. I'm going to give myself a couple more days to get the hang of my abilities before trying to convince dpsers who are used to AoEing madly through Wrath that they need to slow down, and that I'm not a bad tank. >.>
Snuzzle Oct 13th 2010 6:26PM
It's really not so bad. The thing I found best was just to jump in and let them kick you if they must. At least for bears, pallies, and warriors I can hold AOE threat adequately (even with the nerf to Swipe and Conc) as long as someone isn't focus firing on something I'm not targeting. If they're AOEing and I'm AOEing, it's gravy.
