They did, I loved Anduin's involvement and I was surprised at just how sympathetic Varian was, Knaak did an extremely poor job with Varian in Stormrage so I was surprised to see the character actually elicit emotion.
Varian wasn't the war-mongering provoking imperialist horde-hating douchebag he is in the game, he was an actual character, he even regretted things and could be persuaded by his allies(where he seemingly never is in the game) against poor courses of action.
What I'm surprised by is the contrast between game Varian and book Varian, though Garrosh remains intact Varian got a lot of sympathy character expansion.
