I think it has a lot to do with the mechanics of the costumes and the way you were there. The illidan guy could hold his head upright because of his horns, he had trouble walking because of the hooves, and he constantly had another guy behind him guiding him and pulling strings to make the wings move. It really distracts you from the character when all you can see is someone dressed up (if that makes sense).
The monk could moved very freely. She had crafted real leather and even pulled off some very smooth martial-art-like moves with her weapons. It was very emersive and I was quite satisfied that she won.
That said the ghost looked freaking sweet. Very accurate, emersive and practically real. I was VERY surprised she was not a finalist.
