The Queue: Countdown to BlizzCon edition

Welcome back to The Queue, our daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mathew McCurley will be your host today.
Some of my compatriots here at WoW Insider have already begun their long, difficult trek to BlizzCon. I, however, will be leaving early Thursday morning and powering my way to Anaheim. There is this happy disbelief right now because the convention is so close. Reality will probably hit me at 4 a.m. on Thursday, when I'm hating myself for early flights and starving at the airport. Let's answer some questions.
Babaloo asked:
When we go into The Burning Crusade/Wrath content, do we effectively go back in time? Seeing as events during those expansions are referenced in the new old world, how do they explain it?
Blizzard has come out and said that each expansion is its own little world that furthers the story of the whole and that continuity issues, while important, also don't make a ton of sense when dealing with game development. Bornokk shed some light on the issue in a post on the official forums. Some things will change to reflect certain gameplay changes or huge story issues, but for the most part, that content remains unchanged. You just have to have a healthy suspension of disbelief.
snowleopard233 asked:
Am I the only one who thinks the cinematic team was listening to Bat Out of Hell when they made the Cataclysm cinematic?
If they aren't listening to Meat Loaf constantly while designing every aspect of World of Warcraft, I'd be disappointed.
Piers asked:
Sorry if this has already been answered, but when does the actual Cataclysm take place (i.e., when will we see the changes in the landscape)? As I understand it, you don't have to buy the expansion to get the experience, so when will Azeroth fall apart? I was kind of expecting it in 4.0.1, but that seems not to be the case.
Patch 4.0.3, the final final patch before the actual release of the game, will change the world, introduce new race/class player character combinations and much, much more. In order to create a goblin or a worgen and access content for levels 81 to 85, you have to buy Cataclysm.
Rekkos asked:
I was wondering, does anyone know who is putting on the armor on Deathwing in the cinematic?
That's the Twilight's Hammer Cult, Deathwing's crazy servants, preaching the end of the world and salvation by the fire of the aspect of death.
hokiebuddy asked:
Why did they make the heirloom gear so expensive after 4.0.1?
Blizzard updated heirloom gear prices to reflect what you would be paying for them at level 85. Old heirlooms may not work past level 80, but they are designed to be bought by top-level characters for their alts, so their price was adjusted, if a little early.

Do we have an idea when 4.0.3 will go into effect?
carebear Oct 19th 2010 11:28AM
sometime after 4.0.2
Moorit Oct 19th 2010 11:27AM
Soon.
Novalix Oct 19th 2010 11:31AM
Ha!
Seriously though...
Zheo Oct 19th 2010 11:33AM
In a previous Q, someone had mentioned that it's normally 2-4 weeks BEFORE the release date of the expansion. So look for the patch mid-end November.
JoeHelfrich Oct 19th 2010 11:35AM
Actually, given Blizzard's conventions, 4.0.2 may not exist at all; that number is reserved for "Oh my god we have to change everything now" type emergency patch following a release.
So, it's possible we'll see it today, or they could fix everything server side or with only incremental client patches.
That said, has Blizzard said that they're going to release 4.0.3 prior to Cataclysm launching? I thought they'd drop at the same time.

Thanks Zheo!

my guess would be the middle of November. because they officially announced on the 15th thatthe ZG mounts were being taken out and they always say they give a month notice before taking out a mount.

You can make a pretty good guess based upon past events of what Blizz has done, and also what events are currently surrounding the release date for Cata.
Here's a good breakdown (in my opinion!).
10/12/10: 4.0.1 patch
10/18/10 - 10/31/10: Hollow's End
Possible dates for 4.0.3: 11/2 (unlikely), 11/9 (my money is here), 11/16 (absolute latest)
12/07/10: Cataclysm
There has to be enough time for players to get through the quest lines, the elemental bosses, and huge bug fixes that the Shattering will cause during the release of 4.0.3. The 9th is a good date coming off a holiday and provides ample time for those who don't like blowing through quest lines to get everything done, and prepared for when Cata hits.

All of the pre-expansion storylines were done on the PTR, which was on version 4.0.1, with all the old map files. I think we'll see that content pre-patch.
Oscar Oct 19th 2010 12:04PM
It'll probably be released the week after the final phase of the elemental invasions, not sure how many phases there are, I was on the ptr a few times seemed like 3 phases, final one being the invasions of the cities. If 1 phase is released every week then about 4 weeks til we see 4.03 drop. I wonder if phase 1 will start today as the earthquakes have been going on since 4.01.
Asaron Oct 19th 2010 12:12PM
Well 4.03 actually contains an awful lot of what Cataclysm offers. It isn't like the patches that have come before previous expansions. 4.01 is their equivalent.
I think we'll see that patch the week before Cataclysm's full launch.
SINisterWyvern Oct 19th 2010 12:36PM
4.0.3 will be December 7th
Azizrael Oct 19th 2010 12:51PM
My guess is 11/30, a week before the expansion comes out. I say this because the game is being released in the EU on a Tuesday, and EU maintenance is a Wednesday, so surely they wouldn't put it on sale in Europe 36 hours before you can use it... would they? I'll be a sad panda if I get it and can't play right away.
Slaytanic Oct 19th 2010 1:42PM
I thought 4.0.3 WAS Cataclysm.
Skarn Oct 19th 2010 2:18PM
We haven't seen the Doom Cult active on live servers yet, nor the elemental invasion. Both of those are likely to happen prior to 4.0.3, so don't expect to see the Shattering until those go live. Of course, they could hit today or next week.
Devloc Oct 19th 2010 2:43PM
4.0.3 is Cata, is it not? You weren't able to create Death Knights until Wrath of the Lich King released, why would we be able to create new Cata content before Cata is released?
Naze Oct 19th 2010 3:01PM
No, the patch is NOT Cataclysm. Patch 4.03 is mostly about world changes. You won't be able to create goblins/worgen without the expansion installed.
Skarn Oct 19th 2010 5:07PM
"4.0.3 is Cata, is it not?"
Not exactly. 4.0.3 is basically Cataclysm for people that don't buy Cataclysm. This expansion is different from the first two. For BC you just had one patch, 2.0.1. Wrath just had 3.0.1. Cata is different because there is so much changing with the world, it was better to split it into 2 patches. 4.0.1 was the mechanics patch, changing the framework of how we interact with the world. 4.0.3 is the actual world changes. It will include some data like the worgen and goblin models since everyone will need to be able to see those, but you won't be able to create them without the actual expansion.
Since 4.0.3 is the Shattering of the world - when all the terrain changes - it's possible that it will hit on Dec 7, with the actual expansion. I don't think so though, for one big reason: patches are buggy. This is gonna be a HUGE patch, with a bigger impact on the actual world that we play in than 4.0.1. I fully expect some bugs and unexpected problems when it's applied. Blizzard is certain to know this too and they don't want to deal with all that on the actual expansion day. The patch will come at least a week early, probably 2, to give them time to deal with patching issues so that the world is ready to go on Dec 7.
The other stuff with the elemental invasion bosses is all PRE-Shattering stuff. It should definitely come BEFORE 4.0.3.

The only reason I think it won't be later than what I stated above, is because in the past they try to avoid holidays (both in game and out). Thanksgiving puts a hamper on any date after 11/16.
