Are those 4.0.1 spells shiny enough for you?

The dust of patch 4.0.1 is not settled and won't be for some time if Deathwing has anything to do with it, but now we start to see the shape of things to come. I've had a chance to settle into the new abilities. I've annoyed more than a few fishers with my Earthquake. I've gleefully retrained my fingers to become reactive, in order to enjoy the full benefits of Fulmination and Lava Surge. My guildmates tell me I am too happy about Totemic Wrath and Rolling Thunder. Good times, all in all. However, I am still a grumpy shaman. I am mostly happy with the new spells, but the effects feel like an afterthought.
The shadow over my happiness is all to do with eye candy. I love Earthquake, but it looks unfinished. The spell has a lovely rumbling sound, but the actual animation stands accused of impersonating a pancake! The satisfactory crack and elegant visual of Chain Lightning has been replaced in the elemental rotation by an invisible Fulmination combined with an uninspiring Earth Shock. Do you know what the audio-visual feedback from an Earth Shock is? Nowt, nada, zilch. My fabulous new ability ends with a disappointing fizzle. We are stormcallers! Spiritwalkers! Masters of fire and thunder! Fulmination has a big DPS impact, as my fellow elemental shaman will well know by now, and yet half the time, I've no idea whether my cast actually queued at all. Combine that with the new ability queue issues and you have a recipe for frustration.
A fix for the ability queue is coming in Cataclysm, but to further compound the lack of effects, Blizzard hasn't coded any spell alerts for some classes. There are minor spell effects for Flame Shock and Earth Shock, but while I am comfortable with my new rotation, I am missing the gratification. Chain Lightning was the maple syrup on my pancake, and now I am going without. Do not deny me my candy, developers!
Now, I am well aware that we are not the only class that is feeling a little shortchanged in the effects department. How are you finding the new spells for you class of choice and their accompanying effects? Are you enjoying the built-in spell alerts? Did you replace them with custom Power Auras? What about the spells themselves -- are they satisfying to cast and use?

I'm no elitist, but that was painful to read.

the new sound doesn't proc with fulmination?
If that's so i think it's a bug, because it procs with static shock, and it sounds awsome there, when they replace or add to the crash sound from earth shock will really add to the effects.
also the new sound efect sounds like a spark hitting, perfect for fulmination and static shock, but quite unsatisfactory for lightning bolt and lighting chain where the old sound played much better.

I haven't noticed any fulmination sound in particular - I was talking more about the graphical look of the spell ;) And also asking other classes about their spells - I feel very sorry for hunters right now!

It's currently "BZZT" and it's gone.
It used to be "ZAP! Kshkshkshkshkshkshkzzzzt".
: (
Sure, it was more... um.... non-pretty, but it had POWER. When I'm launching lightning from my hands, I don't want it to sound clean. No. I want it to EXPLODE through the air, and burn the poor mo'fo with sheer awesomeness.

Errrr.... Wrong comment thing.

Please for the love of god no more earthquakes. tweak it so it's similar to a DnD ground effect but not this polybouncing crap that it currently is. It is so fun trying to tank when that thing drops I'm starting to miss smaller adds.

Shiny? Oh yes, spells are shiny enough for me. I love the shiny.
My recipe for shiny?
- Two Priests;
- One Holy, one Discipline;
- CHAKRA!;
- Holy Priest gets his Prayer of Healing Chakra on;
- Holy Word: Sanctuary is placed on the ground;
- Discipline Priest adds Power Word: Barrier;
- Both Priests go wild with their other heals.
The shiny? Epic. The possible eye/brain damage because of OMG BRIGHT? Epic.

Paladins? I haven't seen any new effects.. I'll do a list of abilities:
Word of Glory: Uses the old Perception sound and standard priest heal animation.
Flash of Light: Uses another priest animation. Standard sound.
Divine Light: Uses the old Blessing of Might animation and sound.
Hammer of the Righteous: Has no animation. Old sound.
Templar's verdict: New sound, standard attack animation with no effects that I can see.
Ardent Defender: No animation or sound at all.

Holy Pally's "sprinklin' o' pixie-dust" on every spell has always been a touch at odds with the amount of love such pixie dust grants, but now we have "the human torch" which I'm actually a touch embarrassed to use (in contrast, I always chain-heal with pride on my Shammy), and no matter how many stacks of Holy Power I use on Word of Glory it always seems to do, well, nothing at all. The only note I get that it has successfully cast is me striking a pose and a little green bar getting just a little bit bigger. Hardly the stuff of legend. Even Holy Radiance only has the pally glowing. A bit.
In fact, things are so average that a YouTube video entitled "Cataclysm: New Holy Paladin Spells" spends more time looking at the new water effects than it does the new spell animations! I mean, huh?! Wuh?!
Ugh. WTB nice glowing floors, big shiny domes of light, shafts of pure lightning, wings of love, grips of life, something, ANYTHING other than more teeny tiny dots of pixie dust. /sadface

My warrior brothers, don't complain about our spell animations! We get to throw two-handed weapons like boomerangs, we get Bladestorm, we get Thunder Clap, we get Shockwave, we get Epileptic Sword Devastate and at level 85 we're gonna get HEROIC LEAP! What could possibly look more awesome than leaping 30 yards through the air in FULL PLATE ARMOR and stomping someone's face in a red explosion of thunder with a satisfying CRRRUSHZLZL sound to it?

We're ~all~ sparkly ponies now.

Chain lightning seems like it would make more sense as the trigger for all those built up lightning shield charges. Using a Earth shock doesnt jive. I guess its blizzards way of trying to include that spell. They should change it to chain lightning...or change earth shock to Lightning shock or something. just spit ballin' here. any other ideas?

I tank occassionally and I hate the intensity of player spell effects, the only way to fix it currently is to turn down the particle density settings of the graphics to a low setting but then yo lose some ground effects that you invariably need to move out of.
It also adds to game lag which is bad unless you're on a high end gaming rig.
The solution I would implement is to have the spell effects of your character in high definition and those of others as low res. Uncle Blizz, please make it so.

I'm really not trying to be rude, but can we get a post about the actual changes and mechanics on the class now? The shadow priest one from the other day was incredible, give us one like that. It seems almost pointless to write a whole article about how you are disappointed with spell effects.
Sarah Nichol Oct 15th 2010 9:39AM
This is just a one-off grouch post, but there was a full post on 4.0.1 three weeks ago now, and I'll be following up next Thursday with a full TT:Elemental edition ;) Feel free to email me with any further questions or things you'd like to see covered in Totem Talk: Elemental ;)

Oh, just stop! Seriously, this article could have been written by every class columnist here: "Mages got a Mortal Strike, but my druid just got a new Shapeshift..."
"Rogues got Seal of Douchebaggery, but my Warrior just got a crappy Resurrection"
"Bards got Song of Valor, but my Runemaster just got a new tattoo..."
Every class got a lot of positive changes. Just because it doesn't fit with your vision of what it should be doesn't mean it is wrong.
Don't perpetuate the carping and whining from all of the wannabe game designers out there by contributing to it!

I love my new cake, its just nitpicking :)
Sure its fancy to see your lighning is "chaining" but in pvp anytime i use a chainthing its a clear HERES-A-SHAMAN-KILL-ME sign. Chainheal gets even more attention. I just want to say i dont feel unhappy with my shocks minimal effects. If you want to live long dont draw attention :)
Lupidius Oct 15th 2010 3:00PM
Thanks for the reply!
Sorry for the somewhat rude way I put that, I really did think the article was worth the read. Looking forward to it :P

why did blizzard take away the new lightning bolt sound?
