Ghostcrawler: Round 1 of patch 4.0.1 class rebalancing implemented

WoW Insider's own Matt Rossi had a terrific post yesterday about the class balancing issues that we were seeing with patch 4.0.1. Casters like me were experiencing the thrill of god mode, with reports of mages being able to one-shot their opponents. And while we casters were getting sweet, delicious ponies, melee players got a big pile of pony excrement. Arms and fury DPS were down -- way down. So was retribution paladin and kitty DPS.
Last night, Lead Systems Designer Ghostcrawler let us all know that fixes were on the way. Today, he confirmed that fixes were implemented and explained what was done to each affected class to balance them out. The full post explaining who got buffed, who got nerfed and why is available just after the break.
Class balance as of Oct 13, 2010We made many changes yesterday. A lot of these were bug fixes, and many bug fixes will affect damage one way or the other. So just because you don't see a specific change referenced below, doesn't mean it didn't change.
With that said, here are the specific changes we made in reference to my previous post:
1) We buffed the base points and coefficients of many warrior dps abilities. We didn't do as much to tanking abilities.
We buffed the base points and coefficients of many Ret abilities.
We buffed the base points and coefficients of many Feral cat abilities.
2) We lowered the base points and coefficients of many mage abilities, but lowered Fire more than the other two.
3) We nerfed Shadow Word: Death, but it is possible we didn't nerf it enough. It should not be Shadow's biggest spell.
4) We returned Searing Pain's damage to its 3.3.5 levels.
5) We increased the benefit of resilience by 50% for players level 80 and below. The tooltips will probably not reflect this change.
We don't have any other changes to announce at this time. I am reluctant to mention additional classes or specs that we are looking at currently for fear of instilling excitement or panic.

Good, the improvements to my DK weren't adjusted. I finally feel like I'm powerful.
droknar Oct 14th 2010 3:12PM
What spec? My dps dropped by 900 when I had to change from Blood 2H dps to Frost 2H dps. I'm sure it's partly just needing to start understanding the new priority-based rotation, but I hardly feel powerful.

Unholy. I've got a 2H DPS spec saved for Frost, though I don't know how good it is (My OffSpec is Blood tanking), so if you want to take a look at it, I'd be happy to share it.

Frost at the start of the patch had a bug where Icy Talons increased rune generation cd by 10%, effectively giving you 10% less runes to work with. I don't know if it has been fixed, but that was the source of your low DPS, on top of being fresh.

I'm having enough trouble just trying to *learn* frost. >.

The new blood tank is amazing, and while I havent set up my offspec yet, been busy regemming and glyphing my tank, a guildmate who is unholy is doing amazing numbers in 4pc t10. I would like to ask Droknar if he is using unholy presence as it is my understanding, that the theorycrafting is showing that is required to see the benifit of 2h frost dps, otherwise you want to dual wield frost.

Frost DW DPS is absolutely, positively insane. Stack a little haste and you feel like you're ripping the world apart. I haven't got to try Frost 2H or Unholy yet, but I hear Unholy is about as beastly as it gets for melee classes right now. (Pun fully intended, LOVE the new pet mechanics.)
Justin Oct 14th 2010 3:40PM
Droknar, another thing I didn't think about is that it feels very much like Blizzard is pushing for Frost to be DW and Unholy for 2H. As was stated in the other replies, if you're not Frost 2Hing in Unholy presence, you're not really getting as much benefit as you could.
And yes, Unholy 2H Melee is RIDICULOUS. And fun. 4300 multi-target DPS is low for me now, and I'm not even in full T10.

We were worried our fury warrior was going to slit his wrists, so this is a welcome change. D:

frost 2h dps is WAY behind 1h frost dps at the moment... obliterate hits like a truck with both weapons in 1h and it hits like a paper airplane in 2h
Mr. Tastix Oct 14th 2010 5:34PM
2H Frost is, to be honest, pretty crap. Another problem with DW Frost currently is the fact that the off-hand damage of Obliterate is currently bugged.
Butts Oct 14th 2010 5:58PM
@Xylaria I'd like to know exactly what your secret is because I'm finding my dw frost dps in 4pct10 is way below. And the new way runes regen paralyzes me after every move. Are you rolling frost presence or unholy for the extra haste?
Shiro_Shishi Oct 14th 2010 6:44PM
I'm Unholy spec right now AND I AM HAVING SO MUCH FUN.
Unholy rules.
Ed Ross Oct 14th 2010 7:04PM
I disagree about the "negativity" towards Frost 2H. I getting very good results with 2H, more or less in the same level as DW. (Yes I am. Since the beta started there are people claiming "2H Frost sucks" or "2H Frost is great" I say "2H is pretty viable / competitive").
Plus there's always something to press, since I'm swimming in Runic Power and whenever runes aren't available at all I go with Frost Strike.
Plus number 2, I enjoy more 2H, and I'm having a lot of fun. :)

Add another +1 to the "Unholy DK is awesome" pile. I respecced from Blood DPS/Frost Tank to Blood Tank/Unholy DPS (keeping my 2-hander), and was immediately struck by "holy flounder what have I been missing out on all this time?"
DeathPaladin Oct 14th 2010 8:22PM
"obliterate hits like a truck with both weapons in 1h and it hits like a paper airplane in 2h"
I didn't realize that paper airplanes could crit for over 17k. In Unholy Presence.
Frost strikes me as fairly gear-dependent so far, though the spec is still new to me so I have nothing to back it up.
Amaxe Oct 15th 2010 12:57AM
I had to switch to dual wield (Unholy spec with 5 points in frost) to improve damage runic power and procs
leonardocelso Oct 15th 2010 10:13AM
*jumps in the Unholy rules bandwagon*
The good news is that in a 10 man ICC last night I was doing 13k on heroic Saurfang (pretty much live action dummy target). While being in unholy presence and with a lot of haste was *intense*, it felt like a lot of fun.
...The bad news is that I still managed to get owned by our resident lock doing 15k dps >.<
Damn clothies! *shakes fist*
