Insider Trader: Easy gold before Cataclysm
Insider Trader is a column about professions, written by Basil "Euripides" Berntsen, who also writes Gold Capped on how to make money via the auction house.
This patch has been a windfall for gold-seeking professionals for a few reasons, but there have been some changes that affect everyone, no matter what addons you use or how much time you spend in the auction house. Let's start with the more subtle changes.
What's the most annoying part about mining and herbing? Unlike skinning, which simply lets you gather from a large number of creatures you are killing anyway, mining and herbalism force you to go out of your way to gather. Before patch 4.0.1, you could only track one thing at a time. Now, you can track everything at the same time!
This will make hunters and achievement seekers very happy. Anyone who wants to use tracking for more than either herbs or minerals can now just pick from a list of stuff they can see. Importantly, this makes double-gatherers much more viable than they used to be. People would typically only take either mining or herbalism because switching between them was a chore, and you could only track one at a time. Maybe that's why there are so many skinners? Now that you can track both at the same time, double-gathering is definitely the best way to make money with a trade skill while leveling.
How does this change your life now? Well, Cataclysm is expected to have two major developments for gatherers. First, while the auctioneer crowd will be trying to race to server-first skill cap on whatever they think will be the most money, people who farm ore and herbs will be making far more money until those crafting skills start paying dividends. Second, all the new goblins and worgen will need old-world materials to level their chosen professions. Farming for either of these sources of demand should be very lucrative. You don't have to wait until Cataclysm to farm for people leveling trade skills, either. None of the major raw base materials are changing, from what we know.
Of course, Hallow's End
Hallow's End just started, and like many holidays, contains plenty of ways to make some fairly easy gold. You can collect wands and charge "tips" for people looking to get the achievement, and you can sell a bunch of random items on the auction house like the Weighted Jack-o'-Lantern.
One of the changes this year is that people hoping to save 5,000 gold for the 310 percent flying skill will all want to get What A Long Strange Trip It's Been. This means they need to do Check Your Head and The Masquerade, and generally, there should be more demand for the tradable holiday goods.
Soloing Zul'Gurub
If you have a character high enough to solo ZG, you can make tons of money selling bijous and other rep items to people desperate to get the achievement before it gets removed from the game. There was a blue post that mentioned that while the Tome of Polymorph: Turtle would still be available after the expansion, but there's been no indication of how hard it will be to get. If you're too low a level to be able to solo ZG, consider going with a few friends and splitting the rewards.
No scribe? No jewelcrafter? No problem
The biggest demand right now is from people regemming and learning all their glyphs. If you aren't in a position to craft to serve this demand, you can still participate in the market. If you have money to invest, you can try buying cut or raw gems when there's a lot of supply and the prices are low and sell them on the weekends when there might be more buyers around than there is supply. Additionally, the Glyph of Mage Armor can't be made anymore because of a bug introduced in patch 4.0.1. If you can find it for less than 100g, you might be able to resell it for a profit. Since glyphs in general seem to be priced fairly low at the moment, I wouldn't speculate on buying and selling them yet.
Of course, there's always the old standby of selling Vanishing Powder at obnoxious markups. At least on my realm, however, people have happily caught on to this scam, and there's always tons of stock at what's getting really close to the price the vendor charges. If you want to sell vendor objects to players, at least pick something that saves them some travel time like old world mid level vendors.
Insider Trader takes you behind the scenes of the bustling subculture of professional craftsmen, examining the profitable, the tragically lacking and the methods behind the madness.

How long does it take for an 80 to solo ZG?
Stoop Oct 25th 2010 4:12PM
It takes me around 15 minutes, but I just go in and kill the raptor and tiger bosses. That's on either my hunter or my prot pally.
Dave Oct 25th 2010 4:16PM
I farmed my rep up to Exalted there in mostly Ulduar gear on my Feral Druid. A full clear would take me the better part of 3 hours, including time taken to to run out and sell off my inventory every time it filled up (usually had to do that twice).
With ICC gear and the higher damage output for bears since the patch, I figure it would take me about 2 hours now.
Guy Oct 25th 2010 4:19PM
How do you solo ZG? Don't you need to be in a raid?
Pwekl Oct 25th 2010 4:20PM
As a warlock, about two hours, moving at the speed of Anime.
Docseuzz Oct 25th 2010 4:22PM
Depends on the class, but your 'classic' soloers - pallies, bears, blood DKS, and hunters, can do the mount bosses + turtle boss in about 10-15 minutes (most time is clearing mobs around raptor boss due to fear). The whole place takes longer, I cleared it to get achievement in about 30-40 minutes, tops...

Prior to 4.0.1 I was doing full clears of ZG on my prot warrior in about 45min to an hour. That was including soloing Hakkar, which forced me to go out of my way to kill the Snake, Spider and Panter boss to get rid of his buffs.
I hit exhalted a few days before the patch dropped. I went in once since and now I have trouble even soloing the darn Raptor boss. /cry
Xeph Oct 25th 2010 4:28PM
For me on my ICC-geared feral druid, it takes maybe an hour to kill most bosses (have to leave Hakkar since I can't seem to solo him with his mind control forcing a reset) and a bit of the trash. When I go for an absolute full clear, it takes almost two hours. Mostly because trash have annoying abilities that force you to sit around waiting for it to wear off.

@Guy, soloing a raid instance just requires a few minutes of an accomplice's time. Get a friend to accept your party invitation, convert to raid, and then zone in. Once you've zoned in, your friend can leave the raid. Note that they must leave the party themselves -- if you kick them, you'll be teleported out of the instance.
Now, if you're going to be running in and out of the instance, you'll want to keep someone else in your raid group. A friend's little-played alt can be good for that. Have your friend log over, invite the alt to the party, convert to raid, and then have the friend log off. The offline raid member will still count and you won't be teleported out.

I can take out all three bosses (raptor/tiger/fishing) in under 20 min when I spec enhancement. Ask someone to join raid with you and go in. They don't need to stay in raid, as long as they voluntarily leave and you are raider leader. Just don't die.
I know a mage that solo's the tiger now.
Darwin Oct 26th 2010 8:11AM
@Guy
Another easy way to enter a raid solo is to do Wintergrasp. Once the fight is over, stay in the raid group -- you can now enter any raid instance you like. It's also helpful if you want the crafting patterns inside ICC.
Jorges Oct 25th 2010 6:03PM
An absolutely complete clear, that is, killing even the crocodiles (yes I'm insane like that sometimes) takes me 3 hours in my ICC geared Feral. I only go into bear when fighting Hakkar, the Tiger and the Raptor boss. Before 4.0.1, when I had 95% ArPen, It was a lot faster.
Spellotape Oct 25th 2010 6:05PM
I've soloed Thekal and his cadre as a shadow priest and multiple other bosses as a moonkin. Being able to heal yourself, clearing trash ahead of boss pulls, and simply avoiding pulling trash altogether while fighting a boss makes ZG doable (to a point) for some caster classes.
Jorges Oct 25th 2010 6:10PM
Btw, when pulling the axe throwers pull them one by one and kill them FAST. If you pull more than one and they start to spin, you're dead. They have the cheapest and more stupid stun in the game.
Xeph Oct 25th 2010 6:27PM
Definitely listen to Jorges. It sucks to getting stunned by multiple axe-throwers for over a minute. If you're in tank gear it's not so bad, but it hurts if you're a clothie. Kill them ASAP. If you can't do that, dot 'em up so they'll die if they start their spinning.
And similarly, don't pull a ton in the spider quarter. Lots of stuns and loss of control from those mobs, plus adds that come out. In the end it's faster to pull one group at a time than pull a bunch and be stuck sitting there because you can't control your character.

Well, for any hunters out there that want to make this a 10 minute ordeal: Go BM, you can run past most mobs, kill the 4 guards before the raptor boss. (This part is for any class: You don't need to clear mobs around the raptor boss!!!) What you do, kill the adept at the bottom, then as the boss is charging down, just run up the stairs and fight him at the top of his pedestal. Even when he fears you, you stop running before the bottom of the stairs and you never are forced to fall off. (Just be careful on reorientation after you're unfeared.) As BM, I pop BW to get of the fear and keep mend pet up 100% of the time. Also, with the changes to MD (if you glyph it), you can have 100% uptime on pet threat. Just a tank and spank with all of that in mind.
Cat boss hunter cheat: To avoid an annoyingly long boss fight, clear all the mobs to the immediate left and right of the tiger boss, then set your pet on passive. Make your pet stay at the door, MD to it, then run up and tag the tiger boss with a couple of shots. Once he's targeting your pet, FD. That will reset the adds, though they occasionally run a bit farther, so wait for the reset to pop out of FD. As soon as they're back, put pet on defensive and burn the boss down. Easy easy fights!
Hope this helps all you hunter-solo'ers out there that didn't know about these tricks!
Evelinda Oct 26th 2010 5:38AM
@xeph if you kill the panther boss, hakkar will no longer do the mind control... so you'll be able to solo him to your heart's content :)
Wonk Oct 25th 2010 4:19PM
Since the cooking spice vendor is bugged and you get an "Internal Bag Error" when trying to buy them, grabbing them up for when the server runs out might be profitable.
I have not seen a blue post yet concerning this bug or when it will be fixed, perhaps they have responded since last I looked... but for now, no new spice.

How do you access ZG since it's a raid? You have to have someone group first?
tatsumasa Oct 25th 2010 4:22PM
step 1) make a friend
step 2) log onto an alt
step 3) have friend invite alt to raid group
step 4) switch to main
step 5) have friend invite main to raid group
step 6) have friend make you ml and rl
step 7) kick friend
you are now in a raid group with your logged out alt
