BlizzCon 2010: Update on man injured during dance contest

BlizzCon 2010 is officially over! While most enjoyed their fun and games, one player wasn't quite so lucky. We ran a report earlier this weekend about a man who had injured himself in the dance competition, falling to the stage twice and not getting up the second time around. The next day, we caught up with the dancer named Daniel, aka Darkdarius, an orc hunter from the guild <Obsessive> of Bladefist (US-H), who was thankfully on his feet and hanging out with the rest of his guild. Daniel was happy to give us a brief interview about his injury.
So Daniel, what happened exactly? The footage looked pretty brutal.
I was just jumping around [performing the undead male dance] and I fell. I got back up, but the second time I fell, I just heard a pop and I couldn't bend my leg at all, so they had to carry me offstage. It kind of felt a little embarassing.
Did you go to the hospital immediately after?
No, first I went to the first aid person at the convention center and she checked up on me. Then after that, I went to the emergency room and they checked me out, then told me that I broke a ligament in my leg.
Ouch! How long are you going to be in that cast?
Well, I still have to go back home to Arizona and I'm going to have to have surgery on my leg. Then I'll probably be in a brace for a couple of days.
Glad to hear it's not a major break. So would you call this a BlizzCon to remember?
[laughing] Yeah. I just can't wait to see all the YouTube comments!
Daniel and the rest of his guild appeared to be in high spirits despite his injury and were more than willing to pose for a photo, throwing up the horns in true undead style. Thank you to Daniel and the rest of the crew from <Obsessive> for the opportunity to chat, and from all of us at WoW Insider, get well soon!

Given the interview format... and the nature of the incident in general... This shoulda been posted under 15 Minutes of Fame.

After how the commenters just crushed the last one? Not surprised they didn't.

I don't know what "Glad to hear it's not a major break" means. If he's having surgery to repair his ACL, that's a 6 month recovery process, and it could affect him the rest of his life. If he'd actually broken a bone up there it probably would have been less serious.

All I'd heard of the event was that someone had broken their leg, so I had images of bones sticking out and other horrible things in my head. He seemed to be just fine when I spoke to him however, and seemed to think his recovery would be pretty quick, all things considered.

If he's lucky, it was "only" one of the other ligaments. Looked pretty similar to how I injured mine last year, so I sympathise with him and hope he's back on his feet soon.

Yeah, those ligament injuries can be nasty. I have heard it can be better to break a bone than to tear a ligament, I'm sure it varies though depending on a lot of things.
Tim Oct 25th 2010 5:28PM
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound that abrasive. You are correct, on the gruesome scale, it was not a serious injury ;)
Since he doesn't appear to be an athlete, his recovery (in getting back to do his normal everyday activity) shouldn't be too long.

It also depends on what one does. I'm sure that for somebody who works a desk job and plays WoW or the like in their free time, any sort of injury (that isn't a permanent injury) is much less major than for somebody who works a physical job, or is a professional athlete.

i used to work as a student radiographer, when you "pull" or "tear" a ligament theres a good chance you pull a fragment of bone off with it, makes for a painful experience! the worst part is they take ages to heal up as its very difficult to line up the pieces in surgeory to make sure they fuse properly.

Probably wasn't as awful as some might expect, hence the comment. I had my leg broken as part of a procedure to fix the way my foot face and I was in a cast for a good 8 months, I couldn't walk without aid for a year. I guess it depends on where the breakage is, but I won't deny a ligament injury is awful, my cousin snapped a ligament in his hand, was NOT fun. I assume the general idea in people is that broken bones are worse than ligaments, even if its not true.
glad to hear he is taking it in good spirits. I don't understand people who feel the need to call him nasty names over this, its not like it was deliberate, and how hard is it to just think 'hope he gets better soon'?

Doesn't really make a difference if you work a desk job or no. When you pull or break something like that, the pain tends to be around for life. I know. I've done it to both my knees and these days, one or the other will hurt or ache going up and down stairs, and that's years after the injury.
Good luck to this guy and hopefully his recovery is complete and he won't suffer lasting effects.

Ugh. Ligament and tendon injuries sucketh mightily! I'd actually rather break a bone than tear a tendon.
Best wishes on the surgery and recovery dude!

Agree, i ripped my kneeband a few years ago skiing (hit a rock, flipped headsover 5 or 6 times, right ski still didn't pop off), and i still have problems from that 5 years later and probably will have for the rest of my life. Broken bones anytime above that (well maybe not a broken dpinal cord bone or ribcage).

Thanks for following up on this. I felt super bad for the guy, but it's good to hear that he's taking it in stride and didn't let it put a damper on his fun. You rock, Darkdarius! Most. Dedicated dancer. Ever.

Hope he didn't spend too much of Blizzcon in the hospital!

My sister (who is going to apply to a dance program in a college soon) just rolled her eyes. I told her geeks have different levels of dedication when it comes to athletic things.
To be fair though, she has had a torn tendon, back problems, and quite a few other things that have required physical therapy over the years because of her dance.
See? This is why I like to sit on my butt for these things. Dancing is a high contact sport, it will only bring pain.
