Gold Capped: Manage your crafting with a queuing addon

If you are a crafter and you sell your items on the AH, chances are you've realized exactly how much time crafting can take. Obviously, a portion of the total crafting time is going to be spent actually crafting; however, not all of it is. A large portion of your time might be spend poring over the AH searching for prices on your finished goods and taking notes, as well as buying materials from the AH and vendors. There are addon solutions to this, and we're going to talk about a way to address the biggest time sinks involved in crafting: queuing and price management.
The Quick Auctions spinoffs
Zeroauctions and Auction Profit Master (hereafter referred to as ZA and APM) are both forks of the original glyph workhorse, Quick Auctions, which is dead and not coming back. They both do about the same thing, and they can both be used to help reduce the amount of time you spend crafting.

When they're installed, you'll see a button on your auctions tab called Summary. Click this, select your market, then click Get Data. This will not scan the whole AH like Auctioneer does, but it scans the market that you're working on. I'll use glyphs as my example, because as much as I hate circling back to the glyphs market all the time, it really does present the largest logistical challenge and everything you learn doing glyphs will be valid for your other markets. You can follow along with whatever market you're in, though.

Now that you have all your mats, click (once!) on the item at the top of the list, and it will start crafting. If you put in a quantity of 10, it will craft 10.
The advantages of automation
Here's what I used to do when I logged into my jewelcrafter to manually manage my crafting:
- manually search for all the cuts I could do
- remember the ones I wanted to cut
- figure out the cheapest way to get the mats needed and buy them
- forget the cuts I wanted to make
- look back in the AH to remind myself of the cuts I wanted to craft
- open a spreadsheet or notepad for "next time"
- craft all my goods
- realize I made several errors
- curse any errors that were unrecoverable
- buy more mats to fix the recoverable errors
- use QA or Auctioneer to mass-post my auctions
- get undercut immediately
Auto-mailing makes it easy
I'm saving the process of selling with these addons for another post because it's a little over my word limit. I'd like to draw your attention to the "auto-mail" option, though. Assuming you have groups already set up, you can set certain alts to be the recipients of those groups (or individual ungrouped items) and have any character auto-mail them by checking the "auto-mail" box. I use this to send all my herbs to my scribe, all my glyphs to my posting alts, all my raw gems to my jewelcrafter and all my enchanting mats to my enchanter. The few times I want to mail something to another character (if I want to smelt instead of prospect ore, for example), I simply uncheck "auto-mail" and send it manually.
This feature will be very handy for me in Cataclysm when I start crafting for disenchantment again. I used to have to check back every 5 to 10 minutes while crafting greens and blues to empty out my bags. Now, I'll just craft them in front of the mailbox with auto-mail checked.

Well, thats the first time I heard about queuing. Gotta try that out.
Neyssa Oct 21st 2010 9:28AM
If you take the glyph business for example, does it show what you CAN prepare and what you have not learned yet?
I use Auctioneer, Advanced TradeSkill Window and Lil'Sparky, and I am completely happy with it. I see how much the glyphs I can make cost, I can queque the production, and just drop it on AH.
However this addon seems to do the job of my above mentioned 3 addons. Hmm... I will give it a try. I like that it also shows how many of those in AH.
Is it possible to see glyphs you can make, but is no stock in AH? I made nice money with accidentaly running into empty glyph market this weekend.

"If you take the glyph business for example, does it show what you CAN prepare and what you have not learned yet?"
Honestly, I don't have a good answer for this, since my scribe has all the recipes, but I believe it prevents you from queuing them if you are unable to craft them.

Referring to the second picture in the post, you'll notice 3 red "squares". The first one is the number of that glyph hes has queued to craft. By left clicking on the glyph name, you add it to crafting queue. The second box is the number of those glyphs currently on the market. The last box shows the lowest buyout of that glyph current available.
I like this add-on, because it puts that vital information right on hand.

The queuing system has an option to show / hide items you can't craft. If you show uncraftables, those items will have a big raid symbol 'X' in front of them.
This addon is compatible with Auctioneer. It doesn't really interact with Lil'Sparky's Workshop. But the queue interface won't show unless you have the stock crafting interface going (or at least, it won't show the queue button and I have no idea how to bring up the queue without it). I've had to toggle crafting interfaces using LoadIt (Addon Control Panel is another option).
If memory serves... the 3rd column is your market view. The white numbers are how many of that item are in the AH. Bracketed numbers are your auctions; how many you have up vs. how many you've set as your default. Red means you've been undercut. You probably want to go check the in-game help menu on that though as I may be wrong in the particulars. :)

@Neyssa "If you take the glyph business for example, does it show what you CAN prepare and what you have not learned yet?"
There will be a red X on the left side if you do not have the recipe.
A second column example and explanation: [1/4] (14) 12
This means you have one posted on the AH, and you have a group setup to keep 4 posted, you need to post! The (14) means you have 14 total, 1 on the AH leaves 13 in your bags. The 12 means there are twelve total on the AH.
If the [1/4] is in red, it means you are undercut. If the [1/4 is in green, it means you are the lowest price.

Can you use these in conjunction with Auctioneer? Or is that necessary? *is addicted to Auctioneer's batch posting* >.>

Nice rundown on ZeroAuctions - can't wait to try it out.
I noticed that you (as well as most people I know) switched to Auctionator after 4.0.1. I'm really liking Auctionator and haven't missed Auctioneer yet. Plus it seems to work with Market Watcher, which I have you thank for introducing it to me!
Have you ever done an article about alternatives to Auctioneer (especially given the large memory footprint of Auctioneer)?

@Elwoods:
Why bother camping the AH? Better to approach your competition and come to certain "agreements". *eg*
Peebers Oct 21st 2010 10:09AM
Woot! I know I'm a late bloomer and I'm prolly losing some gold by putting it off, but I can't wait to add this to my "starting from scratch 4.0.1 UI" this weekend.
matt Oct 21st 2010 9:53AM
These addons are completely in accordance with the terms of use. Every auction posted or canceled requires a hardware event. please give this well respected the blog credit for knowing the difference between an addon and an exploit.
Russell Oct 21st 2010 9:53AM
If you knew anything about this addon, you'd realize that the number of times you have to click is equal to how many you'd have to do it manually. The advantage is in having all your information displayed in one location and not having to switch between seven UI windows to find the information then go back and craft. You still have to choose the number of items you want to create and click to craft the set of them (just as with the regular UI).
matt Oct 21st 2010 10:01AM
I should add that when these addons are used to queue crafting that the user will need to initiate a hardware event for each new recipe that is crafted in the queue. for instance the queue will craft 10 "glyph of X" but before it proceeds to crafting "glyph of Y", you will need to click/press a button
Tyrsenus Oct 21st 2010 10:04AM
"Now that you have all your mats, click (once!) on the item at the top of the list, and it will start crafting. If you put in a quantity of 10, it will craft 10. "
That sounds like a violation of the ToU and EULA to me.
"You agree that you will not, under any circumstances: A. use [...] automation software [...] designed to modify the World of Warcraft experience"
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/eula.html
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/legal/termsofuse.html
It's not simply a matter of number of hardware events, but when those events occur. If I were to click Shadow Bolt ten times to queue ten spells before even the first one were cast, that would be in violation. In general, Blizzard wants each hardware event to occur after the previous action is executed.
Ultimately it's up to Blizzard, and I would request their judgment.
TimR Oct 21st 2010 10:11AM
It is no different than the default ui where you enter 10 of a certain item to be created, and you create 10. You don't have to click the create button 10 times to make 10 of the same item.
Mugutu Oct 21st 2010 11:45AM
Yup, guess Blizz breaks their own rules too then. You can do this with the DEFAULT UI. Seriously, people, stop making idiotic accusations.
matt Oct 21st 2010 10:20AM
What I think you are misunderstanding, and perhaps Basil did not make this clear enough, is that you must click "proceed" ( or some such thing) after the completion of each recipe. The goal is not to automate the entire crafting process but to create a workflow from market analysis to raw material purchasing to crafting to posting.
All this addon is doing is searching the AH, allowing you to select a series of items, preparing a material list for those items, searching the AH for the mats, preparing a crafting "list" based on your selections. Beyond that it functions with no less interaction than the stock UI, It is simply remembering what you intend to do so that you do not have to write it down
TimR Oct 21st 2010 10:08AM
Harm, maybe you should do a little research before flying off your rocker.
Basil, you do great work. Keep it up. I enjoy reading your articles.
Elwoods Oct 21st 2010 10:10AM
Errr what?
You actually still have to click some buttons dont you know.
Also this writer is one of the best on this site (in my opinion).
Are you one of the people who are sitting in front of the AH 24/7 and dont like others getting your tips?
Scooter Oct 21st 2010 10:33AM
@Mugutu
We could do without the "idiotic" comment. Sure, he's probably wrong but he did take some time to do some research. He's an idiot for having the wrong idea. He's simply mistaken.
"guess Blizz breaks their own rules too then"
Try reading the TOC And EULA. Blizzard is pretty clear that it is referring to third party software and NOT the default UI. Tyrsenus did some research and made a judgment call. Your the one who made an idiotic comment sarcasm or not.
The only way to get a real answer on this is to post the Blizzard forums and hope an Admin will respond with an answer and that could take several days. The fact is none of us know for sure unless Blizzard says it's OK.
Scooter Oct 21st 2010 10:34AM
**Correction**
He's NOT an idiot for having the wrong idea. He's simply mistaken.
