Are those 4.0.1 spells shiny enough for you?

The dust of patch 4.0.1 is not settled and won't be for some time if Deathwing has anything to do with it, but now we start to see the shape of things to come. I've had a chance to settle into the new abilities. I've annoyed more than a few fishers with my Earthquake. I've gleefully retrained my fingers to become reactive, in order to enjoy the full benefits of Fulmination and Lava Surge. My guildmates tell me I am too happy about Totemic Wrath and Rolling Thunder. Good times, all in all. However, I am still a grumpy shaman. I am mostly happy with the new spells, but the effects feel like an afterthought.
The shadow over my happiness is all to do with eye candy. I love Earthquake, but it looks unfinished. The spell has a lovely rumbling sound, but the actual animation stands accused of impersonating a pancake! The satisfactory crack and elegant visual of Chain Lightning has been replaced in the elemental rotation by an invisible Fulmination combined with an uninspiring Earth Shock. Do you know what the audio-visual feedback from an Earth Shock is? Nowt, nada, zilch. My fabulous new ability ends with a disappointing fizzle. We are stormcallers! Spiritwalkers! Masters of fire and thunder! Fulmination has a big DPS impact, as my fellow elemental shaman will well know by now, and yet half the time, I've no idea whether my cast actually queued at all. Combine that with the new ability queue issues and you have a recipe for frustration.
A fix for the ability queue is coming in Cataclysm, but to further compound the lack of effects, Blizzard hasn't coded any spell alerts for some classes. There are minor spell effects for Flame Shock and Earth Shock, but while I am comfortable with my new rotation, I am missing the gratification. Chain Lightning was the maple syrup on my pancake, and now I am going without. Do not deny me my candy, developers!
Now, I am well aware that we are not the only class that is feeling a little shortchanged in the effects department. How are you finding the new spells for you class of choice and their accompanying effects? Are you enjoying the built-in spell alerts? Did you replace them with custom Power Auras? What about the spells themselves -- are they satisfying to cast and use?

I've been missing my Power Auras, actually - it doesn't seem to play nice with 4.0.1. When I tried to load it it stalled me forever at the loading screen.

Works fine for me, oddly enough.

I had this problem as well. There's a new version of PowerAuras out that fixes that specific problem. It's still not fully updated to 4.0.1, but at least it's usable. If I recall right, however, I couldn't find it on Curse. Try WowAce, or WowInterface.

Map sure you're using Power Auras S or W release :)

*hugs the crying shaman*

Seeing as there's a lot to look for with our rotation, I had to cook up something with power auras (addon). I'd probably turn off the Blizzard ones anyway.

Any chance you could share this? :)

The LS counter is AWESOME, you are a power auras ninja. Could you post the export of that thing, I had no idea anything like that was even possible with PAC.
vanye111 Oct 15th 2010 9:14AM
The Lightning Shield counter is awesome. For the rest, I personally prefer to use the spell pics themselves. Saves a lot of "What does the flaming skull of blue death mean again" if I haven't played a given character in a while.

I'll post the export when I get home from work tonight.

Here's the export for PAC 3.0.0W. The flame shock duration timer doesn't quite work right, but I can't figure out why.

I didn't even know they HAD introduced a bunch of new looks for spells until I read this article. But I play a hunter. Not only do we not have any new skills, we've lost what was probably our most impressive looking one, Volley.
Bluemain Oct 14th 2010 9:44PM
Those shaman effects do seem a little flat, but be gratefull your not a hunter, our most dazzling effect is cobra shot, which looks like your attacking the target with a sock puppet.
oooh the scary snakes gonna getcha!
themightysven Oct 14th 2010 11:10PM
I would actually be pretty scared if someone was shooting sock puppets at me

I guess we are in the minority but my guild and I are in love with Earthquake.
Earlgrey Oct 15th 2010 11:04AM
I was happy to spot someone who felt the same. First thing I caught when I logged on post-patch was a Shaman channeling Earthquake over and over in Dal. Looked fantastic as far as I was concerned - actual moving shapes as opposed to flashy bits - it's very corporeal looking. I like it.
As for the comments about blue heals for Shaman, I'm all for it. I'd love more distinguishing features to spells and the very green look to the druid heals on my main would contrast really well to blue heals from Shaman. I wonder if Priests and Paladins feel similar, though I suppose they both use the Light, so it makes sense.
Now I'm raiding tonight and looking forward to convincing my guild to stand in the green glowing circle that is efflorescence. Years of learning to run out of stuff that appears on the floor is going to be hard to shake for just a single spell. That one looks cool as well, but I know it's going to throw some people off.

Man, this is too true. If the Fulmination proc did some sort of tornado thing, or made Earth Shock more visually impressive or gave it some sort of FWOOSH noise. But... nothing. Earthquake could look a whole lot cooler; the most obvious change would be to make it a not-perfect circle. Hopefully they make some changes.
