My wife and I have played together for years. But the past few months, the game lost some of its luster for her. She just wasn't feeling it, and as a result, she let it go on the back burner. So this morning, when I woke up and walked downstairs, the last thing I expected was to see her avidly taming new pets in Sholazar Basin. But there she was, relearning the hunter class, exploring the new pet management system, saying things like, "Oh, right, I forgot that's how shooting works now," and basically loving the game for the first time in months and months.
And we haven't even gotten the new content yet.
For someone like me, change can be kind of scary, because I'm comfortably used to how things are working. Drastic changes that push me out of my comfort zone and force me to relearn things can be intimidating. Therefore, I sometimes forget that such changes can also be liberating. In effect, you end up playing a substantially new class, and get that sense of discovery back that we all had the first time we played the game.
So, with my wife's example in mind, I ask: Have you come back or given
WoW a new look because of the changes in
patch 4.0.1?

Yes, I wanted to wait for 4.0.3 but then I decided "One month won't hurt, just to check it out", but then I noticed the tiny details: Thrall and Hellscream talking in the Throne room, the Earthquakes, the new technical details... I'm back in WoW...

This.
Although the graphical, UI and loading disconnects are most vexing.

lol same here. I saw the patch and thought "the real content comes in 4.0.3? i'll just wait till then..." then 10 minutes later i resubbed and was in wow. I originally quit to play SC2 but have been looking for a game to play in between the very stressful games of SC2, i think wow was that game all along.

I stopped playing several months ago because I was just worn out from my guild running the first 6 bosses of ICC10, then hitting a wall, week after week after week. Even with the 30% buff, we still couldn't progress any further. I just got burned out from trying and failing.
I was planning to come back when the new expansion comes out, but after reading the way Blizzard shit all over protection paladins (my main), I'm not sure if I want to come back. Blizzard, if your plan was to dissuade people from playing paladins, mission accomplished, dickholes.

I love the changes. As for dumbing down i dont really get that. For one in cata they r bringing back cc. They are making aoe tanking harder. Im still trying to relearn tanking on my pally. I love how when people dont like something they call it noob or some other stupid comment like that. They dont give any reason why they think its been dumbed down either. The new trees actually give me a little choice. Before i had to read ej and other sites just to know what talents i had to take to raid. Now i can choose what i want. If anything they are making the game more fun especially for leveling alts. So i didnt come back to wow but thats because i never left. I just kept leveling alts.

Might turn you away when you find that Archavon Warders can hit you for 46k... :(
I'm facing ridiculously increased mob damage, and I've noticed that other DK tanks are getting hit retardedly hard. I'm all for change, but I don't like it when a mob hits me for 400% more than they used to.
Consider it QQ, I'd like to call it a concern. Anyone else notice that tanks are squishier as well?
Anaughtybear Oct 16th 2010 8:10AM
It actually might drive me away. I'm not a big fan of tard-mode.
Ricohardt Oct 16th 2010 8:22AM
I've never seen a comment blacked out so fast.
ScytheNoire Oct 16th 2010 8:27AM
That's because this site is full of fanbois who don't like anything negative being said about Blizzard. They are almost as brainwashed as those in the Cult of Apple.
MusedMoose Oct 16th 2010 8:43AM
I'm speaking only for myself here, but I only downvote comments when the poster is being a jerk or something like that. It doesn't bother me at all if someone says something negative about Blizzard, it's how they say it.
"I don't like (x) because of (y)" I have no problem with, and I might even upvote it if they make a good point, whether or not I agree. "OMFG BLIZZ SUCKS THEY $%ED UP THE GAME THEY SHOULD PAY US TO BETA TEST THIS POS!!!!1!!" posts? Yeah, I downvote those. All the time.

@Scythe
Yeah like the hundreds of comments that were in outright support of Blizzard on their decision to...
Remove Tree of Life form, introduction of Real-ID, Violet Protodrake no longer giving 310% speed (decision reversed), the (somewhat serious) balance issues that came with 4.0.1 right out on release, Blizzard reverting its decision for DK's to them now having one dedicated tanking tree, PvP balance, faction balance, removal of titles and mounts, Blizzard being unable to allow players to have a second WotLK orphan, announcement of worgens not having a racial mount, certain specs not being viable for PvE for almost the entire duration of WotLK, 'undeserved' nerfs, RNG on special items during limited time special events, removal of 'fun' mechanics (tameable worgen, constant attempts to remove Dartol's Rod from working beyond its intended duties), inability to control the cess pool that is the official WoW forums, blah blah blah blah.
I have never up rated a comment that I have found challenging Blizzards position or situation. Despite how well informed, constructive or how much sense it may make from a neutral standpoint.
Oh and the obligatory '/EndSarcast' is needed here.
The above aren't entirely my opinions of what I'm against. Just topics I have seen that have been discussed on here through comments that have had fair points brought up that sometimes have originally gone against my opinion or I didn't think to consider. I'm all for and enjoy constructive opposing / different opinions. Sweeping statements such as above, not so much.
In the end, I'm probably just feeding a troll.
carebear Oct 16th 2010 12:04PM
this patch gave my paly tank 2 rotations depending on if im trying to hold single target or aoe threat whereas before the patch i could almost hit any button i wanted and hold threat. so i guess whether or not this patch made the game easier as you imply is a matter of perspective
Kurash Oct 16th 2010 12:04PM
Regarding "tard-mode." I know you meant to point out that you think the game is dumbed down, but your phrasing only makes you seem dumbed down.
If you don't like the changes, that's fine: go ahead and cancel your subscription. The game is supposed to be fun; when it stops being fun, stop paying for it. I'd prefer if you don't spout off angry posts in the process, though.
Krz Oct 16th 2010 8:11AM
I resubbed before I knew when exactly 4.0.1 was coming, but I knew it had to be sooner or later.
Hell, it's about time for some changes!
lovejoy Oct 16th 2010 12:19PM
yeah change can be good at times but.......so much at once is alot to absord for some including myself. I have been playing wow since the early days with one toon a warrior. Sure I have made other toons and lev them up but my heart is with the warrior class. They took a pretty good hit as well as others with this new patch. We are knocked off the horse but must climb back in the saddle and continue to ride!!!
Deathnard Oct 16th 2010 8:11AM
YEP!
Pathdelamort Oct 16th 2010 8:17AM
Honestly -- with the nerfs -- I'm tempted to leave. Why kill warriors completely? Oh yes, because Blizzard has a lead designer "Fail"Crawler that cares nothing for warriors.
Thanks Douche-bag.
