Maybe combat is moving to a slow/slow model? On the cata.wowhead.com site, I did a search for all 1handed swords, maces, and axes. All strength and agility 1-handers were 2.6 speed. The logical step from there is that Blizzard may be moving combat rogues to a slow/slow model. Since I've never really played combat, I'm not sure how this change would affect talents, rotations, and the overall play style. However, it would make sense in terms of the mastery bonus at level 85 to have a slow/slow mechanic - I would say that combat rogue mastery seems to be similar to how enhancement shaman Windfury Weapon works (although for shaman, windfury is a main-hand attack). http://www.wowhead.com/spell=8232 (link to windfury weapon). Also, the first poster on the wowhead site that links to main gauche had the same thought as me - slow/slow. http://cata.wowhead.com/spell=76806Thoughts?

Unfortunately a slow/slow model means that our gains from Combat Potency and Deadly Poison will be minimized, and these are two of the most powerful aspects of the combat spec. Without them, we lose massive amounts of damage, and gain only a small benefit from MG.

Here is someone on EJ making a similar supposition as you, in the next post Aldriana states why this is bad reasoning. Basically, MG/mastery is at odds with normal rogue mechanics but those other mechanics (specifically Combat Potency in this example) are just so powerful that MG will never be able to even closely compete with them. At that point, mastery for combat becomes a drag on the spec.http://elitistjerks.com/f78/t105659-4_0_1_rogue_faq/p17/#post1778358

There's no longer any reason to restrict combat's offhand to a weapon that matches the main hand; in other words, if you want a fast offhand, just grab a dagger. Of course, that'll make Main Gauche even worse, since Daggers are normalized to a faster speed than other one-handed weapons. That's almost certainly the idea, anyway, hence the name for the ability. Even if an actual Main Gauche was designed as a parrying weapon.

Tin, very good point. (This is where I'm now a bit more educated.)Combat potency http://www.wowhead.com/spell=35551 is completely in opposition of Main Gauche http://www.wowhead.com/spell=76806 ... I sort of understood that when Chase wrote that in the main article, but it's a lot more clear now.I would suspect that blizzard will have to get rid of either the talent or the mastery; if they don't, then I would feel really bad for people who play combat, because that is a very obvious contradiction in mechanics.
