Cataclysm: Class-specific quests removed

Now that I've fulfilled my duties as Official Site Curmudgeon, as it were, we'll get down to brass tacks. Many class-specific quests are being changed or removed entirely. We'll let Nethaera fill you in on the details.
Azeroth is on the eve of a dramatic transformation, and as World of Warcraft changes, sometimes the old must go to make way for the new. Since the world elements that support them will be gone, many aging quests will exist only in the mists of the past.
In particular, there's been some confusion regarding lower-level class specific quests that can no longer be completed. Never fear: class mounts and abilities remain available via class trainers, even though the quests associated with them are no longer available. Also, there are several low and mid-level weapons, trinkets and robes that were once awarded via class specific quests which are no longer available and their associated quests have been removed.
We are looking forward to offering new quests, quest lines and rewards as players level through World of Warcraft: Cataclysm instead. For example, we plan a level 20 dungeon based quest which will offer weapon rewards appropriate to all classes. There will also be a similar level 50 dungeon quest which has a headpiece reward.

Alas, my worgen warrior won't be able to carry a Whirlwind Axe with pride. Blood elf paladins will still be able to get their tabards via a level 50 quest, and hunters working on Rhok'delar will be able to complete that quest at level 60 by running Blackwing Lair, as Nefarian will now drop the Mature Black Dragon Sinew. Otherwise, all the old class-specific quests are gone and new ones are coming in for levels 20 and 50. No word yet on if you can make an old-school Quel'Serrar in BWL as well, or if you still need to kill a level 80 Onyxia for a level 60 epic sword.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it; nothing will be the same! I am going miss the pally charger quest..
Sterdoker Oct 21st 2010 7:21PM
I just realized: Verigan's Fist will no longer exist.
This is a sad, sad day.
Darias.Perenolde Oct 21st 2010 7:34PM
"In my day son, you had to WORK for you Charger! And you were a better paladin for it!"

I remember tyring to do the Dire Maul part solo, and without the key. Get naked and pull the dudes to you to kill you. Rez on the other side of the door. C a r e f u l l y pull the trash mobs one by one to clear them. Then, muster your best skill and cooldowns to try to solo the boss.
Good times.

What about the Shaman helm that looks like it's a Japanese cat ears hat?!
Seems I will actually need to do that quest soon.

"I just realized: Verigan's Fist will no longer exist. "
Why would that be? Instead of a paladin-specific weapon quest at level 20... we get a paladin-specific weapon quest at level 20.
On the other hand, it's pretty likely that you'll have tanking and healing options, too.

Can't say I'll miss that quest line... It was horrid when I did it. Must say that I'll miss Verigan's Fist quest, although I still have the mace in my bank. :D Oh the good ol' days, how I miss you!
Hurbster Oct 22nd 2010 11:22AM
A tanking weapon would be great.

Bummer! I kind of liked having special quests only I could do as a mage. :) Oh, Tabitha in Dustwallow, how I loathe ye...

I discovered this last week Wednesday - I was busy with the Azshara mage questline that eventually sends you to ST. I had to kill the sirens for their coral and noticed the quest was no longer in my log. The GM confirmed that it had been removed from the game. I was wondering when they were going to get round to letting every-one know.
I'm very sad the Dreadsteed questline is gone - my level 80 lock was busy with it :(.

My Dreadsteed of Xoroth cried a little...
Narshe Oct 21st 2010 8:22PM
Speaking of mounts, will this have any effect on the Druid Epic Flightform quest chain?
Hob Oct 21st 2010 8:47PM
@Narshe
Anzu is now resting in Heroic: Sethekk Halls for anyone to see, no summon required. I was in the middle of the quest chain on my tauren druid when patch 4.0.1 dropped, and now I can pick up the "Chasing the Moonstone" quest in Zangarmarch, but it is auto-dropped whenever I set foot in Azeroth.
The reply I got from a GM was, delete your cache and wtf files, uninstall all of your addons, and try it again!
Yeah, not going through that again...
Ricohardt Oct 21st 2010 10:46PM
They should make the Doomguard questline a Feat of Strength. Not many locks had it before the 4.0 patch, now everyone does.
Hanak Oct 22nd 2010 5:26AM
All class quests that are slated for removal act like that. They disappear from the log as soon as you switch zones.
I had a thought about duoing them with one toon taking the quest and the other travelling in advance to the correct zone. Share Q, let other toon travel, share again, complete. Rinse repeat for every Q in the chain. Dunno if it works though. It's not every day you find another player of your class that wants to (and can) do the class quests with you.

I can proudly say I've done every (horde side) Warlock specific quest. They were a riot. I remember trying to kill elementals in arathi highlands for the robe quest while I was 5-6 levels lower than them. I hadn't even heard of spell hit at the time.
I've still got all my things for the dreadsteed ritual in the bank.
I spent hours farming demons in winterspring for the doomguard quest.
And then there's Niby...

Well only thing I'm glad that you dont have to go to freaking sunken temple again for class quest..
But then again most of the class quests at proper level were good, fun, UNIQUE. So far in beta I've seen only "Ok go to SFK and do this and get weapon".. that is so lame and doesnt feel like CLASS QUEST it feels like.. well, quest that you and 9 other classes will do at same time.
I always enjoyed the berserk stance quest over the barrens island, even if I was alliance and had no idea how to get there. I think back in the day I was going to BB boat, went to ratchet just to explore and found island I could go to and found out I had quest to return there (otherwise I wouldnt've ever gotten that stance *cough*)
"They want to avoid just that: confusion that "oh you must do quest for ressurrect?" which could be avoided by placing the quests in proper place AND with new in-game quest map system.
They should make them better than they were 5 years ago but not remove.. I dont understand why they must remove so much. Change = good. Remove too much = bad.
Possum Oct 22nd 2010 7:49AM
I agree. They add so much flavour to the classes and the leveling experience. While Blizz are definitely making improvements to leveling I just don't like how they're making it more generic.
Elmo Oct 22nd 2010 8:35AM
I agree that the ST quests were quite horrible, even Whirlwind Axe was but others that granted an ability were great and adding the the feeling of playing a class.
What Shaman didn't like drinking a sapta to see elemental spirits others could not?
What Rogue didn't like sneaking through a tower using specific abilities on specific enemies to kill them?
What Paladin didn't feel good when he had done a good deed and was rewarded with a ress skill?
What Druid didn't learn how to embrace the spirit of the bear? (though this one could do with a little less running, not to mention Aqua form and Cure Poison)
anyway I think class quests learning you a new ability were great and gave you a bit of feeling to what makes your class special.

Bummer. The quest and final fight for the lvl 60 warlock mount was epic. (Even though you can now get the mount through the trainer, it's still an epic quest and will be missed!)
