Cataclysm Beta: Testing Halfus Wyrmbreaker in Bastion of Twilight

I don't have much in regards to the lore and stuff, but something about this boss tells me that he controls and restrains drakes (or wyrms).
Unfortunately, I didn't do much in the way of healing. The group I was with already had capable healers. When it comes to DPS, I can either play a retribution paladin or an elemental shaman. I haven't had a whole ton of experience experimenting with paladins and the new holy power mechanics yet, so I played it safe and offered up an elemental shaman instead.
If you're curious about my gear level, I copied over an elemental shaman loaded with heroic level blue items. I reforged, cut and enchanted as much of my gear as I could, once I got my UI to a somewhat playable level before the gates were opened up.

Just another face in the crowd
You guys wanted crowd control back during raids, right? Check out the amount of trash in this area.

All I know is that there is a dude back there who casts Dark Mending (and heals one of these bigger dudes). The trash got a whole lot more interesting. Seems the big dude with the spinning swords around him has a buff whereby damage that does not exceed 10,000 is automatically reduced to 1. I suppose that that is a form of DPS check, in place just to make sure everyone meets the minimum standard in order to get in.

Breaking the Wyrmbreaker
Once we cleared the trash, it was on to the Wyrmbreaker himself!

We squared off against him for several seconds before he popped open that cage behind him and unleashed some whelps. Normally, it wouldn't have been a problem and we'd just shrug them off. But when these whelps were active, damage done by players was reduced by 20 percent. We brought them on top of Halfus and started DPSing them down with multi-target and AoE spells. They went down without a fuss.
Halfus also has an annoying flying wyrm that hovers just out of reach behind the raid and periodically breathes fire on the raid. The healers handled that admirably. I can't remember, but he did shoot fireballs at individuals. It wasn't even noticeable.

Once he reached low health, he started spinning around and Whirlwinding the entire group. The tanks commented that there might have been a threat issue going on. It appears that even though they had full threat, he would randomly go after different players. We wiped on that attempt. On the shot after, the tank placed Vigilance on the off tank and continued to chain taunt during the Whirlwind phase, since it refreshes. That's probably a bug, though. I don't think it is intentional for tanks to be able to continuously chain taunt. It just negated the effects of Whirlwind.
Something new every week
Supposedly, every week there will be a different wyrm (or wyrms) for the off tank to take on. I don't know if that's true or not, but it is an interesting way to add variety to an encounter. Every week, the fundamentals of the boss mechanics will stay the same, but there will be a different wyrm for your off tank to pick up, thereby forcing the raid to react differently. Good way to keep things fresh longer, that's for sure.

As for what it was like to raid as an elemental shaman, it is rather a satisfying feeling to drop 40k+ Lava Burst crits. I know I missed a few crucial spells or procs here and there -- but c'mon, let's give ol' Matty some credit. I spent my entire raiding career as a healer and stepped in to dish out damage! Almost enough to make me consider re-rolling for the expansion.
Almost.
Special thanks to Blacksen and his crew from <Imperative> for allowing me the opportunity to see beta test the raiding content with them.

It's a-me, Mario! Very good!

Oh boy! I can't wait to click on that!!

The fight sounds pretty fun, but personally I can't wait to see the lore behind the dungeon and its bosses. Quests will probably show some, but sadly there are bosses that are basically unheard of (Putricide for one).
Seeing all the abilities are pretty fun too. First we get to see our new talents and abilities, and then all the new abilities for the bosses.

Thanks for the great review Matticus! It certainly was fun. I put my thoughts and some more pics up on my blog: http://mockropolis.tumblr.com
We unfortunately did not down him. I was sure our OT released the whelps and the Nether Scion, but I was really focused on heals at the time so I can't be certain. I just remember people calling it out on vent.

What an unfortunate name for a raid boss. I think it shall only be time before players start referring to him as "Half ---" Wyrmbreaker.
:(

anything beats lootship.

You mean that's not how it's pronounced?

"whereby damage that does not exceed 10,000 is automatically reduced to 1"
Doesn't bode well for us DoT users...
devilsei Oct 18th 2010 9:43PM
Aye, its rather unfair towards more DoT-based classes, which makes me question the mechanic rather than going "ooo cool". The last way you should be limiting damage is by enforcing an arbitrary limit on who can and can't damage it.
It could of been a scaling buff that increased over time, like the spawned npcs during the Gunship battle, or after every crit they take X% less damage, or something else besides "Anything less than 10k, you screwed".
Hell, they should of just put the limit at "9000" instead of 10k.

Keep in mind that it's just trash. Boss fights wont have mechanics that are so unforgiving to a particular spec. If it really becomes an issue you can always keep yourself busy by focusing on keeping things locked down with CC.
Hahahaha Oct 19th 2010 12:59AM
I remember going into blood wing for the first time. Healers and DPSers are following tanks casually and since it's wrath without any warning the Prot warrior and Bear druid charges, Prot paladin uses avengers shield and we hear a ear splitting "NOOOOOOO!" from our raid leader. Had a heck of a laugh while running back. :D
sherekhan88 Oct 19th 2010 7:30AM
It seems that the burst classes would be taking him down primarily, while the DoT users are focusing on the other trash as well as CCing (like in regards to Locks, DoT and Fears galore!)

"All incoming damage reduced to 1. Damage in excess of 10000 cannot be reduced"
I love this, they seem to consistently come up with new and interesting mechanics to test DPS and raid awareness.
Also things like the 20% damage debuff when whelps are out is cool too. It actively 'forces' people who want to do top DPS by standing still and going all out on a single target to actually switch it up.
You can always tell a fight that has great mechanics implemented, they are the ones that people are still wiping on even after they completely outlevel the raid. A perfect example of this would be the twins in Sunwell, early in WotLK people going for the achievement would suffer wipe after wipe on those gals because they refused to follow the mechanics.
Now that we are so far into the xpac it's a little easier but I do wonder - and this is a question for anyone with experience - Will you EVER be able to faceroll H25 LK? I have seen the Paragon video and it just seems so preposterously complex that I cant imagine any amount of firepower (short of 1 shotting him in phase one) that would make that a puggable encounter.

Am I the only one who had a joyfull grinn on my face, when I saw what was the first thrash pull?
S.O. Oct 18th 2010 9:30PM
Nope, i laughed in glee for 5 minutes
mdumoulin.home Oct 18th 2010 10:49PM
i -- as a healer -- started to sweat the moment i saw what the trash looked like.
Sharten Oct 18th 2010 11:33PM
It made me jump for joy! I love stuff like this, it's so incredibly fun. Better than any AoE fest I've done. (Reminisces back to TK, SSC, etc.)
Alexa Oct 19th 2010 10:42AM
I'm so excited about trash you can't just AOE the crap out of! ;) As DPS, healer and sometimes-tank!
Naris Oct 19th 2010 1:00PM
If they nerf this trash (or anything in the raid) substantially I'll be pissed.
Having a pull like this in the first room is a perfect way to help weed out groups that wouldn't be able to finish more than a few bosses, QQ and drop leaving you stranded.
It is kind of annoying you can't polymorph them though...
