First of all, you don't "break" ligaments, they tear. I've had all 3 replaced in my left knee. He'll be in that brace for about 6-8 weeks depending on his surgeon. It will take upwards of a year before he gets 100% mobility back in the knee, IF he does his physical therapy.

Best wishes to him though. Totally sucks about the knee.
