Headless Horseman pumpkin shrine crashes game

When the first players started doing the Headless Horseman event in hopes of Sinister Squashlings, they quickly noticed a rather harsh bug. There is about a 50/50 chance when mousing over the pumpkin to summon the Headless Horseman that the game client will lock up and/or disconnect you. Ever since patch 4.0.1 hit the live servers, there have been reports that world items that give the gear icon to let you know it is clickable have been causing a similar crash, and this is likely related to that.
One of the reasons this bug is especially hurting groups is that the people to usually click on the pumpkin are the tanks, who are then disconnected, leaving the groups to fend for themselves until they get back. As a precaution, have a DPSer be the one to click on the pumpkin and allow time to reconnect afterward so that the tank and healer can keep the rest of the group alive. If the fight is over by the time the DPSer gets back, the loot roll and bag of goodies should be ready and waiting.
Update: Orlyia (Blizzard customer service representative) posted a list of known issues and work-arounds for Hallow's End in the customer service forums. They've said that they're aware of the mouse-over issue and the developers are looking into what is causing it.

I think this is related to the fact that sometimes the bag will only contain jp and not any of the bonus items. As Jp don't appear as a lootable item like Emblems did the bag appears to be empty.

Ahh... Okay.
That makes sense. Disappointing, but it makes sense.
Would've expected something, at least.
I suppose I often only received badges in Brewfest, though.

Same issue in Eye of the Storm all weekend... clicking the flag leads to a lock up
Sean Oct 18th 2010 11:35AM
That's just Blizzard "Fixing" Eye of the Storm. If you try to cap the flag when your team has less than 3 towers, the game locks up. ;-)
Pyromelter Oct 18th 2010 3:10PM
nah, that's not fixing it. fixing it would be like this

I got disconnected every time I moused over the pumpkin until I followed the advice above and disabled Hardware Cursor. Now I can mouse over it just fine.
Thanks for the tip.

It doesn't matter who clicks the pumpkin, all you have to do is mouse over the pumpkin and boom, you get a lockup. It happened to my DK, and then it happened to my Rogue, but my Rogue didn't mouse over the pumpkin, she moused over a clump of kingsblood or gravemoss while I was in the instance.

I have had 15 attempts. Dcd on every one. Managed to log back in before the kill both times. 1 time my loot bag was empty. WTHeck, kind of option is that!?!? There should be something at least, right?
I switched my tank to dps because I couldn't touch the pumpkin. Then I couldn't mouse over the pumpkin. Sometimes just having the pumpkin on my screen was enough.
I'm on Cael, so maybe it's an oceanic thing, but this really stinks.
Hope Blizzard can get it fixed.
I even went to completely vanilla, Blizzard only interface, it's that darn pumpkin!!

I believe the empty bag is known as a "trick."
lolikitty Oct 18th 2010 9:35AM
The loot bag is not really empty, you'll have 24 justice points leap from it into your justice point panel. That's right, invisible leaping justice points, you heared me.

Last night at Occulus we went through 5 tanks who all "dc'd" trying to enter the instance. Is this just another type of the same problem. 4.0.1 certainly has made the game more challenging. We actually pulled off the random with 3 dps and I healer.

I've been having dcs zoning into oculus this weekend, but can click on mate tables, feasts, and portals just fine. It's weird.
Dok Oct 18th 2010 2:55PM
This happened to me too. Occulus portal worked for my shammy the first time then we wiped going for Ruby Void and I couldn't get past the stupid portal to the first boss and fly back. Occ seems very bad atm.

Now I get it! I tried dropping Great Feasts in a couple heroics this past weekend, and got DCed every time I did.
I was luckier on my tanks tonight when I did HH. Both times the game froze for about 5-10 seconds, then came back okay. When I ran it on my healer, our tank got DCed, but I was able to click it just fine to start the fight.
Weird.

The following is currently stickied in the "Bug Report Forum:" http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=27188062773
You will also find more general reports in the Bug Forum regarding the Headless Horseman event specifically, but the above link refers to the issue believed to be causing the crashes.

I did it on 2 different toons this morning with no crashes. And yes the points aren't lootable so you'll get that message. I saw that people in my group got the blade and the pumpkin helm..
midevildle Oct 18th 2010 9:28AM
It's every cogwheel cursor that can disconnect you, not just the Headless Horseman one.
Gregg Reece Oct 18th 2010 10:14AM
That would be why I mentioned that ever since 4.0.1 dropped there have been reports of that happening with all of the gear (or cog wheel) icon items and this is likely related.

The same thing happened to me this morning, but the Tank, and 2 DPS got crashed, So a disc priest and myself (fire mage) 2 manned it. (we both had around 5.8-6k gs, so no wonder) lol, it wasn't too bad. ;)
jfofla Oct 18th 2010 9:34AM
I had the same problem with the portal in Oculus.
Once I turned all my graphics to low, I could click it.
