BlizzCon 2010: Update on man injured during dance contest

BlizzCon 2010 is officially over! While most enjoyed their fun and games, one player wasn't quite so lucky. We ran a report earlier this weekend about a man who had injured himself in the dance competition, falling to the stage twice and not getting up the second time around. The next day, we caught up with the dancer named Daniel, aka Darkdarius, an orc hunter from the guild <Obsessive> of Bladefist (US-H), who was thankfully on his feet and hanging out with the rest of his guild. Daniel was happy to give us a brief interview about his injury.
So Daniel, what happened exactly? The footage looked pretty brutal.
I was just jumping around [performing the undead male dance] and I fell. I got back up, but the second time I fell, I just heard a pop and I couldn't bend my leg at all, so they had to carry me offstage. It kind of felt a little embarassing.
Did you go to the hospital immediately after?
No, first I went to the first aid person at the convention center and she checked up on me. Then after that, I went to the emergency room and they checked me out, then told me that I broke a ligament in my leg.
Ouch! How long are you going to be in that cast?
Well, I still have to go back home to Arizona and I'm going to have to have surgery on my leg. Then I'll probably be in a brace for a couple of days.
Glad to hear it's not a major break. So would you call this a BlizzCon to remember?
[laughing] Yeah. I just can't wait to see all the YouTube comments!
Daniel and the rest of his guild appeared to be in high spirits despite his injury and were more than willing to pose for a photo, throwing up the horns in true undead style. Thank you to Daniel and the rest of the crew from <Obsessive> for the opportunity to chat, and from all of us at WoW Insider, get well soon!

Funny you mention that. The rest of them are saying "I Love You" in sign language.
Saeadame Oct 25th 2010 7:13PM
@Dayne, well that may not be the Undead signature hand sign, it's still nice =p.

I can't say it's a great idea to divulge his character's name and realm here...I guess he gave it out willingly, but oh well.
I can't imagine the average WoW player being particularly nice to him at this point. I'd be looking at a name change.

I'm really glad he's okay. So many jerks talking trash about him. At least he had the cajones to get up there on the stage in front of all those people and do something. We were watching Blizzcon when it happened and my whole guild felt sorry for the guy. I hope Blizz makes him the next Leroy.
Daniel, my guild and I all hope you have a speedy recovery and no lasting damage to your knee!

You all shouldn't underplay this injury. Just cause bones are not sticking out doesnt mean its not serious. As someone said, a ligament tear can be worse than a break, and will likely take longer to rehab.
I had a friend laid up for a few weeks and then in different stages of knee braces for months following surgery to his ACL. He was jogging, and hopped over a barrel, and landed at a strange angle. It is easy to do, and a long painful process to rehab.

Ok, I have to rant a little.
1) You tear ligaments, not break them
2) He is wearing a brace and not a cast
3) I saw comments saying it was the ACL he tore, that was never mentioned in the article. There are 4 major ligaments that are in the knee: ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL. The PCL is the only one that is not normally fixed surgically.

technically its posible to "break" a ligament, like you would have a break in a cable.
also froma a medical perspective, tear is an awful term. usually tear is applied to things like skin or muscle, usually where the tissue is soft and stretchy. tear also inplies an imcomplete partition of the tissue, so the tissue is still connected, but just by strands.
the most common injury involving and ligament, let alone an immensly strong ligament like the one in the knee, is for the ligament to pull of the bone with a piece of the bone still attatched. its most likely he injured his ACL if he requires surgeory.
xowarbird69ox Oct 25th 2010 7:24PM
Actually, at times the other ligaments won't be repaired surgically either. I have a partial ACL tear, and the docs want to wait for it to tear the rest of the way before it is repaired. I could've opted for surgery right away, but deceided to wait. Sucks since it is painful, but since I don't play a lot of basketball it isn't so bad.

Stuff like this isn't funny unless it's deserved by doing something stupid. I'm glad he's gonna be ok. It looked nasty when i saw it.
He took it like a freaking champ though! He just stayed down, didn't cry, swear, or yell. He took it like a man and rolled with it. Gotta respect that.

New achievement: Fall off Dalaran and die while /dance :D

The proper response to this if (unless you are a total fail at life) is:
1. Props to the guy for getting down and dancing hard
and then either
a) Total sympathy if you don't know him personally
or
b) Busting his chops about it for the rest of his life IF you are his friend.
Mozared Oct 25th 2010 7:13PM
To be fair, it is pretty hilarious, even though it sucks balls for the dude. He was just there being enthousiastic about the dancing contest, got trolled by the band playing the wrong music and ended up breaking his leg as well. Hope he gets well soon as he definitely didn't deserve this.
Mayhew Oct 26th 2010 6:24PM
Yeah, you are the first person that I've seen mention this so far. This poor guy not only had a horrible accident in the middle of his dance, but the band wasn't even playing the right music for him to begin with. He was doing the undead male dance, and they were playing the music for the undead female dance. The two are not at all compatible. That's a doubly rough situation.
Tyeton Oct 25th 2010 7:00PM
First of all, you don't "break" ligaments, they tear. I've had all 3 replaced in my left knee. He'll be in that brace for about 6-8 weeks depending on his surgeon. It will take upwards of a year before he gets 100% mobility back in the knee, IF he does his physical therapy.
Best wishes to him though. Totally sucks about the knee.
RogueJedi86 Oct 25th 2010 7:10PM
He was on G4 just a minute talking about his injury! He even namedropped WoW Insider saying y'all got a little interview out of him!

Get him to the Royal Apothecary Quarters.
Feonor Oct 25th 2010 7:32PM
@tharveyyorkshire What you are referring to is called an avulsion fracture. That is where the bone comes off with the ligament. And we can refer to his ligamental damage as a rupture if you want, but that seems a bit much. Also, coming from a medical perspective, working with athletes all week, working with orthopaedic surgeons, and being exposed to orthopaedics for 20 years, tear is a perfectly acceptable term and is used most when referring to ligament injuries, next to sprain. Also, in textbooks you will see the different grades of tear referred to as Grade I "tear" up to a Grade III+ "tear".
@xowarbird69ox That is true, not all tears are repaired surgically. However, when talking about surgery for knee ligaments, they are usually referring to the ACL, MCL, and LCL. But you make a good point.

this is referring to an earlier post.
Pyromelter Oct 25th 2010 7:54PM
Usually if you are getting surgery for a knee ligament these days, it's for the ACL. PCL and LCL injuries are usually treated conservatively, although some do require surgery. Where I work, it is almost unheard of to have an MCL repaired by surgery. Even in grade III very bad tears, MCL's are often left alone to heal with therapy and conservative measures. The only time I've ever even heard of MCL work is in conjuction with ACL/medial meniscus "unhappy triad" situations.
Spot on about everything else. Tear is the appropriate term.
p.s. Comment system boss wins again!

It was the band's fault. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the undead dance should be done to metal.
They put him off his game with that odd choice of song.
