I've been combat for the vast majority of my Rogues lifetime, with the small exception of when Assassination did more damage in early to mid WotLK. As soon as Combat became almost viable again, I went right back.
However, I am nothing if not a pure DPS. Assassination is higher, so I want to switch to Assassination. Except the only quick dagger I have is a 232 one, compared to Heartpiece. Or I could use another 232 slow one. Basically, my daggers are crap, so I have to stay combat. Yeah, Assassination is better, but my combat weapons are twice as good and I've always been a believer in 'spec to your weapons'.

That's my problem right now, I only have one halfway-decent dagger and I don't feel like going to all the hassle of trying to pick up one (or 2, since mine's not the greatest) daggers that will be replaced fairly quickly once Cata drops.

I actually had comparable average dps as mutilate with two 219 daggers(Krick's) over combat with two 251 axes (Frost Giant, Bone Warden). I added Flesh-Carving to the equation and I did well over 1k dps higher. Not sure if its gear differences, but as of now, spec seems to outweigh weapon tier by a lot. Just my case though, try it out and see for yourself.

There are a few options for trying to scoop up decent daggers without doing much work. Blood Weeper (232 1.8 speed dagger) has a relatively high drop rate from Devourer of Souls in H-FoS. While not a great dagger by current standards, anyone wanting to switch from combat to mutilate should be able to pick up this weap quickly, at least if RNG doesn't forsake you. If the weekly is Jaraxxus, jump in and get yourself a shot at the 245 1.4-speed dagger that he sometimes (~7%) drops. And if you're honor-capped, as many of us are at this point, your best option is to just go pick up a pair of wrathful 264 daggers, reforge some of the resil, and enjoy your new DPS. :)
