BlizzCon 2010: Guilds meet up around BlizzCon fun

Some 25 guildmates gathered from as far as Washington and Texas for the meetup, including Alex Mueller (aka Sparco the holy paladin), GM of <GNERDS>. Despite the fact that none of the guild's members knew each other before playing WoW together, they're all fast friends now. "We don't call each other by our character names anymore," Alex reports. (In fact, Alex proposed to his wife, also a member of the guild, during BlizzCon two years ago.)
The group planned to spend the rest of the weekend hanging out at the homes of local players before scattering again, to resume their friendship via Vent and guildchat.

Sadly I haven't been part of a guild so far that has this kind of closeness, though I do have a few friends I get along with through WoW now, and RealID has helped me keep in touch.
Biggest problem I think is online paranoia and younger members. Most guilds I've been in don't like sharing personal information, or there's no maturity limit on recruitment. If you're a group of adults who have the means to meet up each year without parental permission, or you're not afraid of letting people know stuff about your personal life (work, marriage, school, etc) then it's easier to have closeness like this.
Alas, I haven't had the experience yet which makes me sad, but at the same time I'm one of those people who can't spare time/money to go to Blizzcon lol

My guild is in the opposite position.
We're all adults, most married or in a relationship, and many who have spouses or significant others who also play.
The problem is that adult responsibilities - jobs, children, et cetera - prevent us from being able to get together in an organized fashion.
There have been a few "hey, I'll be in your town on business, let's get a drink!" or "why don't you come crash on our couch for a few days and we'll hang out!" meetups, but nothing with more than a handful of guildies who just happen to be in the same place at the same time.

I have been in an Australasian guild for 5 years, and I am currently organising our second meetup. Unfortunately meeting up at Blizzcon is out of the question for us due to the cost of travelling to the US. Again due to the cost we have decided it shall be a bi-annual event, the first was held in Sydney, just prior to the release of WotLK, next one is in Queenstown, New Zealand in January ... its gonna be awesome ... again :)

That looks fantastic. Wish I had a guild like that. :)

Our guild, Fate on Cenarius met up at Blizzcon for our third straight year. This year, we came from NH, MA, TX, AZ and CA. Much fun had by all.

I live in Denmark (Europe/Scandinavia) and i can't afford to travel to the US for Blizzcon. I really wish Blizzard would do a Blizzcon in Europe and Asia. We do contribute to a sizable part of their WoW incomes after all

IMO they should take an in-game screenshot of their toons lined up in the order of the RL picture.

I think it would be so cool to meet up with my guild at any place at all. It would shock you if you discovered how many hours some people spend around their guilds a day, and they may not even know what their raiders they spend 4 hours a night withs names or faces outside of their toons. WoW can be very detached from the real world sometimes. Stories like these are really cool to me.
