technically its posible to "break" a ligament, like you would have a break in a cable.
also froma a medical perspective, tear is an awful term. usually tear is applied to things like skin or muscle, usually where the tissue is soft and stretchy. tear also inplies an imcomplete partition of the tissue, so the tissue is still connected, but just by strands.
the most common injury involving and ligament, let alone an immensly strong ligament like the one in the knee, is for the ligament to pull of the bone with a piece of the bone still attatched. its most likely he injured his ACL if he requires surgeory.
