BlizzCon 2010: Update on man injured during dance contest

BlizzCon 2010 is officially over! While most enjoyed their fun and games, one player wasn't quite so lucky. We ran a report earlier this weekend about a man who had injured himself in the dance competition, falling to the stage twice and not getting up the second time around. The next day, we caught up with the dancer named Daniel, aka Darkdarius, an orc hunter from the guild <Obsessive> of Bladefist (US-H), who was thankfully on his feet and hanging out with the rest of his guild. Daniel was happy to give us a brief interview about his injury.
So Daniel, what happened exactly? The footage looked pretty brutal.
I was just jumping around [performing the undead male dance] and I fell. I got back up, but the second time I fell, I just heard a pop and I couldn't bend my leg at all, so they had to carry me offstage. It kind of felt a little embarassing.
Did you go to the hospital immediately after?
No, first I went to the first aid person at the convention center and she checked up on me. Then after that, I went to the emergency room and they checked me out, then told me that I broke a ligament in my leg.
Ouch! How long are you going to be in that cast?
Well, I still have to go back home to Arizona and I'm going to have to have surgery on my leg. Then I'll probably be in a brace for a couple of days.
Glad to hear it's not a major break. So would you call this a BlizzCon to remember?
[laughing] Yeah. I just can't wait to see all the YouTube comments!
Daniel and the rest of his guild appeared to be in high spirits despite his injury and were more than willing to pose for a photo, throwing up the horns in true undead style. Thank you to Daniel and the rest of the crew from <Obsessive> for the opportunity to chat, and from all of us at WoW Insider, get well soon!

One thing you may point out for all those thrashing this guy..."You may think this is funny, until it happens to you." Just saying...

You know, i don't' see why people are giving him a hard time i saw several people slip around on the stage he was just the one to final break his leg. and hey, he put a lot into it. And he is a good sport.

Did you notice his knee already had a bruise on it? Or is that normal discoloration for knees when you have become a forsaken? :P

It's nice to see somebody from Bladefist putting out some effort. Half the dps I meet in random heroics from Bladefist barely know how to auto-attack.

Nice to hear he'll be fine. =) Though it is interesting that a guy falling during the dance competition is one of Blizzcon's highlights.

Interesting is one way of putting it!

As a close friend of Daniel, i told him to "break a leg" during his performance, didn't mean it literally
Lucidique Oct 25th 2010 5:59PM
Irony biting one in the ass is always funny, however somewhat nasty in this case. Give your friend my best wishes!

He is supposed to be going into surgery in the next little while, i spoke with him this morning and he was doing alright. Thank you again Anne for the coverage and genuine concern in this. I thank the rest of you also for not turning this into a "youtube shinanigans."
Anne is was a pleasure to meet you and thank you again.

Let us know how he's doing after, Chad - it was great meeting all of you, too!

Nice to hear that he's doing quite well, although I don't think he'll like the YouTube comments :P

I didn't think it looked all that brutal. I was expecting far worse when I heard it described. (Not to downplay the injury. I mean, what happened, happened. I'm just saying I was surprised to see someone get so hurt from what looked like mere jumping up and down.)
The best part of the video was Jay Mohr's skeptical reply, though. "Are you serious?" I really want to get that as a soundbite for vent.

It's deceptively easy to get an injury like this one. A friend of mine in high school had a very similar injury stepping down from a chair while we were decorating for homecoming. It seems silly, but all it takes is you putting your weight down at a bad angle.

Kinda makes me afraid to do anything...I'd better just go home and play WoW.
Vodkamartini Oct 25th 2010 5:25PM
Oh, you can get hurt by playing WoW ...
Ligament popped in wrist from lifting luggage on vacation + De Quervain's carpal tunnel from playing WoW and working too much = paralyzed right hand for me, required surgery.

Watch the HD youtube clip at 41 seconds you can see the knee pop at the 41 second mark. I have had a similar injury (but from snowboarding) and it is pretty brutal.

I hope the kid doesnt get too much crap for this.

All it takes is the lower leg slipping a little, and the knee trying to follow. Not to make light, but "it doesn't bend that way."

Sometimes a massive impact, fall, or accident is required to injure something...but sometimes even a misstep will do it. I don't find it at all surprising that he popped a tendon this way. I did that to my hand once just leaning on a counter. It may be odd and may be unglamorous, but it does happen.
Amusingly enough I actually sprained my ankle at Blizzcon this year and I still have no idea how I did it. One minute I was walking, the next, I was in excruciating pain every time I tried to put weight on my foot.
Maybe it was something in the air? XD

Poor guy. Sucks about having to have surgery. Glad to see he's in good spirits about the whole situation though.
