No, it's not just you. The pre-
Cataclysm patch 4.0.1 has indeed already begun turning the world upside down. Some caster DPS is far, far higher than it was a week ago, while melee DPS (especially DPSers who made heavy use of armor penetration) have seen significant shortfalls. Tanks are reporting threat issues across the board, as
Wrath heroics that they tanked with ludicrous ease a week ago are suddenly providing them with much more difficulty, especially on groups of mobs. It's the pre-expansion shift, and it's wreaking havoc with players who've grown accustomed to how their classes or specs have played since November 2008.
You're not alone. To try and put things into a nutshell:
- With elements of play like the new spirit-to-hit conversion and new talents and abilities, some casters are reporting greatly inflated DPS.
- Meanwhile, with the loss of stats like armor penetration and tinkering with buffs like Windfury, melee DPS of all stripes are reporting DPS losses. Some classes are reporting as much as a 50 to 60 percent drop. Some of this is probably due to suboptimal gem or gearing options. ArP's switching to crit like it did basically loaded up a lot of people with far more crit than they needed, as one example.
- Healing is in a weird place. Resto druids miss their forms, and across the board, heals are reported to be slightly less efficient -- but since no one's leveling past 80 yet, rating decay isn't crippling anyone.
- Tanks are reporting significant issues in trying to tank the current content with the new systems. AoE threat is greatly reduced for just about everyone, and learning new mechanics is causing some difficulty. For instance, if you spam Heroic Strike as a warrior tank now, you're doing it wrong. Armor has decreased in many cases, the loss of defense has cost tanks who relied on that stat some pure avoidance, and in general, the greatly inflated DPS of some casters has made keeping threat off of them extremely brutal.
Things are going to be up in the air for the next couple of months, more than likely. If your class got some of the ludicrous buffs, congrats on god mode until
Cataclysm. If you instead suffered for the changes, my condolences; I do know how you feel. I really, really do. Whether we'll see adjustments before
Cataclysm itself or not is unknown, but unlikely, as the focus right now is most likely on making sure the expansion ships in a more balanced way.
This is it! Patch 4.0.1 begins the slide into December's upcoming expansion. It's a whole new game from here on out. Get oriented with our roundup of everything there is to know about patch 4.0.1 and how it changes the game until the launch of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

Aww ... the players are going to have to actually think their way thru a fight for a change. Maybe even ... Dare I say it ... ask for help with some CC!! ... How terrible!
Seriously though ... this is the time to get back into the swing of things with the crowd control mechanics. Get used to it now so I won't be a nightmare when the expansion drops. We DPS'ers need to learn some constraint as well. Just because you can max out the meters ... doesn't mean you have to if you are going to cause a wipe.

It's like my worst nightmare, boomkins running round WSG 2 shotting everything - The Chickens are coming for us all!

I can't even bring myself to raid on my feral now. Granted I was getting burned out with raiding on him already, but with feral DPS reduced by 40%-50%, I just don't feel like bothering until it gets fixed. It would just be too depressing to go from one of the top DPS in my guild to being near the bottom.
But I suppose with god-mode casters, nows a good time to level one =/
Jorges Oct 13th 2010 7:13PM
I feel just the same. I don't have the slightest interest on raiding like this. I'm better off playing Mass Effect 2 until Cataclysm hits.
If only I could "pause" my account time =/

You don't see Turkeys getting excited for thanksgiving, either.
Do you really expect anyone to say "it's not fair that my DPS is awesome, please nerf me"?
Agebur Oct 13th 2010 6:52PM
Warrior Tanks nerfed beyond what even for a pre-patch is normal. Druid I had learned Bear at lvl 10 now I'm 14 have to go and PAY to learn CAT because the idiots took Bear off me. Mark of the Wild now a lvl 30 spell - a joke. And Glyphs well lets just say Blizz really know how to mess up they are past masters. Less than half the Glyphs were relevant to my Prot Warrior because of the Talents they removed what on earth is the point of Prime Inscriptions - none. Lastly no cross server random Instances whats that all about? This is going back to Pre-BC nonsense from them. If there are howls now there will be outrage when Cata comes out.

8k ice lance is nice.
27k Arcane Blast is nicer.
That was in Old Kingdom, on my mage who I've only just specced to Arcane for the first time ever, who's wearing full T9.
There's no way that can be right! o_O

I for one love these changes. I was running a couple heroics, and nearly lost the tank a couple times. Though thats probably me getting used to my new spells. But still I like the fact if I don't watch what I'm doing the tank dies its great!!
On the other hand. Anyone know a good addon similar to Vuhdo? Or at least the Holy pallies "best" spells, I'm think Holy Shock, Word of Glory and..well not really sure on the third.
Alja Oct 13th 2010 7:01PM
vuhdo works fine, so why are you trying to replace it? o.0

My Death Knight's DPS increased by around 1000, I don't know if this is strange for my class and spec (was 54/0/17 pre-4.0.1, and I'm now Unholy). Of course this sudden increase combined with the adjustments facing tanks all over means I'm pulling more aggro than I used to.
Jaq Oct 13th 2010 9:28PM
My DPS on my Unholy DK went up 2K on the dummies, with Death Coil and Festering Strike hitting very hard. The transformed ghoul hits like a truck on steroids. Unholy DKs at least aren't suffering under the new patch, but yeah, we got massive threat issues now.

Oh god, it stinks. T_T

PvE dps went down for ret, as for most other melee dps, due in large part to gear changes and loss of easy AoE. But I'm far, far more concerned about the current state of PvP, which is appallingly unbalanced. Plate classes are getting kited and lit up like cheap fireworks on the 4th of July. Essentially, if you wear plate you should just stay away from the BGs for the next few months.
clundgren Oct 13th 2010 7:23PM
Yeah, I got ONE SHOT, with almost 1100 resilience, by a warlock. Super fun. Getting 2-3 shot by casters is routine. And hunters are now basically uncatchable. So I'm just plodding about, doing the best I can, and trying to keep faith that 85 will make it all better.
The thing with PvP is that it's so out of whack that it's become kinda funny. I mean, what are you gonna do when a warlock crits you for 35k damage? It's not like he outplayed you.
uncaringbear Oct 13th 2010 7:27PM
Now we settle in for several months of 'real' beta testing for Blizzard.

Bingo bango. We have a winner.
Manadar Oct 14th 2010 6:40AM
It's funny how they say that they didn't see this coming on internal tests and PTR when normal players have complained about it for months.
I for one find it sad that I do less DPS with my feral spec, with an avg. ilvl of 280, then with my new boomkin spec using resto gear and feral trinkets. And I've never even played a caster!
Siaperas Oct 13th 2010 7:30PM
Yeah, it's definately interesting right now. Ran Heroic CoS last night on my warrior tank. Thunderclap threat "seemed" a little low, but I would have to play with it a bit more to find out. I think more information on the threat generation would be interesting, and I'd appreciate if anybody had some numbers I could look at to compare.
I had to pop two major cool downs in the gauntlet, which I haven't had to do in a whle in my ICC gear, but that could be because the healer was still getting use to his spells too. Melee dps rarely pulled off me, but the arcane mage did frequently. I don't think I've seen that this expansion.
Overall, I don't think I've had that much of a challenge in Heroic CoS, even when I was initially gearing my warrior for Naxx. Warrior tanks, watch your shout cool downs for the dragon spawns, I found that I was a bit rage starved and wishing I had berserker rage back, but that's an L2P issue with the new spells. Anyway, these are my observations after running only one heroic last night. I haven't even touched playing fury, but I have to re-gem everything over on that side. These are just obersvations, and limited ones I might add, for anybody who may find them helpful.
Cheeselandman Oct 14th 2010 9:50AM
TC's aggro is low. I ran ICC 10 last night, and single target and multi-target have been nerfed. The inability to spam heroic strike has hurt our single target aggro, making things more interesting on some boss fights.
Believe it or not, but between Shockwave and rend+TC, warriors are now the best AoE tanks at the moment. I also agree that rage is a little...odd, but thats just something I need to get used to.
So far the "worst" thing about this patch is seeing a prot pally- in full tanking gear- pull 9k dps on festergut. I kid you not, it was pretty insane.
